Chapter 204: Ruining plans

"Fucking hell!" Javier cursed as his mother told him what had happened in the hall during the she-wolf council meeting and how the new Luna had changed a law that had stood for generations, and how many other Lunas were now supporting her and even supporting the Alpha for agreeing to it.

"I didn’t know she was capable of facing Laila and challenging her, let alone daring to change what has already been accepted for generations." Camilla mused, still unable to believe the girl had that much nerve in her. But then she had won the competition where people died, and she should have known better than to underestimate a woman who didn’t even rely on her wolf to get things done. Just what did she think she was doing, changing their law as if she had the right?

How dare she change anything at all? She was supposed to be like a puppet, someone who followed the law and lived quietly as the sacrificial lamb she was, until she either died from the curse or gave birth to a half Alpha heir that wouldn’t be accepted in Silver to be crowned. Camilla massaged her temple in distress as it became clearer by the minute that this girl was already doing far more than she had ever anticipated or planned for.

"Oh, Mami, she is asking for trouble, and by the moon I will give her exactly the trouble she is looking for in this pack!" Javier snapped, pacing the length of the room where his mother sat looking, for the first time in a long while, as genuinely worried as he was.

Because they both understood exactly what this meant. Having this many Lunas from other packs rallying behind her and throwing their support behind the change would grow Sebastian’s alliances and make him stronger and more untouchable on the Alpha seat, when everything they had spent years working toward depended entirely on the opposite outcome. This woman was going to dismantle their plans before they even had the chance to be set into motion.

And beyond ruining their plans, his problem with her was becoming deeply personal by the day, for she had done something to his wife that he hadn’t asked for and would never forgive.

After he had gone and brought his mate back from that wolfless woman’s penthouse, something about Sofia had shifted in a way that unsettled him to his core. She no longer covered her face with her hair when she walked into a room. She had even begun taking her bath in the morning without asking his permission first, as if it were the most natural thing in the world to simply decide something for herself.

How dare she turn his Sofia against him? He had maintained his control over her for so long, shaped her so carefully into someone who needed him for every small decision, that he was no longer used to her doing anything at all without consulting him first, even something as small and insignificant as when she bathed.

If she could make that decision on her own now, what would stop her from one day deciding to walk away from him entirely? What would stop her from turning her family against him and unraveling everything he had built around her? Javier couldn’t let that happen. He wouldn’t.

"Just as I told you before, you are not to touch a hair on her body without my permission. I haven’t yet gotten full confirmation on whether she is his mate or not, and until I do, you leave her alone." Camilla said strictly, looking up at her pacing son whose jaw hardened visibly at her words.

"And how are we going to find that out?" Javier asked.

Camilla looked thoughtful for a moment before she rose from her seat and said, "We are not close enough to her to know it ourselves, but there is a way to find out. We find it out through someone she trusts. Someone like your brother."

She had never paid much attention to Nick, for he had never seemed to share her mindset and had taken far more after his father’s genes than hers. In fact he looked much more like the Kades than her son Javier did, and just like his father, he had no appetite for the heavy responsibility of the Alpha seat. A child she couldn’t gain anything from was nothing but useless to her, and she had always preferred to put her energy and effort into the one who stood to give her more.

However, right now, she knew that drawing him closer might make him the only one capable of giving her the information she needed.

Javier couldn’t help but scoff. "You think that little dickhead would help you betray a girl he follows around like a foolish puppy?" He let out a humorless laugh, already knowing his mother was embarking on a mission that wouldn’t succeed in any way because Nick simply wouldn’t do it.

His brother should have been born a useless girl. It would have suited him far better given his spinelessness, and Javier would have appreciated a sister much more. At least she would have married into an important pack and brought her husband’s support to his reign, rather than a useless brother who spent his time supporting his enemy.

"Good luck convincing my loser of a brother, but all I know is that that woman will have to pay for what she did, whether or not she turns out to be the Alpha’s mate. If I don’t teach her a lesson, she will start to believe she is something mighty and begin changing our entire world piece by piece before I take the seat."

Camilla fixed her son with a hard warning look. "I am warning you, Javier. Do not do anything to ruin my plans or you will regret it."

Javier wanted to scoff but held it back and said, "I won’t. I won’t do anything to her yet, not until you finish convincing my coward of a brother." He gave his word in a grumble.
