This kind of contest was a bit like sparring between martial artists.
Because if there was no deep hatred between them, when both sides struck with full force it was easy to lose control and injure or even kill soone.
So so martial artists invented sparring with "protective contact" for safety, using only their forearms to clash and test whose technique was superior.
The contest with Guan Tong now had the sa spirit.
When practitioners circulate Mind Power and make contact, whoever can use their Mind Power to interfere with or even disrupt the other’s natural circulation wins.
This kind of duel required no venue or schedule, it could happen right then and there.
"Co on, youngster!"
The man flashed his hand forward quickly, clearly angry.
He probably couldn’t accept that a middle-aged man ten or so years older than him was being looked down on by Guan Tong, who wasn’t yet twenty.
But Guan Tong only found it amusing.
The fact that the man doubted his age was proof of ignorance and arrogance.
Besides, it had been over a year since the Doomsday Rules arrived. Shouldn’t a teacher at the academy understand that in this era, the younger often had greater potential?
Items like Gene Optimization Fluid worked better the younger the recipient.
If soone knew that and still looked down on youth, it ant they were deliberately trying to intimidate.
All the more reason Guan Tong wouldn’t indulge him.
He extended his hand and clasped the other man’s palm.
The other man’s Mind Power surged through the palm imdiately, ferociously, as if he wanted to use that montum to throw Guan Tong’s Mind Power circulation into chaos in one go.
He had no idea that such an assault against Guan Tong was like using a single drop of water to batter the ocean.
Not long ago, because of official collaboration, Guan Tong had been receiving Mind Power inputs in the millions, tens of millions, even hundreds of millions every day.
No one in the world could match his experience handling, mobilizing, and digesting externally input Mind Power.
Now this paltry 100 points of Mind Power couldn’t disturb him, much less cause a fluctuation in the starting point of his circulation.
Sure enough, in the next mont the man’s expression changed.
He felt the link for the hundred points of Mind Power he had pushed suddenly cut off, gone without a trace.
It was like two armies clashing only to find that, at the start of battle, one commander’s soldiers had disappeared—what kind of fight was that?
The man hadn’t even begun his attack properly before he’d already lost.
The huge gap left him montarily stunned, almost frozen.
Those in the conference room couldn’t see the details of the duel, since this kind of contest took place inside the body and it was hard for outsiders to tell who held the advantage.
But they could catch hints from the two n’s expressions.
Zhang Linliang, who faced Guan Tong, now looked dazed and expressionless, clearly at a disadvantage.
Guan Tong’s face remained calm with a trace of coldness, not much different from before, as if he held the upper hand.
A few people muttered quietly, "Guan Tong has the upper hand?"
"Looks like Linliang miscalculated."
"Seems this youngster really has skill. No wonder Lecturer Shi Jingyi recomnded him…"
The conversation wasn’t loud, but it wasn’t hushed either. Both Guan Tong and Zhang Linliang could hear it.
Zhang Linliang had planned to withdraw his hand and concede, but hearing their words stung his pride, and he imdiately forced more Mind Power into the clash.
Guan Tong felt it at once.
He had endured so many sessions of Mind Power input that his judgnt of exact Mind Power "values" was extrely precise.
Zhang Linliang had indeed only used 100 points before, but now he pushed beyond that limit—cheating.
Guan Tong had only cut off Zhang Linliang’s connection to that hundred points, without launching an offensive. But since the other had cheated, he needed to teach him a lesson.
He promptly sent his Mind Power into Zhang Linliang’s body. In terms of manipulating Mind Power, dealing with Zhang Linliang was like an adult beating up a small child.
Ever since he first acquired Shadow, he had been practicing these skills. Every summoning and control of the Shadow refined his Mind Power manipulation.
The mont he initiated the attack, the sparring ended.
Zhang Linliang felt his Mind Power circulation lose control instantly. The abruptness caused violent vertigo in his brain, and his body went limp, falling backward uncontrollably.
"Lecturer Zhang?"
"Help him up!"
The other lecturers rushed to steady him. Guan Tong withdrew his hand and sat back down.
"Linliang, are you all right?"
It took Zhang Linliang more than ten seconds to regain his wits. When he realized what had happened, he looked at Guan Tong with a complicated expression.
"I admit I lost. Your Mind Power manipulation far exceeds mine."
Guan Tong nodded and looked to Dean Zhou Qinfeng. "Dean Zhou, can I start as a substitute lecturer now?"
"No problem, no problem." Zhou Qinfeng said, motioning for Guan Tong to leave first. Later they would arrange contacts to process academy registration, assign a lecturer dormitory, and so on.
After Guan Tong left, the others hurriedly asked about Zhang Linliang’s condition.
Zhang Linliang awkwardly shook his head. "He's really powerful. I’m nowhere near him, that’s the truth."
Another lecturer said, "If you say so, Linliang, then this kid does have talent. Just his personality looks rather arrogant."
"Yeah. He didn’t sound very respectful when speaking to the dean earlier—probably a conceited youth."
Zhou Qinfeng smiled unconcernedly. "He’s here to substitute teach, why should he respect ? As long as he can teach students well, that’s enough."
"Dean, has Guan Tong’s background check been done?"
"Not yet, but Lecturer Shi Jingyi told
that Guan Tong and she are from the sa hotown, both from Yunhua, so it should be fine."
"Still, better to investigate. After all, he'll be in contact with students."
"True. I’ll contact the officials later."
The academy finished Guan Tong’s background check in half a day because there really wasn’t much to find.
Records showed Guan Tong had been an ordinary high school student in Yunhua City before the Doomsday Rules arrived.
After the rules took effect, there was little information on him. The only record noted was his tangential involvent in a large kidnapping case targeting Ascendants, but he was nearly a victim himself, so that raised no issues.
Two days later, on the 12th, the academy officially issued Guan Tong a written docunt appointing him as a substitute lecturer.
His appointnt was for six months, because Lecturer Shi Jingyi would return within no more than half a year at the latest.
Whether he would later stay on as an assistant and remain at the academy was uncertain, so they hired him for six months first and would decide again when the term expired.
Although he was a substitute, his treatnt matched that of a full lecturer.
Board and lodging were basic, he received a fixed monthly wage in Ascension Coins, he’d get official support promptly during rule changes, and he could apply to the officials for so item use under his lecturer status if needed.
Those were the explicit benefits; there were many hidden perks too. Being an academy lecturer made many bigwigs want to save face for you, and after new rules were released you could be among the first to receive certain classified intelligence.
Guan Tong didn’t care about those things. He beca a substitute lecturer only to repay Shi Jingyi’s favor, not for special treatnt.
On June 15th he officially moved into the academy lecturer dormitory and began a brand-new life.
