Upon hearing Evelyn Clayton’s unchanged voice, Pauline Warren seed to finally breathe a sigh of relief.
"No worries, no worries, it’s just that Shane ntioned you haven’t been feeling well lately. I asked Yara before, and she said the sa thing." Pauline Warren was deeply concerned, "Are you okay, Evelyn?"
"Everything’s fine." Evelyn Clayton tightened her grip on the phone, "Maybe it’s just so old injuries haven’t healed yet, and it recently snowed in Riversend, which is terribly damp and cold, so I haven’t been in good spirits, but it’s nothing serious."
Even so, Pauline Warren remained quite worried, "And your stomach—"
Noticing what Pauline Warren was about to say, Evelyn Clayton’s heart thumped twice. She forcibly interrupted Pauline, casually changing the subject, "By the way, if you need to contact , just call directly. If I don’t answer, it’s probably because I’m busy, so just leave a ssage. Yara isn’t with every day, so there’s no need to trouble her."
Pauline Warren felt sothing was off but didn’t think much of it, only saying, "Alright, then I’ll ssage you later, just make sure to reply to as soon as possible! By the way, Shane said if things get too busy on your end, he could send over two assistants and also find a caregiver to look after you. What do you think?"
Ripples ford in Evelyn Clayton’s eyes, her fingers twisted slightly.
"No need." Evelyn Clayton forced a slight smile, her voice still normal, "I can take care of myself, and besides, there’s an assistant here, so don’t worry."
Pauline Warren acknowledged, sounding sowhat hesitant and regretful, but ultimately respected Evelyn’s wishes.
"Alright... make sure to take good care of yourself. Call when you have ti. I miss you a lot but don’t want to disturb you."
Pauline’s words were intimately natural, with an inexplicable sense of trying to please.
In all her life, even from Charlotte Sterling, Evelyn had never received such warmth.
Her heart inevitably softened, her voice too llowed, softly saying, "Okay, don’t worry, I’ll call you as soon as I have ti."
After finishing the call with Pauline Warren, Evelyn Clayton curled up in a corner of the sofa, gazing blankly out at the sky.
She couldn’t recall when it happened, but Jas Grant, with whom she’d been close both physically and emotionally for many years, couldn’t even reassure her more than Pauline did.
Soon after, the door to the room was gently knocked.
Evelyn Clayton didn’t shift her gaze, only responded lightly, "Co in."
Owen Sherman gently pushed the door, standing at the entrance, looking over at Evelyn from afar.
He instinctively held his breath, looking at Evelyn’s profile, and spoke with utmost care, "Miss Clayton, are you free now? I’m here to do today’s routine checkup for you."
Evelyn Clayton turned to glance at him, lowered her gaze, and replied faintly, "Alright."
Owen Sherman entered with the blood pressure monitor and other equipnt, half-kneeling in front of Evelyn as he began to asure her blood pressure.
After finishing, Owen spoke gently.
"Your blood pressure is a bit low."
He cautiously glanced at Evelyn, "Are you feeling alright today?"
Evelyn lowered her gaze as he pricked her fingertip for a blood sugar test, the burning, stabbing pain causing her to frown slightly.
But her voice remained unchanged, "I’ve never had a bad mood."
Owen’s expression froze.
He couldn’t help but glance at Evelyn again.
This doesn’t resemble soone who’s never in a bad mood...
Evelyn noticed his gaze, and she laughed softly, ambiguous.
"What, think I’m lying?"
