Chapter 97: Deafening
She caught each husband’s eye in turn, her fingers brushing Victor’s wrist in the silent signal they’d developed for when she needed them alone. "Could we have a mont?" she asked softly, the question carrying weight beyond its simple words.
Voss’s amber eyes locked onto hers. There was no teasing in them. No restraint softened by distance.
"When you let
lift you," he said, "I feel like I’ve won sothing."
Her breath caught.
"Like I get to be the one between you and everything that wants to take," he continued.
Her heart fluttered hard enough she was sure they could hear it.
Damien’s fingers brushed lightly against her shoulder, slow and deliberate, not possessive in movent but in intention. "You are not a burden. You are the only thing worth burdening ourselves for."
The intensity in his tone sent heat down her spine.
Ivan’s silver gaze held her steady. "You being in my arms makes
calr."
Victor did not look away from her. "You trusting
enough to rest makes
ruthless."
Her stomach flipped.
"You think we want you strong and independent all the ti," Victor continued. "We don’t."
Her ears flattened slightly.
"We want you soft with us," Damien said.
"We want you to lean," Ivan added.
Voss’s voice dropped to sothing almost dangerous. "We want you to choose us when you’re tired."
The space felt smaller suddenly, charged.
Felicity’s breath grew uneven. "You sound obsessed."
Damien did not hesitate. "We are."
Ivan’s answer was imdiate. "Yes."
Victor’s red eyes glead faintly. "Completely."
Voss did not blink. "I don’t want to share your weight with the ground."
The possessiveness was not loud. It was steady. Deep-rooted. Husband.
Her heart thudded painfully against her ribs. "You don’t have to protect
from everything," she whispered.
Victor leaned closer. "We know."
Damien’s thumb traced absent circles near her collarbone, not wandering, just present. "We want to."
Ivan’s massive hand curled lightly around her ankle, warm and grounding. "It makes us feel alive."
Voss’s tail brushed faintly against her hip. "It makes
feel chosen."
That did it.
Her breath shuddered.
She had never realized that every ti she let them lift her, she was giving them sothing back. Not weakness. Trust. Control surrendered willingly.
Felicity lowered herself back onto the rooftop instead of grass, braid fanning out behind her against cold concrete. The wind tugged at loose strands. The lantern light of her space dimd slightly overhead, golden but fading at the edges.
"You’re all terrifying," she murmured faintly.
Damien’s lips curved. "Only for you."
Victor’s gaze did not soften. "And because of you."
Ivan’s grip tightened just slightly before easing. "Let us carry you."
Voss’s voice was the last thing she heard before the warmth thinned.
"Let us want you like this."
Her heart fluttered so violently she had to close her eyes.
When she opened them, the world had narrowed.
The lantern glow was gone.
Concrete. Wind. The sll of rust.
They had not moved away.
They had moved closer.
Victor was the first thing she saw. Silver hair falling forward slightly, red eyes dark and focused, wings rising behind him like instinct given form. His hand braced beside her shoulder, not touching her, but close enough that she felt enclosed without being trapped.
Ivan was on her other side, broad and warm. One large hand still circled her ankle, thumb brushing faintly like he had forgotten he was doing it.
Damien hovered near her head, onyx gaze half-lidded, studying her expression as if morizing the mont she woke.
And Voss.
Voss leaned closer, forearm pressed into the rooftop near her waist, wolf ears angled forward, amber eyes unblinking. His breath brushed her cheek.
For a heartbeat, none of them spoke.
Her pulse jumped hard.
"You’re staring," she whispered, softer than intended.
Victor’s mouth curved faintly. "You were staring first."
Ivan’s voice rumbled. "We were waiting."
"For what."
Damien’s thumb traced the edge of her braid. "For you."
Victor leaned in first, slow, deliberate, giving her every second to pull away.
She did not.
Ivan’s breath ghosted over her jaw.
Damien’s voice hovered at her temple. "Say stop if you want space."
Her fingers curled against concrete.
Voss’s gaze dropped to her mouth.
"I don’t," she whispered.
That was all it took.
Snow Team had ford their usual loose periter the mont Felicity and her husbands stepped fully out of her space. Not clustered. Not distracted. Watching the skyline, watching stairwell access, watching each other.
Sam sat near the edge of the rooftop with one knee raised. Kai leaned against a ventilation unit ten steps to his right. Pope stood closer to the seam of her space. Draco paced near the access door. Sarge stood like a monunt near the far side.
