All signals were interrupted, and even satellite phones had spotty reception at the base of the mountain.
As they reached the summit, the signal significantly strengthened.
Jiang Ye dialed a number as soon as he could.
The call connected after the second ring:
"Xiao Jiang?"
The na was correctly identified.
Jiang Ye instinctively straightened up:
"Leader, it’s ."
"Hmm, have you arrived?"
"Not yet, we’re currently at the summit. All the roads are completely destroyed.
The village on top of the mountain has suffered particularly severe damage; several houses have been buried in the landslide. We’re in the middle of an ergency rescue."
The senior leader on the phone paused for a few seconds upon hearing Jiang Ye’s report.
When he spoke again, his voice had aged a bit:
"Alright, focus on the rescue first."
"Yes, Leader!"
"Hmm, once the other rescue troops arrive, you continue on. It’s imperative that you successfully bring those professors out.
Alive, we want to see them.
Dead, we need to recover their bodies.
Understood?"
With the conversation reaching this point, the gravity of the situation was clear.
Jiang Ye had no room for dissent:
"Understood!"
The call ended, and two team mbers who were nearby had been listening the whole ti.
Now, overtaken by curiosity, they couldn’t help themselves:
"Captain Jiang, what mission is this?"

So, everyone was earnest and diligent, not allowing complacency.

Relief washed over everyone as it turned out the victim hadn’t suffered any serious injuries.
On the other side, in front of a collapsed house, sat an old man in his seventies or eighties, staring steadfastly at the house, his arms and legs bleeding from wounds which he ignored.
Upon seeing this, Jiang Ye frowned and then walked over.
"Sir, let wrap up your wounds for you."
The old man shook his head:
"No need." He refused.
Hmm???
On closer inspection, one could see that the old man had no will to live.
Jiang Ye paused, puzzled:
"Sir, if there’s anything you need help with, just let know."
The old man finally shifted his gaze to Jiang Ye:
"My whole life, I’ve had neither son nor daughter, and I’ve lived a lifeti with my partner. Now that my partner is gone, I don’t want to live either.
Young man, go see to the others in the village."
Yeesh!
At that mont, a middle-aged man holding his head ran over:
"Second Uncle, why are you still here? Didn’t we say to gather at the open field? These places are too dangerous now; an aftershock could happen at any mont."
The middle-aged man seed to be injured, constantly pressing a handkerchief to his head; the blood had soaked through, running down his cheek.
