"Hello, Preston. It’s , Jared."

Preston heard the familiar lofty tone from the other side and his eyes shook in shock. His Deputy had been bang on with her assessnt of Jared. The man had relented even before the two days were up. What was happening?

Preston’s eyes imdiately went to Valerie and he nodded her slightly, indicating to everyone who was calling him and noticed her lips curve up. She gestured to him to continue the call and they’d speak after he was done.

Preston didn’t react as he watched his friends leave him alone, allowing him to execute his plan.

"Are you so stunned by my call that you forgot how to speak?" Jared teased and Preston scowled in disgust.

"Jared, where have you been? What the hell did you do?" Preston’s whisper yelled at him as he tried to remain composed.

"Why are you so agitated? It’s not like this is the first ti I have done sothing so amazing." Jared boasted and Preston rolled his eyes in anger.

"Where did you vanish off to? Do you have any idea how worried I was?" Preston lied. Oh, he was worried alright. But Jared was the last person he’d ever worry about. That man didn’t deserve his worry at all.

"And Noah and the others are pissed off. All your warehouses have been destroyed and the gangs that supported you have vanished. What did you do Jared?" Preston cried as if he was really concerned for him.

"Well, it’s a given considering the blow I gave them." Jared gloated. "That reminds . How is Ivy? Is she dead or about to die? My n couldn’t enter the floor she was being treated in. So, I don’t know about her status."

Preston now understood why his Deputy had been damn sure that Jared would call him. After all, the man had kept an eye on the hospital. His n would inform him for sure if they were to see Preston there.

’What a scumbag!’ He thought, his eyes filled with nothing but sheer hatred.

"Umm, Jared. Ivy is not dead." Preston whispered, making sure to appear as if he was trying hard to keep himself hidden while he spoke to him.

"She’ll be soon. Is that why you visited the hospital today? How’s everyone? Are they mourning? Are they filled with anger, sadness, grief and helplessness? How’s Noah? Did the blow I gave him destroy his peace of mind?" Jared sounded unsurprisingly delighted.

"Jared, Ivy is not dead and the reason I went to visit her was because she gained consciousness yesterday. The doctors have declared her to be out of danger." Preston started doing his job, hoping that Jared would believe him.

Jared was wicked but shrewd and it’d do no one good if he were to discover his weird behavior and start doubting him. He needed to be by his side until their plan was executed and Jared was captured successfully.

"What? How is that possible!"

Preston heard Jared shout followed by a loud crash on the other side and his lips barely lifted into a small smile.

"Yes. She’s out of danger and I visited her to confirm the sa."

"That’s impossible. After the blow I gave to her head, there’s no way in hell she’d have survived it. Preston, are you lying to ?" Jared’s voice turned low as he threatened him.

"Why will I lie to you? Do you really think I’d do sothing like that? You can get your n to confirm it. And since you don’t believe , there’s no need for us to talk anymore." Preston ended the call imdiately and waited.

From his past experiences, every ti Jared had doubted him, he had ended the call in anger and Jared had called him right away to appease him. So, if that was the case again, he’d be getting his call again soon.

Barely a few seconds passed when his phone rang again and Preston disconnected it, following his usual behavior so as to not raise suspicions.

The next instant, his phone dinged and Preston looked at the ssage he knew by heart. After all, it was the sa ssage he’d receive every ti.

’Preston, pick up the call. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have doubted you.’

Again, his phone rang and this ti, Preston accepted the call. He didn’t speak a word as he sucked in deep breaths to depict that he was trying hard to curb his anger.

"How is it possible? How did Ivy get out of danger?" And like always, Jared didn’t apologize to him again and started speaking about the matter that was bound to make him doubt himself.

"I have no idea. But that’s the truth." Preston replied, not doing anything to mask his anger. "The doctors say there might be so sort of effects as it was her brain that was injured."

"I don’t give a damn about it. I want her dead, not alive and breathing. How could she defy death and ?" Jared seethed and Preston realized that he had got under his skin successfully.

"But..."

"She was supposed to be dead. I can’t believe she fought her fate and escaped her death."

Preston heard Jared’s roar followed by sothing being kicked and he tilted his head, his eyes filled with nothing but amusent. He was enjoying the man’s plight. It was not every day that Jared beca this agitated and showed his anger.

"What else do you know? Tell everything." Jared ordered which Preston didn’t mind.

"Ivy will be moved to Noah’s mansion tomorrow evening and she’ll recuperate over there. They are scared that if she continues staying in the hospital you might find out about her and do sothing again." Preston did what was expected of him and relayed all that he was supposed to say.

"Fuck! Damn it." Jared cursed and Preston’s brows shot up in wonder.

"It’ll take around 12 hours to return and by the ti I do, Ivy will be shifted already," Jared mumbled to himself. "But that doesn’t an I can’t do anything to her."

"Jared, what are you planning?" Preston asked curiously.

"To finish what I left incomplete."

"Huh?" Although Preston knew what he was talking about, he feigned ignorance.

"Ivy defied her fate once. But she can’t do it again and I’ll make sure to watch her die this ti." Jared declared. "Preston, I’ll be returning to the country tomorrow. I’ll call you after I reach safely."

With that, the call ended.
