Evelyn Clayton’s eyes were filled with a deep chill.
Yara Reagan couldn’t help but curse under her breath, blurting out, "Those two are still alive?!"
Iris Lockwood couldn’t hold back her tears, letting a few fall down before harshly wiping them away with the back of her hand.
She gritted her teeth, "I always knew, always knew that Philip Lockwood didn’t care about , but I never thought he’d be so heartless! That Matthew Sullivan has a criminal record! Yet now he’ll agree to anything for money!"
"I fear Charlotte Sterling is also fanning the flas behind this." Evelyn ntioned her biological mother again, but only with indifference, "Don’t be afraid, move in with for now, and I’ll find ti to et them."
Iris bit her lip, then shook her head fiercely.
"No, I’m not here to ask you to help , nor to force you to stand up for . I’m just feeling sad and wanted soone to talk to. You’re at an upward phase in your career, don’t get entangled with them for my sake."
Thinking back to the past, Iris always felt guilty towards Evelyn.
But with her personality, she couldn’t bring herself to humbly apologize.
So Iris thought, she’d do whatever she could to help Evelyn, do more for her, and feel closer to her.
How laughable it is that, although Evelyn used to be the one she hated most, now she can only feel the pure emotions of family from Evelyn.
"Iris, don’t worry." Evelyn wrapped her arm around her shoulder, her voice hoarse, "I’ve said before, the past is the past. I know you’re not saying this to ask to stand up for you, but it’s sothing I want to do, you understand?"
Besides, Evelyn knew Philip Lockwood and Charlotte Sterling would sooner or later co looking for her.
Although she didn’t know how they’d remained calm and quiet for so long, given their nature which is hard to change.
Iris’s face showed hesitation.
"Alright, don’t think too much, leave it to Evelyn and , you just rest well!" Yara stepped forward and patted her shoulder, "We’re both bosses now, rest assured!"
Iris’s eyes were filled with tears, and after a while, she couldn’t hold back and burst into tears.
Evelyn and Yara were slightly startled but soon sighed gently, understanding in their hearts.
Unlike Evelyn, Iris had been dependent on Philip Lockwood and Charlotte Sterling, raised under the illusionary care of a father and mother, with simple thoughts, clear love and hate.
Her expectations of Philip Lockwood were too high, and even for Charlotte Sterling, her stepmother, she had a subconscious reliance. It’s hard for her to erge unscathed from this illusion now.
"I don’t understand, why did they seem to care for so much before." Iris sobbed, "Why now they’re both forcing ..."
Evelyn remained silent, gently caressing her back, comforting her.
But Yara couldn’t hold it in.
"Because in the past, Evelyn was there to shield you, she took on many humiliations for you, did many things to let you be carefree. Now that those two can’t leech off her, they can only co after you."
Iris’s pupils shook slightly.
When she looked at Evelyn again, she couldn’t hide her guilt anymore.
She sobbed, her voice hoarse, "I’m sorry, I... I’m sorry."
"Don’t say that." Evelyn touched her hair, "It’s all in the past, I’ve let it go."
Iris bit her lip, tears soaking her collar, she leaned forward slightly, cautiously seeking a hug from Evelyn.
"I’m so stupid, really stupid, to have believed them like that before." Iris seed to mutter to herself, yet a confession to Evelyn, "You know what? Actually, it was Harrison Grant who found Philip Lockwood, telling to marry Matthew Sullivan. He said that if I marry him, they would get thirty million, and he would acquire Philip Lockwood’s company..."
Her voice grew increasingly frightened, "I don’t know the rest, but Harrison Grant must have made other deals with them."
