Last ti he tried to find Ning Ning but he couldn’t find her. He didn’t have to worry about her much because eventually, she ssaged him to tell him that she was okay.
"Mom, are you okay?" He helped her to sit down and gave her so tea. Shentu Mingye observed her. She seed to be in a dispirited mood.
Ning Ning was usually fussy about her appearance but now she arrived at his house in a disheveled state, Shentu Mingye was concerned deeply about her.
From outside, a hand was about to knock on the door when it froze midair upon hearing the familiar female voice. The eyes of a middle aged man flashed with a myriad of emotions.
"I’m okay. It’s just .... I’m a little tired. I ca to see how you were doing. Now that you are fine and living well, I can be at ease," she didn’t et her son’s gaze.
Shentu Mingye detected sothing wrong in her tone. Why did she sound like she got an incurable disease?
Watching her act like she was going to die and losing hope, Shentu Mingye dropped to his knees and clasped her hands.
"Mom, I know it wasn’t you. You didn’t have affairs with those n! I don’t believe it!" Shentu Mingye cried.
Ning Ning only looked at him wordlessly. Shentu Mingye was starting to get more anxious and worried.
"Mom, dad didn’t ant to hit you that day! It was because he was angry, that’s why he overreacted. I know, we all know that you have been very good to the Shentu family all these years. You have dedicated your life to the Shentu family. I believe the truth will co out and dad will know his wrongs," Shentu Mingye comforted her.
Finally Ning Ning looked up and facepald her son, her eyes seed to be red and watery.
"Mingye, my good boy. I’m not worried about that. I’m worried about you. In all these fighting and vengeance, what will happen to you?"
"Mom, what are you talking about?" Shentu Mingye was surprised. "What fighting? What vengeance? Who?"
"It’s nothing. It’s best if you don’t know anything at all. You’re right. I did wanted to protect the Shentu family. I’ve long seen this family as mine, but in the end, I couldn’t. You know I had a selfish desire when I stepped foot into the family. I wanted to atone for my guilt and take care of her child. It was killing , every night I heard her voices, begging and pleading to . I know that old master Shentu half raised him here because of account of being old friends, but still I ca here. I’m selfish. I’m selfish. I’m really selfish," her voice was filled with pain and boundless sorrow.
Shentu Mingye didn’t know what she was talking about. Why was his mother suddenly acting weird today?
Then she started sobbing bitterly. Her thin shoulders shook and she buried her face in her hands. Shentu Mingye patted her back, comforting her.
Outside the door, Shentu Dong squeezed his eyes shut and looked up at the ceiling.
"Mom, you’re not selfish. You’re not!"
"You don’t know , Mingye. I am selfish! I only think about myself and what I want! If I had thought about her, she wouldn’t have died," Tears stread down Ning Ning’s cheeks.
Shentu Mingye had never comforted a girl before so he was at lost on what to do.
"Mom, don’t think like that! Please! Mom, if you were selfish, you wouldn’t have sacrificed so much for the Shentu family. You wouldn’t have sacrificed so much for dad,"
When he ntioned Shentu Dong, Ning Ning went silent. The look in her eyes were one of despair, hopelessness and sorrow.
Shentu Mingye didn’t understand why his mother was like this.
"Mom...." He gently wiped her tears.
"My son, I lied to you. I’m sorry. No amount of words can atone for my sins," her lips quivered as she weakly gazed at him.
"What do you an? Mom, why do you keep on ntioning sins? You never committed any sins! Mom, why are you treating yourself like this? What happened? Mom, what happened!?" Shentu Mingye was starting to get impatient and angry.
What was happening? What exactly had happened? Did it had sothing to do with his father?
The reason why Shentu Chu purposely frad Ning Ning and got her kicked out of the Shentu family was because he wanted to teach her a lesson. A lesson for abandoning Qin Siyue in tis of trouble. But then he found out that Ning Ning was living with guilt in her heart, he decided to let her be.
It was better for her to live with that guilt for eternity, let her rember who was the person she owed. Let that guilt eat her up, haunt her and tornt her life forever! Let her know how wicked she was to discard her best friend and left her to die.
"You don’t understand. Mingye, it’s better if you stay away from these all.. What was I thinking, coming to you at this ti? I’m sorry, Mingye. I should get going," Ning Ning wiped her eyes and stood up, heading to the door.
The sky was very dark. Shentu Mingye rushed to hold her back.
"Mom, outside is dark. Please stay here. You can’t go out like this!"
Ning Ning ignored him and pulled the door open but Shentu Mingye held tightly onto his mom’s arm, pleading.
"Mom, what are you doing? Why have you beco like this? Who did this to you? You cannot go out at night! What if sothing happens to you?!"
Ning Ning pulled the door open nonetheless and jerked his hand off her arms, but she lost her footing and fell forward.
"Mom!" Shentu Mingye rushed to catch her.
Instead, Ning Ning felt into the arms of another person. Shentu Mingye froze, recognition in his eyes.
Ning Ning slowly looked up. D...did he heard everything?
