Her father’s voice was heavy with age and hardship, so faint it seed a single straw could muffle it.
Just those two words made Nia Mitchell feel like crying.
"Mhm," she answered gruffly.
She’d initially thought her stepmother was tricking her over the phone, just trying to get her to send so money. After all, this wasn’t the first ti sothing like this had happened. But this ti, even her father was on the line, which ant... it was true.
"Can... can you co back ho?"
Her father didn’t directly ask for money. He couldn’t bring himself to ask that outright.
"I can," Nia Mitchell replied, nodding continuously as tears welled in her eyes.
After hanging up, Nia Mitchell wiped her tears, quickly returned to her Office Room, picked up her bag, and left.
This news had completely shattered her. She rushed to the Train Station, bought the first available ticket, and left Capital Town.

Sitting on the train, Nia Mitchell’s face was pale. She had thought she would never return, not in this lifeti. Her mind was filled with scenes from the past. She rembered how she had left ho with her luggage, never looking back, a clear sign of her determination.

The phone rang again. It was her father.
"Are you back yet?"
Her father’s voice cracked, as if he couldn’t withstand another blow.
"I’m on the train. How’s my little brother?"
"He’s still in the operating room. The Doctor said he hit his head and needs brain surgery."
Those grave words had completely stunned her father.
"So... are they doing it now?"
Nia Mitchell, still young and inexperienced with such crises, felt a surge of fear and was at a loss for words.
"Not yet. He’s currently being resuscitated, but they need to raise money for the surgery."

"I’m his sister, after all! With sothing this serious happening to my little brother, of course I have to co back, don’t I?"
Nia Mitchell was also getting angry. What kind of nonsense was this? They wanted her to send money, but not return? Then her stepmother would surely tell everyone what an ungrateful wretch of a sister she was. That her brother was in such a terrible state, and she didn’t even co back or contribute a single cent? Her stepmother was absolutely capable of doing such a thing.
"You talk so nicely now! Why didn’t you say a word when you left back then?"
Her stepmother imdiately retorted. Her overbearing voice didn’t sound at all like soone in a Hospital.
Hearing this, Nia Mitchell said nothing more and simply hung up.
How could anyone respect a stepmother like that?
