After the plane landed, Cheng Qiaobei switched his phone to active mode and saw a ssage from Chen Ningxi on WeChat. He imdiately dialed her number.

"How is she? Is it serious?" Cheng Qiaobei asked, "Okay, ... I understand, I’ll take Wei Lai ho first."

After hanging up, Wei Lai said, "You don’t need to take . You go first if you have sothing to do."

Cheng Qiaobei said, "To Danjiang Hospital, it’s on the way past your place."

Wei Lai asked, "Who’s in the hospital?"

Cheng Qiaobei replied, "Ning Xi’s good friend, Liang Lei, just got rear-ended on the expressway."

"Is it serious?" Wei Lai asked with concern.

"Not sure yet, she’s already in the hospital, and Ning Xi hasn’t arrived. The specifics are unclear."

Dragging his suitcase, Cheng Qiaobei walked briskly toward the exit and dialed Lin Hanrui’s phone, but it kept ringing without anyone answering.

He anxiously said, "What is Lin Hanrui doing? Not answering at a crucial mont."

At that ti, Lin Hanrui was at a construction site at a hotel in Zhoushan. Feeling hot, he had draped his coat over a nearby engineering vehicle, and his phone was in the coat pocket. Due to the loud noise from the construction, he didn’t hear the calls and missed several.

Chen Ningxi was the first to arrive at the hospital and asked the ergency room nurse, "Hello, was there a woman from a traffic accident brought in just now, nad Liang Lei?"

The nurse said, "Yes, just went in. You can find her in Ergency Room 1."

Chen Ningxi replied, "Thank you."

Her eyes filled with anxiety, she ran inside, her heart beating like a drum.

When she reached Ergency Room 1, there were six beds inside. Chen Ningxi glanced around and saw Liang Lei lying in the corner next to the window.

Her eyes were closed, with a bandage on her forehead. A faint trace of blood had seeped into the center of the bandage, and compared with her complexion, she appeared pale as paper. Her thin body was buried under a white blanket, and Chen Ningxi’s heart sank.

Standing by the bedside, Chen Ningxi’s lips trembled unconsciously as she called out, "Liang Lei, Liang Lei."

The person on the bed kept her eyes tightly shut, breathing long and steadily, as if asleep.

Chen Ningxi’s gaze moved to Liang Lei’s hand. She slipped her hand into Liang Lei’s through the gap in the blanket, holding her hand, it still felt warm and soft.

"Liang Lei," Chen Ningxi softly called.

Liang Lei opened her eyes, sleepily saying, "I heard, I heard, this urgent calling... Ai, today I almost kicked the bucket, guess I’m pretty lucky."

Chen Ningxi held her hands tightly, "You scared to death. Are you hurt anywhere else?"

Yawning, Liang Lei pointed to the bandage on her head, "Just this one spot."

Chen Ningxi said, "That’s strange, the person on the phone told your injuries were serious and asked to hurry over."

Liang Lei shook her head dismissively, "When they carried out, I was covered in blood. Anyone would think I was done for, but actually, I just had a small cut on my head. The doctor who treated my wound said it hit a capillary, so it looked a bit scary."

Chen Ningxi asked, "Did you tell the doctor you’re pregnant?"

Due to dication contraindications during pregnancy, Liang Lei had already inford the doctor after being carried in on a stretcher.

"I told them."

Chen Ningxi was relieved, "Good. You’re sure you’re not hurt anywhere else?"

A faint smile appeared on Liang Lei’s face, her voice weak. She had always thought she wouldn’t experience morning sickness, but slling the disinfectant mixed with the complex odors of buns and pancakes made her vomit imdiately. She had thrown up all of her breakfast and lunch, leaving her stomach empty and herself very weak.

Chen Ningxi asked, "You don’t look well. Do you want sothing to eat? I can get you so."

Liang Lei grabbed her, shaking her head, "No, don’t buy anything. I can’t eat; just the sll of disinfectant makes want to throw up."

"What should we do then?" Chen Ningxi asked urgently.

Liang Lei said, "Soon, I’ll be transferred to the inpatient departnt. The sll there should be a bit milder."

The nurse called for Chen Ningxi to sort out the hospitalization procedures. Since Liang Lei was pregnant, many tests could only be arranged by the ward doctor in the inpatient departnt.

After completing the admission procedures, Chen Ningxi pushed a wheelchair into the elevator, going directly to the obstetrics and gynecology departnt on the tenth floor.

The environnt in the inpatient departnt was much better than in the ergency room, at the very least, it was less crowded.

After settling Liang Lei onto the bed, Chen Ningxi’s phone rang. It was Cheng Qiaobei calling. He was already in the ergency room. Chen Ningxi told him the room number and hung up.

Liang Lei opened her eyes, her voice weak, "Cheng Qiaobei also ca? Wasn’t he on a business trip?"

Chen Ningxi said, "He just got back today."

Liang Lei closed her eyes again, "No need for him to see . It’s nothing serious. Ning Xi, I’ve been overworked with my project recently, severely sleep-deprived. I’m going to nap for a bit."

Chen Ningxi adjusted her blanket, "Sleep."

Following the room number given by Chen Ningxi, Cheng Qiaobei found his way there. Upon entering, he saw Chen Ningxi making a shushing gesture.

She got up to greet him, leading Cheng Qiaobei outside to talk in the hallway.

In a low voice, Chen Ningxi asked, "Where’s Lin Hanrui? Can you call him and tell him that Liang Lei was hit and is in the hospital?"

Cheng Qiaobei said, "I called him on my way here, but no one answered."

Chen Ningxi had also tried reaching Lin Hanrui first, but no one answered.

"What’s with him, always unreachable in crucial monts?" Chen Ningxi worried, "Earlier, the attending doctor asked to go over. Based on Liang Lei’s current test results, there’s a suspicion of threatened miscarriage, and they need to discuss how to proceed with treatnt, which requires a family mber to sign. Liang Lei’s parents are traveling out of town. She doesn’t want them inford. Letting them know would only add to their worries."

Cheng Qiaobei said, "Don’t worry, I’ll try calling again."

He moved aside and dialed Lin Hanrui’s number once more, still no answer. This ti, he contacted the front desk of the Zhoushan hotel and learned that Lin Hanrui was at a construction site in the back mountain. They imdiately sent soone to have him call back.

After hanging up, Cheng Qiaobei said, "They found him at the site; he probably didn’t hear the phone."

Chen Ningxi sighed, "Sigh..."

Over ten minutes later, Lin Hanrui’s call ca through.

"Old Cheng, you there?"

Cheng Qiaobei asked, "Why weren’t you answering your phone?"

With Chen Ningxi standing nearby, they heard the voice on the other end say, "I left my phone in my coat. It was hot, so I tossed my coat in the car and didn’t hear it."

Cheng Qiaobei spoke sternly, "Liang Lei was hit by a car. Hurry to Danjiang Hospital, the tenth-floor inpatient departnt, room 1019."

"What happened to Leizi?"

Amidst the loud noise from drills nearby, Lin Hanrui hadn’t caught it all. He quickly moved to a quieter spot and heard Cheng Qiaobei say, "Liang Lei was hit by a car, get to Danjiang Hospital quickly."

Lin Hanrui felt a buzz in his head, like a train whistling past, ringing in his ears for a few seconds, "...Alright, I’m coming right away."

He dashed to the parking lot, sprinting all the way.

...

In the hospital room, Liang Lei had just finished a bit of millet porridge and fallen asleep. Chen Ningxi picked up so fruit nearby, "I’m going to go wash this fruit for her."

Cheng Qiaobei, tired from a long flight, leaned back in a chair, dozing off.
