Why had she never truly recognized before that Aiden Hawk was a pain in the a**? Or perhaps it was more accurate to say that she had been aware of it at so point, yet had conveniently forgotten about it. What was it about him that made her so willing to overlook his annoying traits?

Probably that charming smile he was always wearing with his ready to tease her answers. Now, however, that smile and that charming was nowhere to be seen.

As the guy expertly twirled her about the dance floor, careful to maintain a distance from Sidney so that he could not approach them nd ask for her, which did give her a perverse pleasure, but he insisted on giving her the cold shoulder or not even directly look at her, staring straight ahead as if she were invisible.

His hands, which rested on her waist, had already begun to spread possessively, a move that felt far too intimate for the casual dance they were supposed to be sharing. It was a stark contrast to the polite way his hands should have rested there, and her heart raced with a mix of annoyance and sothing else entirely. To top it off, his scent was wreaking havoc on her insides, an intoxicating blend that both thrilled and frustrated her in equal asure, reminding her of their ti together.

In fact, if she were a cat, she would have already been rubbing herself against him and purring.

"You do realize that we’ve been dancing together for almost two sets now. You can let go at any ti, you know? No one can say that you’re snubbing if you do," she said, trying to reclaim so of the control in this increasingly intimate situation.

"I’ll let you go when I want to, Serena. Unless you want to run away like the coward you are," Aiden replied, his tone steady and unapologetic.

Serena shot him a glare, her annoyance flaring up like a match igniting. "Coward? Really? Is that your best coback? You can do better than that."

"I don’t need a clever coback, Rena. It’s the truth. You were scared to step forward on your own and risk anything, so you raced back into your ex’s arms, wanting the security and safety he provides. Wasn’t it because you didn’t believe in yourself?"

Aiden looked down, gauging her reaction as Serena stiffened at his words. He hoped she would deny it vehently, but instead, she rely shrugged, her expression unreadable. "Sidney has always been my closest confidant. I don’t see the problem with relying on him. And Aiden, anyone who heard your words would think you’re just bitter over the past. But I can see you’ve already moved on. You should have at least waited for the divorce to go through and move on to another woman, before you started throwing stones at ."

Aidne shrugged, not the least bit bothered at her accusation as he expertly moved her once again, the move sohow ending up making them stand even closer as he said," I wasn’t the one who walked out. And if I didn’t know better, I would think you were jealous."

While Serena had no answer to that, she decided that it was better to keep her mouth shut. Jealous? She was seething with anger. She’d never thought that this man would move on so quickly or that she would be so jealous about it. Throughout the dance, her gaze had been fixed on Aiden instead of looking at the old man from Vancity or even her uncle who had given her a distant nod of acknowledgent.

Even now, she should walk away and work on wooing the investors so that she would be sure in her footing. Instead, here she was continuing to dance with this man because she feared if she didn’t, he would return to dancing with the other woman and perversely, she did not want that.

While Serena was lost in her own thoughts, Aiden was staring at a man standing not far away from them. The old man had been staring at her since a long ti. There was sothing in his gaze that put him on guard. He didn’t like this man. And then, he noticed another man approaching him.

Michael Dawn. Serena’s uncle and the current chairman of the company that Serena was set to inherit. There was sothing unsettling in the way these two seed to be communicating, a tension that put him on edge and made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. He was just about to ask Serena if she recognized the other man when, out of the corner of his eye, sothing caught his attention and sent a chill down his spine.

In an instant, he stiffened, his instincts screaming at him. Soone was definitely trying to shoot the old man. It had only been a brief mont, a flash of light that would have gone unnoticed by most, but he recognized it instantly: the unmistakable glint of a sniper rifle. The realization struck him like a punch to the gut. That ant there was a trained marksman sowhere behind him, possibly lying in wait outside, using the windows as a vantage point to line up the perfect shot.

But if he had the shot why did he not take it. Even as he calculated these things, a few overzealous dancing couples bumped into them, causing them to stumble and move away... now in direct line of the sniper’s rifle.

Just as the sharp sound of glass shattering echoed through the air, Aiden reacted instinctively. He covered Serena with his body, pulling her down toward the polished wooden floor and then before the others could react,he started to drag her away from the crowd into a secluded corner, making sure that it was not in direct line of any window.

By now, everyone seed to have realized what had happened as the bullet had lodged itself into the bar with a loud clang, creating panic and havoc.
