Chi Li closed his eyes, curled up in the soft animal-hide bedding. His fiery red ears and tail drooped listlessly.
He buried his head in the crook of his arm, not wanting to see anyone.
But at that exact mont, a Beast Servant ca to announce that so female nad Xue wanted to see him.
Chi Li revealed one eye from the soft hide bedding, a watery glint in it. "...Tell her to get lost."
The Beast Servant imdiately realized the Witch Doctor was having another nightmare and quickly asked, "Should I prepare a bowl of Awakening dicine for you?"
"No need."
Chi Li yawned and slowly climbed out of bed, as if the glint of tears just now had been an illusion. He had returned to his usual lazy and arrogant deanor. "Get that female away from . Also, prepare a tub of water for my bath."
Chi Li loved to bathe.
Bathing three or four tis a day was normal for him.
Every ti he imrsed himself in the warm water, he felt disconnected from the clamor of the world.
The steam dampened the short, fiery red hair on his forehead. His fluffy fox ears and tail were soaked through, clinging to his body. He scooped up handfuls of water, trying with all his might to wash away the unbearable mories that clung to him.
After he was done, Chi Li went to the Witch Doctor Castle. The recent fire had caused large-scale burns among the Beastn, and he had been incredibly busy lately.
One of them, a Fifth Rank Silver Wolf Beastman, had the most severe burns. More than half of the fur on his beast form was gone, yet he didn’t make a sound. His well-defined face showed a mix of fortitude and distraction.
He seed to carry an unconcealable guilt and self-bla.
’What’s he blaming himself for?’
Chi Li couldn’t help but sneak a couple more glances at him.
Most of the Beastn had mild to moderate burns. He prescribed so dicine, told them to eat well and get plenty of rest, and with the powerful self-healing abilities of Beastn, they would be back on their feet in a couple of days.
The one with the most severe burns was still that Silver Wolf Beastman.
Ordinary dicinal soups couldn’t treat him; he needed to stay for a few more days of observation. But the Wolf Beast was incredibly anxious and wouldn’t cooperate with Chi Li’s treatnt.
"I already told you, normal dicine is useless for your injuries."
Chi Li’s tone was unfriendly; he had never been a patient person. "If you don’t want to spend the rest of your life with half your body hairless, then you’d better stay here for a few days. Only then can I gather the right herbs for your injuries and brew a decoction."
"I don’t need it. Just give the ordinary dicine."
Ling Hong’s expression was cold, his hands clenched tighter and tighter. It seed as if he would shift into his beast form and bolt out the next second. "I still have to go find soone!"
"Find soone?"
Chi Li looked as though he’d had a sudden realization. He set down the handful of herbs, tilted his head, and leaned against the wall with his arms crossed.
He glanced half-jokingly at the Wolf Beast’s scorched, wrinkled, and festering body. "No wonder your injuries are so severe. Good heavens, you didn’t run straight into the sea of fire to find them, did you?"
Ling Hong’s expression tightened. He lowered his head and remained silent, but the hands at his sides clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white.
Chi Li sighed, his voice tinged with sympathy. "That sea of fire spread for miles. Even if soone was in there, they would have been burned to nothing long ago. I advise you to just focus on healing here and not hold onto false hope..."
"She’s not dead!"
"Whatever you say." Chi Li couldn’t be bothered to argue. ’It was a once-in-a-century fire. How could anyone possibly have survived?’
Ling Hong lowered his head in silence, his short, silver-white hair falling ssily over his forehead. The corners of his eyes were red. For the first ti in his life, he felt the stinging, regretful urge to find a place and have a good cry.
He truly regretted it.
’Why was I so stupid back then? How could I not realize it was a trap, and so arrogantly and blindly tell An Jin and our clansn to wait for right there...’
’It was all my fault.’
’I was too stupid.’
The castle was empty and so quiet that only the man’s faint sobs could be heard. Chi Li looked at the usually stoic Wolf Beast with a face full of surprise. He pursed his lips, unable to utter any words of comfort.
"Ling Hong—!"
Suddenly, there was a commotion outside the door. The mont he heard the female’s voice, the silver-haired man’s body jolted. He stared at the doorway, his eyes wide with astonishnt.
The corners of his eyes were still red, and tear tracks still stained his face.
Ling Hong lunged forward almost instinctively, pulling the slender, petite female into a tight embrace. His voice trembled uncontrollably. "You... how are you not dead?"
An Jin, hearing those words for the second ti in a single day, was left speechless.
’As expected of people from the sa tribe. Their way of speaking is just suffocating.’
