Upon hearing Azik’s inquiry, the chief experintal officer, botanist Helr, explained:
"We have now selected several species for the grafting experints.
"The first is the Starlight Vine. The experint has been ongoing for over ten days, and the growth of the Starlight Vine is currently quite good."
As Helr answered, he led a few people to observe the cultivation room for the Starlight Vine grafted onto the Golden Tree.
Each Golden Tree cultivation room is independent.
Upon entering the cultivation room, Lu Heng saw a Golden Tree about half the height of a person, with a type of fluorescent vine wrapped around it.
According to Helr’s introduction, this vine is the Starlight Vine.
The glow of the Starlight Vine is not strong, with only a faint fluorescence on its leaves.
However, the Starlight Vine can produce a kind of fruit known as the Starlight Fruit, which Azik had ntioned before.
This fruit has a very high concentration of fluorescent substances.
Currently, this Starlight Vine has yet to bear fruit, so the fluorescent properties are not apparent.
Lu Heng moved in closer to observe and noticed a problem.
The Starlight Vine is growing well indeed, but the Golden Tree’s growth is not as good.
Moreover, this Golden Tree is only half the height of a person, clearly shorter than the Golden Trees in other cultivation rooms.
"This Golden Tree doesn’t seem to be growing well."
Helr nodded and replied, "Yes, its growth rate is very slow because the fluorescent substances are absorbed by the Starlight Vine."
Lu Heng noticed another issue.
Though it was supposed to be grafting, upon closer inspection, you would see that at the grafting point, the Starlight Vine had grown stalks that penetrated the bark of the Golden Tree.
"This doesn’t quite look like grafting."
Helr nodded and replied, "Yes, this experint is currently not very successful. Because the Starlight Vine itself is a parasitic vine, we originally thought the Starlight Vine’s life force was quite strong and wanted to try its effect."
Normally, grafting requires compatibility in taxonomy between the plants; not just any two plants can be grafted together.
Theoretically, the closer in taxonomy two plants are, the more likely the grafting will succeed.
However, this theory doesn’t hold true in the experint with the Golden Tree and the fluorescent plants.
Because the Golden Tree is a plant from the Elf World, while the fluorescent plants are from the Star Realm rchant Civilization.
Between plants from these two worlds, there’s not even the slightest connection, let alone similar taxonomy.
Therefore, the experint must proceed one type at a ti.
Since it’s an experint, there is no guarantee of complete success.
Based on the current situation, the "grafting" experint between the Starlight Vine and the Golden Tree is not heading as expected.
However, the experint is not entirely fruitless.
The grafting experint might have failed, but the parasitic experint succeeded.
The Starlight Vine successfully parasitized the Golden Tree and is growing pretty well.
If the Starlight Vine can maintain its fluorescent properties by parasitizing the Golden Tree, even in other worlds, then the experint is actually successful.
The term "parasitic" may sound derogatory.
But in nature, parasitism is a very normal survival strategy for plants.
In the native world of the Star Realm rchant Civilization, the Starlight Vine is originally a parasitic plant, usually found on the branches of other tall fluorescent plants.
There are also many similar parasitic vines on Blue Star.
In nature, there are instances where parasitic plants and their hosts coexist in a mutual dependency.
Therefore, if the experint of the Starlight Vine parasitizing the Golden Tree can maintain the fluorescent properties of the Starlight Vine, then this experint is deed successful.
Helr continued to explain: "This experint will proceed for a while and then be sent to environnts in other worlds for subsequent experints. Hopefully, we will receive good news."
After viewing the Starlight Vine’s cultivation room, they went to see the other cultivation rooms of the fluorescent plants for grafting.
This ti, the Star Realm rchants brought back thirty-six Golden Trees in total, and twenty-two of them have already undergone grafting experints, all with plants currently cultivated in the No.1 Ecological Ball.
Among them, seventeen grafting experints have already failed.
The failure reason is basically the sa; the grafted fluorescent plants could not absorb nutrients from the Golden Tree, leading to withered leaves.
This ans only five grafting experints are still ongoing, with one of them being the Starlight Vine.
After viewing all the cultivation rooms, Helr sighed: "The current experintal situation isn’t very optimistic, with most of the grafting not successful.
"It could be that the grafting thods and techniques are not mature enough, so we will continue to try, hoping to gain so achievents."
Lu Heng rembered Azik saying that there were originally over three thousand types of fluorescent plants.
But now, only about twenty species are growing in the Ecological Ball, with most fluorescent plant varieties gone.
However, for high-level civilizations, a lack of living plants doesn’t necessarily equate to ’extinction.’
"Apart from the current twenty or so fluorescent plant species, are there no other experintal samples?"
Helr answered, "Yes, there are. While there are only about twenty species of fluorescent plants surviving in the No.1 Ecological Ball, we have stored seeds and tissue samples for over a thousand types of fluorescent plants.
"We are considering which plants to cultivate for experintation, and the experintal team is discussing the types of plants to be developed."
