They got back in the car and hit the road again, not going too far this ti, just to the Japanese restaurant they used to frequent.

It was close to ho, the atmosphere was quiet, eting all of Jane McCain’s requirents.

The two sat facing each other, neither speaking first.

Jane was wondering if suddenly bringing up his first love would be offensive? Although she really minded that Allen Rivera still thought of another woman, bringing it up herself felt inexplicably hard to do.

Allen Rivera was thinking about how to make Jane give up the idea of breaking up. Last ti she ntioned being too busy with work, the difference in their social circles, and the age gap... These reasons were really critical, making it impossible for him to ignore them.

Luckily, the atmosphere today was nice, like two people about to draw swords who had instead put down their weapons and entered a peaceful negotiation mode.

Allen rembered a joke shared by a colleague—

Question: What’s the difference between an angry girlfriend and a terrorist?

Answer: You can negotiate with a terrorist.

So, the docility Jane was showing now, did it an she was not as angry anymore?

Sigh...

Allen sighed silently in his heart.

He had never pursued a woman before, nor deliberately tried to appease one. These recent matters made him constantly feel sowhat powerless.

Could it be true, as she said, that he was too old, the generation gap too wide, making it impossible to understand the thoughts of these young girls nowadays?

They ate silently, topics scattered, and never really got on track.

Near the end, Jane’s mom made an international call, asking if Jane was at the company and to take a picture of a design draft and send it over.

Ruby Spencer needed it urgently, so Jane had to return to the company.

Allen drove her back and asked, "Are there others still at the company?"

Jane explained, "There should be soone working overti, but the design draft is locked in my mom’s office safe, only she and I can open it in the entire company."

If not, Jane could easily instruct her assistant to handle this errand.

Sotis, when it rains, it pours. When they arrived downstairs at the company, the entire building was pitch black, only the ergency lights were on in the lobby, and it was crowded with people.

Jane asked the security guard and found out the cable had a fault and was undergoing ergency repair.

There was an anxious rushing voice in the crowd: "When will it be fixed?"

The managent’s response was very official: "Our maintenance staff is making all-out repairs and the power system will definitely be restored as soon as possible..."

As for how soon "as soon as possible" actually ant, no one knew.

"What to do, my mom’s in a hurry to get it." Jane was so anxious she was going in circles.

Allen said, "Let’s take the stairs up."

Jane widened her eyes and looked at him, "The company is on the 20th floor!"

"It’s not that high; you can think of it as four five-story buildings. An average person takes about 3 minutes to climb five floors, so four of those would be 12 minutes, plus resting along the way, 20 minutes should be enough."

Allen said, glancing at the elevator direction, and continued, "Moreover, cable faults generally have two scenarios: one that can be fixed quickly, and the other taking at least several hours to fix."

After hearing his words, Jane felt nothing but despair.

She looked down at her high heels, closed her eyes, "Fine, let’s take the stairs up."

...

When they went to the stairwell and were about to head upstairs, Jane leaned against the wall and silently took off her shoes.

Allen imdiately understood what she ant, raising his eyebrow disapprovingly, "If you take off your shoes, you’ll only have socks, and it’s very dark here. Stepping on broken glass shards or other hard objects could easily hurt you."

Jane said dejectedly, "But there’s no other way, I can’t possibly go upstairs in high stiletto shoes."

Allen was silent for a mont, took off his coat, draped it over his arm, walked in front of Jane, and crouched down, "I’ll carry you up."

Jane: "..."
