Chapter 18: Chapter 018 How embarrassing_1

The cupboard still had so dried fish left, so Muniang fried them directly. Then she scooped them out, diced so red chili peppers, and stir-fried them together, rounding out another dish. But considering they were all at dishes, and Mrs. Lin’s body also needed a mix of at and vegetables, she took out the basket of eggs, boiled four, and made a large bowl of egg soup with a handful of baby bok choy.

Because she had to take into account Erliang’s big appetite, she made sure the portions were generous. Muniang didn’t mind any longer; soon there would be plenty of Silver, no fear of spending a few coins.

Mrs. Lin looked at the full spread on the table, her smile so wide she couldn’t close her mouth, not even sure where to place her chopsticks, “Muniang, when did mother not realize your cooking was this good.”

“Before, mother also didn’t realize how capable I was,” Muniang laughed.

Erliang ate quickly, never stopping his mouth, yet he didn’t look the least bit crude. On the contrary, his every move was graceful, and in a rare break, he gulped down his food and said, “I have always known my wife is very capable!”

Muniang smiled, picked up a cloth, and wiped a bit of soup that had dripped onto the corner of his mouth. Mrs. Lin saw this and didn’t quite know how to feel—was it the worry that her daughter had married a fool, or joy at seeing her daughter and son-in-law loving and respecting each other? But since she had already accepted the reality, and besides, the fool was genuinely devoted to her daughter, Mrs. Lin had no choice but to consider it a happy match.

At night, Muniang did her usual task of applying dicine to Erliang’s wounds, but now she was very careful with her touches, lest the man turn into a “beast” again. From Muniang’s perspective, as a man, Erliang’s physique was close to perfect, his wheat-colored skin, clearly defined muscles, even the fierce scar on his chest seed to enhance his masculine charm. Muniang’s heart raced every ti, her face flushed with heat.

“Wife, why is your face red?”

“Hot.”

“Then let

take off your clothes.”

With a glare from Muniang, Erliang sheepishly withdrew his hand, blinked his eyes, and continued to ask, “Wife, when will we have children?”

Muniang’s hand paused, “Who taught you that?”

“No, look, Mrs. Du and Mr. Du have children, Mr. Pan and Mrs. Xiangcao have children, even Shitou and his wife have children, but why don’t we have any?” Erliang asked with particular innocence.

Muniang rubbed her forehead, “We just got married. To have a baby, we’ll have to wait at least a year.” She confused him for the ti being.

“But how is a baby made? Will it just happen naturally after a year?” The little buddy Erliang was very persistent.

“Yes,” Muniang answered offhandedly.

“But Shitou said you have to ‘turn the clouds and rain’ with your wife to have a baby. Wife, how do you turn? Roll around on the bed?”

“Ah!” Accompanied by Erliang’s cry of pain, Muniang calmly let go of her hand that had been pressing on his wound, “Oh, there’s bleeding; I told you not to move around. Now you know it hurts.”

Erliang wore a look of grievance; he clearly hadn’t moved.

Muniang t his gaze coolly, “Do you have sothing to say?”

Erliang shook his head like a rattle drum, “No!” When the wife isn’t angry, that’s when she’s the scariest!

Early in the morning, Erliang had been awake for quite so ti. He started by lying on the bed watching Muniang sleep, but soon grew bored. As he tossed and turned, debating whether to wake Muniang to chat and relieve his boredom, he already felt a pair of cool, faintly glowing eyes on him.

Erliang gave an embarrassed smile, “Wife, you’re up so early?”

In response, he received a thump on the head: “Can’t you wake up later in the morning?!” Muniang really couldn’t understand how this man always woke up earlier than the chickens!

Erliang touched his sore forehead, feeling wronged. He didn’t want to wake up so early either, but every ti at this hour, he’d naturally wake up. Could he help it?

As Muniang was preparing to wash the clothes by the river, Erliang wanted to tag along, to which she responded helplessly, “All the won go to wash clothes by the river; when do you ever see a man following along?”

If she really let him go with her to wash clothes at the river, who knows how the villagers might mock Erliang. After all, he was a man who was expected to lead, not follow his wife around. In this male-dominated society, that was simply intolerable.

Never mind her gossiping, but Erliang was always sensitive; the overt and covert comnts would fall on his ears. With the ntality of a six- or seven-year-old child, he naturally did not possess Muniang’s robust attitude to ignore these petty words and whispers.

Erliang grumbled, “But didn’t my wife say last ti that husband and wife should be inseparable during the day?”

With an exasperated look, Muniang rembered that last ti she tricked him into believing that couples should stay together all day, but at night, they should not disturb each other’s sleep. She had no idea why this fool had such a good mory.

“But I had planned to have you do sothing else for . Since you so wish to be lazy by my side, forget it then. All that talk about providing for , seems like it was just lip service,” Muniang had to find another way.

Indeed, this approach was particularly effective on Erliang: “I’m a man of my word! Whatever my wife wants

to do, I absolutely won’t be lazy!”

Muniang chuckled internally, but maintained a doubtful expression, “Really?”

Erliang nodded earnestly.

“Then go up the mountain and bring

back a basketful of hawthorns.”

Muniang had already thought about making candied haws to give to every household in the village. Over the years, most of the villagers had helped her family; otherwise, she and Mrs. Lin would have starved to death. Gifted at to every household would appear showy, and she was not that affluent anyway. Candied haws, though inexpensive, were novel and popular, especially with children in every household.

But there were no longer any hawthorns at ho, and this was the perfect task to assign to Erliang.

“Alright, I’ll go right now!”

Muniang laughed, but still made sure to give serious instructions: “Good, obediently follow Dahei to the hawthorn trees near the foot of the mountain and pick so to bring back. Don’t get lost; it would be troubleso if you did.”

Dahei, as if aware of the importance of his task, howled twice.

Erliang glanced at Dahei, who was barking beside him, and his handso face wrinkled with displeasure: “I don’t want to follow it; how embarrassing.”

As if she had anticipated his reaction, Muniang casually tossed a frisbee. Dahei leapt up and caught it in his mouth, proudly wagging his tail at Muniang.

Muniang said coolly, “When you can snatch the frisbee away from Dahei, then I’ll let Dahei follow you.”

With a dark face, Erliang followed the triumphant Dahei up the mountain.

Returning to the kitchen, Muniang packed so fine white rice and half a pound of pork into a small bamboo basket to take to Mr. Xue. She hadn’t forgotten about her promise to bring him sothing from yesterday. Mr. Xue lived by the riverbank, and Muniang took this opportunity to deliver it on her way there.
