Serena paused for a mont before asking, "What about your ex?"
"What about my ex?" Aiden repeated, his brow quirking in question.
"Are you asking ? I’m asking you," she shot back. "I know you’re only mine, but if you were to et one of your exes and act all comfortable with them, I’d still feel jealous. So, have you been in touch with any of them? Would you look at any of them again?"
Aiden stayed quiet for a beat, his gaze drifting before he finally slanted her a look. "I do have a few exes," he admitted casually, "but no one serious enough to rember. Not even the woman I almost married."
Serena’s eyes widened, her curiosity spiking. "You almost married soone? Did you propose to her? Did you kneel down and everything?"
Aiden sighed, running a hand through his hair as if to push away the weight of the conversation. He had just thought he could avoid walking into this trap. Yet here he was, not just walking into it, but jumping headfirst.
"No," he replied firmly. "I didn’t propose to her. And I definitely didn’t kneel down. It wasn’t like that." He hesitated, then added, "She was soone I dated for a while. At so point, she asked for a ring, so I gave her one. Everyone else assud we were getting married after that. I didn’t see a reason to correct them. I would have to get married ultimately and I thought she was an okay person."
He paused, glancing at Serena’s expression. Her brows were furrowed and she was staring at him as if he’d grown a second head.
Serena blinked, her brows knitting together as she stared at him, clearly struggling to process his words. "You didn’t correct anyone because she was an okay person?" she asked incredulously. "Wow. No wonder you were willing to marry soone who was almost dead."
Aiden gave a wry smile at her bluntness. It was true, in a way. Marriage had never been sothing he cared about deeply. That had only changed when he fell for the beautiful, infuriating woman sitting next to him.
"Because I didn’t care enough," he admitted with a shrug. "Marriage wasn’t serious to . But it seed to make her happy at the ti, so I just... let it happen."
Serena tilted her head, studying him as though trying to read between the lines. "So, you just went along with it? Until what—she figured out you didn’t actually care about getting married and was offended or sothing?"
Aiden shook his head, his jaw tightening slightly. "Until she thought I was so in love with her that I’d overlook everything," he said quietly, his voice hardening. "Including walking in on her screwing soone else."
Serena’s eyes widened again, her jaw dropping slightly. "Whoa," she breathed. "Was she a fool or what? How could she cheat on you? I an... is there even anyone better than you in bed?"
Aiden suppressed a smile at her innocent words. Sotis, she said the damndest things with such a straight face. These ones were definitely good to stroke his ego. Instead, he cleared his throat and answered, "It was probably the thrill of cheating or sothing. I don’t think it was about being better or worse."
"You seem to know a lot about the thrill of cheating," Serena narrowed her eyes at him and Aiden realized this conversation was probably a mine field rather than a trap. One wrong step... and boom.
"Also," he continued, his tone more serious now, "I don’t think I took the ti to ’please’ her the way I do with you. So, she may have found ... lacking in that departnt."
Serena stared at him, her lips twitching as though she was fighting a smile. "Lacking?" she echoed, her voice dripping with disbelief. "I find that hard to believe."
Aiden shrugged, trying to stay casual, though a small, self-satisfied smile played on his lips. She really was good for his vanity. "Guess she didn’t see it that way," he said. Then, leaning closer to Serena, he added in a lower tone, "But you do, don’t you?"
Serena’s cheeks flushed slightly, but she didn’t back down. Instead, she leaned closer, her eyes eting his with a playful glint. "Oh, I do," she whispered. "And I’d say I’m the lucky one in this story. Let’s go. I need to seal this deal imdiately."
Aiden laughed, his warm chuckle echoing through the cafeteria as Serena tugged him along. They were halfway out the door when he suddenly tried to stop her, pulling back on her hand. "Wait a second. What about your question? Don’t you want to know if I’m still in touch with my ex? I did et Kim..."
Serena turned, her grin mischievous as she tossed her hair over her shoulder. "I’ve decided I don’t care anymore," she declared with a playful shrug. Before he could press further, she pulled him along again, her enthusiasm contagious. "Co on, we’ve got places to be!"
Aiden couldn’t help but shake his head at her antics, a smile tugging at his lips as they left the cafeteria and made their way to their final destination.
Thankfully, they reached the cabin where she had ’planned’ everything for the perfect proposal without any more incidents.
Though as Aiden walked into the cabil walked further in, he couldn’t help but turn back to Serena after casting one last look at the single couch standing in the middle of the entire cabin. "Miss Dawn," he said, his voice tinged with mock disappointnt. "I have to say, I’m a little underwheld. I thought you’d go all out for this—candles, soft music, maybe so roses. Sothing romantic. But this? I don’t see a single candle or even a note of music.."
Serena rolled her eyes, her grin widening. "Romantic?" she scoffed, crossing her arms. "That’s not romantic. That’s cheesy. I don’t do cheesy, Hawk. Besides, I don’t need candles or music to set the mood." She moved towards the small fridge, pulling out a chilled bottle of water and holding it out to him. "Here, drink this. Hydrate first. Then I’ll put my plan into action."
Aiden looked at the bottle of water and drank it despite not being thirsty. However what happened next, he could not have imagined- that he would fall onto the couch, unconscious, in the next minute.
