The ringtone suddenly sounded in the dark night, and Evelyn Clayton lowered her gaze to look. The phone number displayed made her eyes light up.

She hurriedly answered the call, her tone tinged with urgency, "Officer Owens!"

It was Phillip Owens calling.

Phillip’s voice was slightly deep, with a hint of hoarseness, "Miss Clayton, sorry it took so long to get back to you."

"It’s okay, Officer Owens!" Evelyn couldn’t wait, "How is the matter of Lars Alden’s family being transferred to the hospital?"

Unlike previous calls, Phillip’s tone this ti was finally a bit relaxed.

"If nothing goes wrong, she can be transferred to your city hospital tomorrow. I’ve arranged for a caregiver to look after her, rest assured, it’s soone trustworthy. You can visit her at the city hospital at 8 a.m. tomorrow, soone will contact you then."

Evelyn was imnsely grateful, taking a deep breath, she said, "Officer Owens, thank you for everything... This transfer must have consud much of your energy and resources. I can’t thank you in person right now; please send the total expenses, and let cover the cost."

There was a mont of silence on the other end, then Phillip sighed, "Miss Clayton, there’s no need. If I needed you to cover the expenses, I would have stated so from the beginning. But I’m not doing this for money... It’s just, as a policeman, there are certain truths I want to uncover. I also hope you can find the person who killed your father and settle this long-cherished wish."

Upon hearing this, Evelyn’s nose stung with emotion.

She held back her tears, and after a long while, managed to suppress her sobs, saying softly, "Alright, thank you, Officer Owens, really, thank you so much."

"You’re welco." Phillip’s voice was much softer, as if comforting Evelyn, "I hope you can persevere and wait for the day when the truth is revealed."

After hanging up, Evelyn was sobbing silently in the dark.

Yet her eyes were shining brighter than ever.

As if she was already seeing the dawn of hope.

The next morning.

Evelyn drove to the city hospital. After parking her car nearby, she began to wait.

During this ti, she sent a ssage to Gene Young, explaining the general situation and then patiently waited.

Soon after, a young man in plain clothes but with an uncommon deanor approached her.

The man’s goal was clear, and his eyes held a firmness and composure uncommon in ordinary people. Upon reaching Evelyn, he asked in a deep voice, "Excuse , are you Evelyn Clayton?"

"Yes, I am." Evelyn maintained caution, "And you are?"

"Hello, I’m Elias Sherman, a disciple of Officer Owens." The man extended his hand to Evelyn, "You can call Elias."

Evelyn felt a bit relieved, her tone courteous, "Hello, Officer Elias. Are you working at the Y Province police departnt?"

Elias’s distinct features showed so helpless bitterness, "No need to call officer; I’m no longer a policeman."

Evelyn was slightly surprised, "What?"

"Two months ago, I was suspended, and I haven’t been reinstated since. I don’t think I’ll be going back to my post in the future either." Elias pursed his lips, seemingly reluctant to discuss this further. "Lily Warren is settled, Miss Clayton, please follow inside now."

Seeing that Elias did not wish to say more, Evelyn politely refrained from asking further and followed him into the inpatient departnt.

"Lily Warren is Lars Alden’s wife; she’s now in a regular single-person ward. She has chronic myeloid leukemia, and her ntal state has worsened since learning her husband was arrested and imprisoned."