Everyone was clear now.
Her husbands were hers.
Snow Team were her friends.
Her team.
Not owned. Not claid that way.
She had said it plainly. They were her best friends. Her unit. Her people. That line had been drawn.
It did not make the air lighter.
Emma saw Sam.
She did not see the periter tighten.
She approached slowly, boots scraping faintly against the concrete.
Kai’s attention shifted imdiately. Pope’s head angled slightly. Draco stopped pacing.
No one moved yet.
"You’re always out here," Emma said.
Sam did not turn.
She stepped closer.
Kai straightened.
"She doesn’t look at you the way she looks at them," Emma continued, lowering her voice. "You’re just here."
Sam finally looked at her.
"Back up," he said evenly.
Emma smiled faintly and took another step instead.
Kai pushed off the ventilation unit and moved three paces closer to Sam without breaking eye contact with her.
Pope shifted position to close distance from the other side. Draco’s posture tightened.
Emma stepped directly into Sam’s space and lifted her hand, brushing her fingers along the side of his neck.
Kai was beside him instantly.
Sam caught her wrist.
"I said back up."
She leaned closer. "You don’t have to pretend. I could be there for you. She won’t."
The air snapped.
A compressed blast of sound detonated between them, sharp and focused.
Emma scread.
The scream cut off halfway as she stumbled backward and hit the rooftop. Her hands flew to her ears. Blood spilled between her fingers almost imdiately.
Snow Team moved without hesitation.
Kai stepped directly in front of Sam, blocking him from view.
Pope pivoted outward, scanning the rooftop automatically for external threats.
Draco reached Emma first but did not kneel. He assessed.
Sarge crossed the rooftop in two heavy strides and stepped directly in front of Felicity as she ca out of the seam of her space without looking back for approval.
He did not check her face.
He did not ask if she was frightened.
He simply placed himself there.
Solid. Unmovable.
Felicity’s heart slamd harder.
Josh lunged for Sam.
Sarge intercepted him effortlessly, grabbing him by the front of his jacket and slamming him down onto the rooftop with enough force to knock the air from his lungs.
The concrete echoed.
Robert twisted free for half a second and grabbed a loose timber near a vent.
Draco kicked it away before it could rise.
Pope swept Robert’s legs and drove him face-first onto the rooftop. Kai locked his arms behind his back imdiately.
"You’re not touching him," Draco said coldly.
Emma rocked on the ground, blood streaking down her jaw, eyes wide and unfocused.
"I can’t hear."
Sam stood rigid, breath shallow.
"I told her to stop."
The air around him vibrated faintly again. Not outward. Contained.
Kai felt it and did not flinch.
"Control it," Kai said quietly.
Sam inhaled slowly.
The vibration lessened.
Josh tried to rise again.
Sarge pressed him down with one hand and held him there.
Within seconds, Robert and Josh were bound with rope pulled from their own packs. Pope tied tight, efficient knots. Kai double-checked them.
Robert thrashed uselessly. "He attacked her."
"She touched him after he told her not to," Pope replied flatly.
Emma tried to speak again but her voice ca out warped and distant.
Sam looked at his hands.
"I didn’t know I could do that."
A hairline crack split the brittle concrete near his boot as the air trembled once more.
Draco looked at the fracture, then back at Sam. "You do now."
The seam of Felicity’s space shimred faintly behind them, warm and untouched.
Emma knelt in blood, ears ringing into silence.
Robert and Josh lay bound and furious.
Sam stood at the center, the air humming around him like sothing newly awakened.
Snow Team stood with him.
Guarding their own.
Sarge did not move away from Felicity.
She realized she was standing closer to him than usual.
Close enough that her shoulder nearly brushed his back.
No one comnted.
Her heart was still racing.
Not just from the blast.
From the way he had stepped in front of her without hesitation.
From the way he had not looked back for permission.
Victor’s wing shifted subtly.
Voss’s jaw tightened.
Damien’s eyes narrowed.
Ivan’s hand slid around her waist, grounding.
But none of them corrected it.
None of them claid it.
Snow Team were her friends.
Her team.
Her best friends.
That was the narrative.
The wind scraped across the rooftop.
Sarge finally turned his head slightly. Just enough to check her in his peripheral vision.
"You steady," he asked, blunt.
"Yes," she said.
Her pulse betrayed her.
He gave one short nod and faced forward again.
Guarding.
Not claiming.
And no one resolved it.
