Back in the day, her relatives were heartless enough to deal with a single mom; they were blind to their own brother’s death, wholly fixated on the money he left behind. Jessie nodded vigorously, agreeing with Kevin’s reasoning.
Since they gave in once back then, those relatives dared to harass Laura and pressure her for money. As the saying goes, "Once bitten, twice shy." She wouldn’t let them succeed a third ti.
If they dared to do anything, she wouldn’t hesitate to expose everything from the past and see if they had any sha left.
The two of them tidied up and went downstairs, where the bodyguards tensed up seeing Kevin and Jessie descending together without them knowing in advance.
Drake wore a pained expression and quickly scurried away.
What a wonderful young master he had, completely disregarding that he was still here!
Watching Drake leave, Jessie was taken aback. "That person looked familiar just now."
"Your eyes must be fooling you," Kevin replied with a nonchalant expression.
She nodded. "I guess so. Should I get a pair of glasses?"
Otherwise, how could she have confused him with the shopkeeper who once delivered Kevin ho?
"No need, your eyesight is fine."
He maintained an untroubled deanor and drove the pickup truck to take her to the shop.
On the way there, Jessie called Laura and explained what had happened today, reminding Laura not to answer any calls.
Back then, Laura had paid them to avoid trouble for fear it would affect Jessie’s school life. Now that Jessie had grown up, let them co to the shop if they dared.
Although she had not contacted them in years, she knew those cousins were living far more comfortably than they ever were.
Hearing this, Laura was furious.
"They think we’re easy to bully, huh? I won’t give them a di! If they dare to co, I’ll fight with all my might not to let them get their way!"
"Don’t worry, Mom. I’ve already blocked them. Just take care of Luke."
Laura responded and felt reassured. She still held the contract from back then and wouldn’t tolerate anyone disrupting Jessie’s life now.
She felt confident that even if sothing happened, Kevin would stand by Jessie.
After a brief chat, Jessie hung up the call. Kevin dropped her off at the shop.
"Mr. Harper, drive safely." She waved before turning to unlock the store.
He nodded from the car and drove away. Focused on unlocking the door, she failed to notice a Maybach quietly passing by.
As she opened the shop door, she heard Lilian’s voice calling from behind.
"Jessie!"
Turning around, Jessie saw Lilian running toward her.
"Lilian, why are you here so early today?"
Lilian smiled, glancing at the nearby Maybach and marveling, "Jessie, is that your husband’s car? Didn’t expect him to be so wealthy."
Jessie followed her gaze and explained, shaking her head. "How could it be? My husband drives a pickup. However, that car’s license plate does look familiar."
She frowned, feeling like that car had been around here more than once. Before she could think it over, Lilian patted her shoulder and brought her back to reality.
"By the way, Jessie, can I borrow your bike? Without money to buy a car, I can only pedal around."
Lilian looked around but didn’t see Jessie’s bike.
"I t so troublemakers behind the Quiet River Community last ti, and the bike chain fell off. I haven’t had ti to fix it."
Hearing this, Lilian’s eyes widened in disbelief. "What? You encountered troublemakers? Are you alright? Hurt anywhere?"
"I’m fine." Jessie waved her hand. “Luckily, your boss helped out last ti. I’m planning on thanking him over dinner. You need to co; otherwise, I’d feel awkward."
At the Quiet River Community? Steve?
Why was Steve there at night?
"Sure, just let know when. You’re treating, so of course I will co." Lilian chuckled, raising her eyebrows.
Now that Jessie was married, it would be inappropriate for her to dine privately with Steve. Since Lilian saw them both as good friends, she didn’t mind coming along.
Though she felt Steve wouldn’t make a fuss over such things, Jessie disliked owing favors and would only feel peace after settling them.
anwhile, Kevin got out of his pickup and entered the Maybach. Drake was in the passenger seat, helplessly glancing back at him.
"Young Master, could you please give us a heads-up next ti? With all these surprises, what if things go wrong?"
Kevin glanced at him coolly, prompting Drake to clam up instantly.
"Phone."
Drake handed him his personal cell phone. Finding a na, he dialed the number.
The person on the other end soon picked up. "Well, what brings President Harper to call ? I thought you weren’t coming today."
Adam Lambert, his college classmate and good friend, had been personally recruited to Harper Industries by Kevin for his capabilities. Adam rose to his current position through his abilities, earning Kevin’s trust.
"Cut the crap. I need you to check sothing for ."
"What is it?" Adam’s tone turned serious.
"I recently got a wife, rember?"
Adam couldn’t help but tease, "So, you’ve fallen for her? What, are you excited for to find out her likes and dislikes for you? You could have just told sooner; I have a whole guide on wooing. Want to borrow it?"
Kevin’s face darkened as he replied, "I’m not looking to woo her; I want you to investigate her family background."
Despite all Jessie revealed today, it was only part of the story. To help her effectively, he needed the full picture.
After upsetting her once, he learned not to rely on isolated conversations.
He didn’t trust Adam just from his capabilities; the Lambert family’s own vast information network could uncover nearly anything.
Few knew of this, and without his father’s high regard for Kevin, Adam wouldn’t have been permitted to work under him.
"You’re troubling over such a trivial thing? Why don’t you ask her directly?"
