Chapter 1669: Chapter 1668: Bei Yun, Be a Human
“You’re absolutely right. That man harbors malicious intent. Even if I’m intrigued by his redies, I would never use them,” Yang Wenxiao wholeheartedly agreed with Qiao Xiaomai’s words.
The southern region harbors far too many unknown herbal dicines—even Bei Lingsu wouldn’t dare vouch for them. How could he trust Bei Yun’s prescriptions? That man is insidiously cunning; who knows if he’s hidden traps in so crucial step.
Thinking of this, he couldn’t help but sigh. Over the past year, Bei Yun had treated nurous patients. Could those people have already fallen victim to his sches?
“Call Bei Lingsu over,” he said imdiately.
This matter needed clarification. Bei Yun’s patients were either nobles or wealthy people. If they had been poisoned, the upper echelons of Daqi would be utterly dood.
Qiao Xiaomai noticed Yang Wenxiao’s suddenly serious tone and quickly asked what was wrong. Yang Wenxiao shared his concerns, and Qiao Xiaomai imdiately grew tense—damn it, could Bei Yun really be that vicious?
She couldn’t even bother probing Yang Wenxiao’s thoughts on the Divine Liquid anymore. Instead, she sat down and joined him for breakfast. After breakfast, just as the dishes were cleared away, Bei Lingsu arrived.
Bei Lingsu was also almost sleepless all night. After dragging Bei Yun back to the Bei Residence yesterday evening, she interrogated him—or more precisely, she pressed him for answers.
The last ti she had pressured him over the Wu family matter, she’d fed him an herbal concoction—sothing she had always felt guilty about. This ti, however, she chose a softer approach, pleading earnestly and coaxing him patiently.
Near dawn, Bei Yun finally conceded, drew a detailed sketch of the Soul Chasing Root, and thoroughly described its growth location, suggesting they send soone to harvest it.
But, testing the Soul Chasing Root’s effects would inevitably require human lives. In a rare mont of conscience, Bei Yun suggested she use prisoners from the death row for the experints.
When Yang Wenxiao heard Bei Lingsu recount the events of the night, he asked whether Bei Yun might have hard his patients.
Bei Lingsu shook her head quickly at the question. She had reviewed each one of Bei Yun’s prescriptions ticulously. Besides, Bei Yun was only responsible for prescribing redies, not selling herbal dicines. He never had the opportunity to tamper with anything.
With Bei Lingsu’s reassurances, both Yang Wenxiao and Qiao Xiaomai breathed a sigh of relief. Yang Wenxiao instructed Bei Lingsu to keep a close watch on Bei Yun and forbade him from leaving the Bei Residence until the Bei family arrived.
Bei Lingsu acknowledged the instruction but expressed a desire to check on Tong Sanlang, as she was quite concerned about his health.
“Sanlang doesn’t have any major issues now. You should prioritize keeping an eye on Bei Yun,” Yang Wenxiao ordered.
Bei Lingsu took heed and returned to the Bei Residence.
At the ti, Bei Yun was idly sitting at the entrance of his tent, sketching. He was under house arrest and could no longer set up his booth to treat patients, so he resorted to painting instead.
One of his paintings could fetch quite a bit of silver.
Bei Lingsu walked over, glanced at his work for a mont, and then remarked, “If those wealthy folks knew your heart was actually so dark, do you think they’d still co to you for treatnt?”
Bei Yun was depicting a grand scene of thousands selling dicinal wine. Startled by her sudden question, his brush paused mid-stroke. “Aunt Lingsu, my heart has always been dark.”
“Don’t you wish it could match the color of a normal person’s?” Bei Lingsu asked.
“I am what I am. It’s hard to change one’s nature, just like it’s hard to change the course of a river,” he replied.
“Then what will happen to you in your next life?” Bei Lingsu sighed faintly and added, “The Bei family resides on that Sea Island. When you’re there, you won’t have personal freedom.”
“I don’t have any personal freedom now either, yet I’ve still managed to enjoy the past year,” he countered.
“This is the Capital City—there’s plenty of novelty here. The Sea Island isn’t even as lively as Yupo Prefecture City,” Bei Lingsu comnted, rubbing her face in exasperation. She then said sincerely, “Bei Yun, please—be a decent human being for once. Consider this my plea.”
