That choosing did not accumulate into a doctrine.
It did not produce a lineage of correct decisions that could be traced, audited, or defended. No graph ever showed a steady improvent. No generation could point to the last and say, they figured it out.
What it produced instead were interruptions.
Small breaks in otherwise predictable arcs. Lives that bent slightly away from what had seed inevitable—not enough to look heroic in retrospect, but enough to alter who bore the cost of the next mont.

but as a faint, persistent difficulty in believing that one had never had a choice.
The world did not beco wise.
It did not beco just.
It did not beco careful enough to be safe.
But it beca, in places and monts that could not be charted,
slightly less convincing
when it tried to say
there was no other way.
That difficulty did not announce itself as doubt.
