Not far from Varziel, general Thaluzar roared in triumph, as he crushed three enemies at once, beneath his massive hamr. His blue flas burned fiercely, leaving scorched trails in their wake. "They fall just like any demon!" He called out.

Varziel exhaled, taking in the battlefield. The tide of enemies had lessened, but the rift still remained open. More invaders were already erging, falling from the sky to the ground, their numbers threatening to overwhelm their defenses.

Varziel thought and thought as quickly as he could, his mind running a mile a minute, trying to figure out a way he could close the rift. A way that he could ensure that the intruders were blocked out of his kingdom.

However, no matter how he thought, he could not think of any solution.

"I need a closer look." he muttered as he struck down another enemy.

"General Nyssa, General Thaluzar, cover !" He called out to them just as he launched himself into the sky. His wings were spread wide, shadowy tendrils trailing behind him as he soared towards the rift.

Below, Velmoria shouted sothing, but he did not hear what she said, as he was focused on the rift.

The mont Varziel began his ascent, the air around him grew heavy. The closer he drew to the rift, the more unnatural the world around him beca. The sky itself seed to bend and warp, before his eyes. His instincts were screaming at him to fly back down, down to safety, back to what he already knew, but he ignored it. He needed to act, and to do so, he needed to understand what it is they were fighting.

However, the invaders would not allow him to reach the rift so easily. The higher he flew, the more figures flew after him, their bodies flickering in and out of nothingness, against the corrupted sky. Unlike the intruders who were on the ground, these ones glitched with those rectangular motes of light that he had gotten used to now, however, he did not harm them for them to glitch, which is what he found peculiar.

They hovered, around him as he flew, as if waiting for the right ti to strike.

Then, without warning, they attacked.

A spear of crackling energy hurtled towards him, the trajectory aiming straight for his chest. Varziel twisted just in ti, the weapon slicking through the air where he had been just monts before. Another enemy descended upon him faster, wielding a pair of jagged and translucent blades. They moved like a shadow, their body blinking in and out of his sight, before they appeared behind him too fast.

The shadows trailing behind Varziel, as if they had a mind of their own, whipped backward, catching the enemy across the chest and sending them spiraling away. He swung Vharlgrith, who was now a sword, and flas erupted from the tip of Vhalgrith, the flas burning another attacker in mid air.

The mont the flas touched them, they convulsed, and their bodies splintered into golden shards.

However, more ca.

One dived in from above, a massive blade in their hands. The edges of the blade shimred blue as it was brought down with force. Varziel raised Vhalgrith up in defense, and it turned into a spear just as the two weapons ca into contact.

The impact sent a shockwave tearing through the air. His arms trembled under the pressure, but he still managed to push back. This thing, whatever it was, was much stronger than the others.

Varziel snarled, and retaliated, slashing upward. Vhalgrith’s cut through the enemy’s body was clean, and for a mont, Varziel was sure he had won, just like with the others.

But then, the enemy reford.

Their body flickered, and just like the first few enemies he had fought, the wound shed itself back together in rectangular motes of light, and it was as if his attack had been absolutely useless. The attacker had a helted body. Their head tilted slightly, and then they vanished, only to reappear behind him.

Varziel realized it was a trap almost too late, as he spun just in ti, barely blocking as the enemy drove their weapon forward. The impact sent him hurtling backward, his wings beating furiously to keep him from falling.

These ones, seed, different from the ones that were on the ground. Those on the ground were like little scraps of paper, they had been killable and fell with just but a strike of his sword. These enemies, however, were much stronger, much like the ones that had attacked him in his office.

He raised Valgrith high, the flas on the tip of its blade roaring to life. With a single swift motion, he unleashed a wave of fire that expanded outward in all directions. The sky darkened as his attack consud everything that was in its path, reaching toward the invaders that dared stand between him and the rift.

However, just before the fire could touch them, all of them vanished.

The flas continued into empty air, before dissipating into the sky.

"What the fuck." Varziel cursed.

He turned at a whisper of movent behind him. However, he turned too late. A sharp pain lanced through his shoulder as a weapon pierced him armor, embedding itself deep. A burning sensation spread through his body and for just a second, he lost control over his demonic powers.

Varziel twisted violently, tearing himself free before the blade could go any deeper. Blood seeped from his wound, but not as much as it should have. Sothing felt different.

The enemy who had struck him hovered just a short distance away, and it was as if they were regarding him, behind the helt. The golden text flickered above them, too fast to read. lting over each other, before disappearing, then reappearing, over and over again.

Varziel grit his teeth, forcing himself to ignore the pain. However, he felt lightheaded, as if his energy was being sucked out of him.

No, it was not as if his energy was being sucked out of him. His energy **was** being sucked out of him. He pressed onto his wound, gripping tightly on Vhalgrith, waiting for the enemy to attack, but instead, they glitched, before disappearing again.

Varziel flapped his wings, looming closer to the rift, its swirling mass of unstable energy warping the very air around it. There was a slight chill in the air as well, and he could feel it, the different type of magic. It felt like it was choking him, and it was what was keeping the hole open.

It was a portal, but at the sa ti, it was nothing like a portal.

He raised Vhalgrith, and struck the rift with his sword.

Vhalgrith sunk into the rift, and the instantaneous impact caused the entire realm to shake. A deafening roar erupted from the rift, and for a single glorious mont, Varziel thought that he had succeeded, was sure that he had won. However, the swirling mass of energy shuddered, as its form rippled outward like a glass shattered.

Then, the resistance vanished.

Vhalgrith passed through the rift, as if striking nothing at all. Varziel’s eyes widened in alarm.

No, the rift had not closed. It had pulsed.

A deep hum reverberated through the sky, shaking him as the air ripped violently and the rift expanded.

Varziel felt sothing strike him in the chest, without form, and without shape. It crashed into him, sending him hurtling backward. The wind scread past him as he plumted, struggling to regain control of his wings.

The ground seed to be rushing up to et him

With a final, desperate, last ditch effort, Varziel spread his wings, managing to slow his descent just enough before he hit. Even so, the impact sent a shockwave through the palace, cracking the earth beneath him. Dust and debris erupted around him as he landed hard, as one knee slamd into the stone.

For just a mont, the world was a blur, and his breath was ragged, and his shoulder burning from the would he had gotten from the enemy. However, none of that mattered, as he sunk Vhalgrith into the ground, forcing himself up. His ears were ringing, but he ignored that as well.

The battlefield has stilled.

The demons around him, the warriors he had dispatched, looked up at the sky, their faces frozen in expressions of horror.

Varziel turned his gaze to the sky, looking at the rift that was still there. It was bigger than before, and a cold dread settled over him. His efforts had proved to be futile, and not only had he failed to destroy it, he had also made it worse.

More enemies were pouring out now, twice as many as before. Their weapons shimred with that similar blue glow, so with the normal weapons he had gotten used to seeing, while others wielded weapons that Varziel had never seen before.

Above them all, hovering near the mouth of the rift, was sothing else. Varziel could not see it clearly, but he could see the energy that the figure emitted. It was a deep shade of blue that was so dark it seed purple.

Although the figure was much smaller than the humongous rift, the power it emitted, was bigger than anyone who was on the battlefield.

Varziel was sure that they would have answers to the questions that he had. He waited for the figure to attack, it did not move, it simply watched.
