Alex trains with Gildarts almost every day until the S-Class exam day arrives. Makarov will finally announce the S-Class candidates today, so everyone cos to the Guild.
There are only 3 candidates this year and all of them are quite old, even older than Gildarts. Alex doesn't rember them appearing in the main story, so he assus they will retire before the main story starts.
Well, considering their age, it's not strange for them to retire in a few years, especially when they can't even beco S-Classes. Their careers have hit the limits, so it's better for them to retire before sothing dangerous happens to them.
The candidates leave the Guild with Makarov, Gildarts, and so Guild officers. They don't need to bring partners like when Natsu and the others do the exam.
The S-Class exam usually changes each year, after all. It's because so people can join the exam a few tis before they pass. So the Guild always changes the exam to make it fair for everyone, even the 1st ti participant.
It will take at least a few days for the exam to finish, so everyone can only do their usual activities while waiting.
Alex just takes so jobs in the town together with Cana because they aren't allowed to take jobs outside the town during the S-Class exam period.
As the youngest team, they need Makarov's approval to take jobs outside the town. Now with Makarov gone for a while, they can't get a permit to take those outside jobs, so they take jobs in the town.
2 days after the S-Class exam starts, sothing surprising happens. Well, at least it's surprising for Alex. Gray actually cos to Fairy Tail and wants to join the Guild.
"What the-? Gray?!" Alex is surprised to see Gray in the Guild when he returns from his job.
"Yo, Alex. It's been a long ti." The shirtless Gray greets Alex.
"OI! DON'T STRIP!" The Guild mbers shout at Gray as he tries to take off his pants too.
"Ah! Since when?!" Even Gray doesn't realize that he has stripped himself because he does it out of habit.
"What are you doing here? Where are the others?" Alex is not bothered by it because he is used to it.
"I ca here alone to join this Guild. Ur told and Lyon to join Fairy Tail because you are here. But Lyon refused to be in the sa Guild as and left to find another Guild. As for Ur and Ultear, it's better for you to read this letter."
Gray tries to take a letter out of his jacket, but he forgets that he has stripped himself, so he doesn't wear the jacket. He then picks his jacket that lies on the floor and takes the letter in one of its pockets before giving it to Alex.
"Alright, I'll read it in my room later. Pick your clothes and wait for . You can stay in my place for a few days because until Master returns, you can't join the Guild, so you can't rent any room in the dorm."
"I can find a place to stay myself, you know."
"Really? Do you have money?"
"...."
"I thought so."
Alex reports the job completion to the Guild staff with Cana who is curious about Gray's identity.
"Hey, Alex, who is he?"
"My fellow disciple. Though well, he is one of Ur's true disciples I guess. He and the others learn Ur's magic and everything else while I'm not. I couldn't learn Ur's Ice Magic, so I didn't learn as much as them from her. It doesn't change the fact that she is my teacher, but only Gray, Lyon, and Ultear can inherit Ur's magic."
"I see."
"Sorry about this Cana, but I'll go ho first to help that guy."
Alex wants to bring Gray back imdiately, but the stripping idiot's stomach suddenly grumbles. So Alex buys him so food and drinks while asking how he ca here.
Gray tells Alex that he was together with Lyon until they reach Fiore. But then they split because Lyon wanted to find another Guild. It was fine when he was with Lyon, but after they separated, Gray got into many troubles and lost almost all of his money.
Alex's face darkens hearing Gray's story. He can't believe this is the sa kid that sohow managed to get all the way to the Northern Continent just to chase Deliora not too long ago.
But now this sa kid sohow gets into many troubles just crossing so countries. Furthermore, he actually got so money from Ur for this trip while he didn't even bring money when he chased Deliora to another continent.
"I don't know if I should get impressed or concerned by how your brain works."
Anyway, Alex lets Gray stay in his room after getting the permission from the dorm keeper. After arriving in his room, Alex opens the letter from Ur.
In the letter, Ur explains that Ultear's magic power is starting to go out of control again. It's not as bad as before because Ultear has gotten stronger, but it still causes Ultear to get sick quite often.
For now, it only causes fever that will go down after so hours. But it becos more frequent and Ur is worried it will keep getting worse. So she wants to find a cure for it quickly.
Ur already found a clue to solve it. When Ultear's magic power was low after she used a lot of it, her magic power would stay stable for quite long, until it suddenly went berserk again.
She also could stabilize the out of control magic power by releasing a lot of her magic power. But because she needs to release so much of it, the spell she uses will be very strong.
When she tried it, she ended up freezing their house and its surrounding area. The ice even almost reached the town. Luckily, Ur could protect the kids and no one else was affected by it, so it didn't hurt anyone.
Ur realized that Ultear needs to strengthen her magic container so it can hold her massive amount of magic power properly. She also needs to keep using her magic power to keep her reserve low until then.
But Ur didn't know how to strengthen Ultear's magic container quickly. Then she heard that learning advanced or high-level types of magic can improve one's magic container quicker.
It's because advanced magic uses a lot of magic power even for its basic spells. The high magic power usage will temper their containers and strengthen it quickly to support the high magic power output.
There is also advanced magic that can affect the Mages' bodies directly, but this type of magic is rare. One of the examples is Dragon Slayer Magic that can affect its users' physique, giving them Dragon features.
Anyway, it's a hope for Ultear. So Ur takes her on a journey to find and learn advanced magic. But it won't be easy because advanced magic is a very valuable treasure and those who have it will keep it for themselves.
'Advanced Magic, huh? Hmm, the Arc of Ti that Ultear uses in the story must be more advanced than even Advanced Magic. It can even be categorized as a forbidden magic. But I won't let her learn that magic, it's too dangerous for her. Hmm, magic that can affect one's physique, huh? The Ice Devil Slayer Magic that Gray got in the series should be one such magic. But I don't know how to obtain it now.'
Alex racks his brain to find information about advanced magic in the series that he can obtain to help Ultear. But he has forgotten a lot of details and only rembered the rough outline of the story.
"Sigh, I guess I can only try to ask around. But the only ones that know about such a thing around are just Master and Gildarts. I can only wait for them to return before I can ask about this thing. Gray, did Ur tell you a way to contact her?"
"Yeah, she has a portable magic communication lacrima with her. Why? Do you need to call her?"
"Yeah, not now though, maybe tomorrow."
"Ah, alright." Gray looks for Ur's portable magic communication device number in his backpack, then he gives it to Alex.
Alex takes and copies it. He needs to call them tomorrow because he knows they need his encouragent, especially Ultear. Also, he needs to tell them that Gray has arrived in Fairy Tail and about Lyon's unknown destination.
