Emma’s heart stopped beating.
She felt it happen—one mont her chest was rising and falling normally, and the next, everything went still. But sohow, she was still conscious, still aware.
"Emma!" Kael shouted, but his voice sounded far away.
She looked down at her own body lying on the kitchen floor. Luna was still trapped in that silver-eyed state, speaking in the cosmic voice, but now Emma was floating above them both.
"What’s happening to ?" Emma whispered.
"You’re dying," said a familiar voice behind her.
Emma spun around and gasped. It was herself—but different. This other Emma had dark hair instead of blonde, and her eyes were filled with shadows. It was Shadow Emma, the dark version of herself that had caused so much trouble years ago.
"You," Emma breathed. "But you were destroyed."
Shadow Emma shook her head. "I was never destroyed. I was waiting. Hiding inside you until this mont."
"Why now?"
"Because your daughter needs both sides of you to save her. The light and the dark. The human and the supernatural."
Emma felt panic rising in her chest—or where her chest used to be. "I don’t understand."
"When Luna shared her cosmic power with you and Kael, it awakened every supernatural ability you ever had. Including ."
Emma watched as Kael tried desperately to wake up her body while Luna continued speaking in that strange voice. Her family was falling apart, and she was stuck floating around like a ghost.
"How do I help them?"
Shadow Emma’s expression softened. "By accepting that you were never just human, Emma. You were always ant for sothing bigger."
"But I chose to be normal. I gave up my powers."
"You gave up the supernatural abilities, but you never lost your real power."
"What real power?"
Shadow Emma pointed down at Kael, who was crying as he held Emma’s lifeless hand. "Love. The ability to fight for the people you care about no matter what the cost."
Emma felt sothing click into place in her mind. "That’s why Luna’s consciousness is fading. She’s trying to carry all this cosmic responsibility alone."
"Exactly. She needs her mother to remind her who she really is."
Emma looked at Shadow Emma with new eyes. "You’re not here to cause trouble, are you?"
"I’m here to make things right. All these years, I’ve been watching you live the life I thought you should have lived. But I was wrong. Your choices made you stronger, not weaker."
"So what do we do?"
Shadow Emma held out her hand. "We beco whole again. Light and shadow, human and supernatural. Everything Luna needs us to be."
Emma hesitated. "What if combining with you changes into soone Kael and Luna don’t recognize?"
"It won’t. Because now I understand what you understood all along—love is more powerful than any magic."
Emma took Shadow Emma’s hand, and imdiately felt herself changing. She wasn’t just the girl who gave up her powers anymore. She wasn’t just the mother who worried about her supernatural daughter. She was both, and everything in between.
Her spirit shot back into her body like lightning.
Emma gasped and sat up on the kitchen floor. Her eyes were glowing with silver light, just like Luna’s, but her pupils were still there. She was connected to the cosmic power, but she was still herself.
"Emma!" Kael helped her stand, relief flooding his face.
"I’m okay," Emma said. "Better than okay. I know how to save Luna."
She walked over to her daughter, who was still speaking in that ancient voice about cosmic responsibilities and universal balance.
"Luna," Emma said firmly. "Co back to us."
The silver eyes turned toward Emma, but there was no recognition in them. "The Bridge-Keeper is fulfilling her purpose. The human child is no longer necessary."
"Wrong," Emma said. She placed both hands on Luna’s face. "The human child is the most necessary part. Without her, you’re just another cosmic force. With her, you’re sothing the universe has never seen before."
Emma felt her combined power—human love and supernatural strength—flowing into Luna.
"Rember who you are," Emma whispered. "Rember your first word was ’Mama.’ Rember how you cried when you thought you lost your favorite stuffed animal. Rember teaching your father how to braid your hair."
For a mont, nothing happened.
Then Luna blinked, and her pupils returned.
"Mama?" she said in her own voice.
Emma hugged her daughter tightly. "I’m here, baby. We’re all here."
Kael joined the hug, and for the first ti in hours, Emma felt like her family was complete again.
But their reunion was interrupted by another voice.
"Well done."
They turned to see Shadow Emma standing near the kitchen window. But she looked different now—cleaner sohow, like she’d been washed in starlight.
"You can see her?" Emma asked Kael and Luna.
They both nodded.
Shadow Emma smiled. "I’m not a shadow anymore. Thanks to you, I’m sothing new. A spirit guide, maybe. A guardian angel."
Luna stepped forward curiously. "You’re the part of Mom that she gave up, aren’t you?"
"I was. Now I’m the part of her that chose to co back. And I have a proposal for you, Luna."
"What kind of proposal?"
"You wanted to balance being human with being a cosmic guardian. What if you had a spirit guide who understood both worlds? Soone who could help you navigate the supernatural while keeping you connected to your humanity?"
Emma felt her heart skip a beat. "You want to be Luna’s guide?"
Shadow Emma nodded. "I’ve spent years learning from your choices, Emma. Let use that knowledge to help Luna make good choices too."
Luna looked at Emma. "Is it okay with you, Mom?"
Emma thought about it. Having Shadow Emma around would be strange, but she was no longer the angry, destructive force she used to be. She’d been transford by experiencing love and sacrifice.
"If it helps keep you safe," Emma said, "then yes."
Shadow Emma bowed formally to Luna. "Then I pledge to serve as your guide between worlds, Luna Blackwood. I’ll help you protect both your human life and your cosmic duties."
Luna smiled. "I accept."
The mont Luna spoke those words, Shadow Emma began to glow. She was becoming sothing between human and spirit, visible but not quite solid.
"This is perfect," Luna said excitedly. "I’ll have the best of everything—family, normal life, and cosmic powers."
But Emma noticed sothing that made her blood run cold.
Shadow Emma’s smile was too wide. Too knowing.
And in her eyes, just for a second, Emma saw a flicker of the old darkness.
"Luna," Emma said urgently. "Wait—"
But it was too late. Shadow Emma had already placed her hand on Luna’s forehead, and both of them were glowing with an energy that felt wrong.
"Thank you, child," Shadow Emma said, and her voice was changing. "Now I can finally take what should have been mine from the beginning."
Emma realized with horror that she’d been tricked.
Shadow Emma hadn’t been purified at all. She’d been planning this mont for years, waiting for the chance to steal cosmic power for herself.
And Emma had just helped her do it.
