Sister-in-law Wang had never actually seen Liu Qingqing, but under the watchful eyes of the crowd, she couldn’t back down and contradict herself, so she gritted her teeth and stuck to her previous statent, "That’s right, that day the old lady was at Lao Mo’s House and saw that kiln girl wife of yours with my own eyes! Your Wu family really has no sha, even marrying a kiln girl, isn’t this tarnishing the reputation of Liu Yang Village? Your whole family should be driven out of here to save our village from embarrassnt."
Having said that, a smug expression crossed Sister-in-law Wang’s face, as she saw herself as considering the best interests of the entire village, wondering who would still stand up for that despicable Wu’s.
Little did she know, in the next mont, the two won who had been speaking earlier didn’t hesitate to expose her lie, "Wang’s, you did go to Lao Mo’s House that day, but Mo Hong’s family was busy showing off Mo Yongxi’s engagent bracelet around the village, and had sent you away early. Who are you trying to fool now?"
"That’s right, I saw it too! I was cooking in the kitchen at the ti, and you passed by the window outside. I even heard you cursing Mo Hong’s family, wishing that the pair of gold bracelets would be stolen, wishing that Mo Yongxi would not be liked by her in-laws. How can you lie through your teeth like this now, ruining the girl’s reputation? What has she ever done to you?"
The two won pointed at Sister-in-law Wang, fiercely incensed. As won themselves, they knew all too well how important a girl’s reputation was. Such rumors, if they reached the ears of the daughter-in-law of the Wu family, would be nothing short of driving her to her death – the viciousness of this woman’s heart was truly appalling.
Caught off guard by her lie being deconstructed so quickly, Sister-in-law Wang, who had only a slight wit to her na, panicked and started shouting, "No, I went back to Lao Mo’s House later for sothing and ran into that kiln girl. It’s just that you didn’t see , yes, you just didn’t see !"
Most of the people present didn’t believe a word Sister-in-law Wang said, and now with witnesses to the lie, they began to show looks of disdain. So even shouted bluntly, "We should get rid of troublemakers like her who can’t stand to see others do well. Without these people, our village would be so much more peaceful."
"You’re absolutely right. Out of everyone in the village, it’s Wang’s tongue that is the longest, she dares to say anything. With her vile mouth, she has caused no end of trouble in the village! Even without a man in the house, she refuses to live a quiet and respectable life. Such people deserve to be cast out onto the streets with their whole family."
"I don’t want to see this woman anymore either. Back when Wang Dali was driven out of the village, they should have driven out the whole family to save them from harming the villagers! Why don’t we go to the fields and call the village chief right now? Since Wang Dali can’t co back anyway, let them reunite outside as a family, and we’ll be doing a good deed."
"..."
The crowd loudly condemned Sister-in-law Wang, and what had started as a conflict between the Wu family and the Wang family suddenly escalated into the entire village turning against Sister-in-law Wang.
No wonder so many people couldn’t stand Sister-in-law Wang and her family. In truth, their behaviors were utterly excessive, with not a single sensible person among them. Not to ntion Wang Dali, who had a criminal record and had already been driven out of the village, Sister-in-law Wang alone, with her love for gossip and taking advantage of others, was enough to make people detest her.
Since the Wang family had lost a worker, Sister-in-law Wang began to be crafty and lazy, refusing to properly tend to the fields, causing them to be overgrown with weeds, and much of the crop had been eaten by pests. As a result, hardly anything was harvested this autumn.
Worried that her family would have no grain to eat and would have to survive on air, Sister-in-law Wang reached into other people’s bowls. People in the village would dry their grain on the threshing grounds, and she took advantage of the hot midday sun when no one was watching to go and steal grain with a cloth bag, almost every family that dried grain had been stolen from by her.
Sobody inadvertently discovered Sister-in-law Wang sneaking grain ho in broad daylight. Though they couldn’t catch her red-handed and the amount of grain stolen wasn’t much, she was a troubleso woman. If anyone accused her of stealing grain, she would not hesitate to strip naked and accuse them of lewdness and sexual harassnt.
Everyone was quite frustrated but turned a blind eye, considering it their bad luck and took extra precautions during grain drying, not giving Sister-in-law Wang a chance to steal. However, the families who had been robbed by her held a grudge, and if they saw her on the road, they wouldn’t even deign to speak to her.
What was most troubleso were the Wang family’s children, both big and small, who often road in groups into others’ cornfields, sweet potato patches, and vegetable gardens. They didn’t just steal corn, sweet potatoes or vegetables – they trampled all over the place, crushing the crops into the dirt.
