Lilith watched Ren as he slept, his head resting comfortably on her lap as the carriage rolled smoothly along the cobblestone roads.

She wondered just how he was able to sleep, because even with the gentle sway of the carriage, she didn’t know if she’d have been able to. But that didn’t seem to bother him.

She knew why though. Even with his breathing slow and even, she could see the exhaustion written plainly on his face.

She smiled to herself as she traced her fingers lightly through his brown hair, cooing softly.

"So handso even when you’re tired." She murmured to herself, her fingers brushing against his cheek.

Most wouldn’t have, but she’d noticed it easily. Throughout the past few days, Ren had been always distracted.

Not that he was completely absent from their conversations, but he was distant, as if part of his mind was always elsewhere.

He still smiled, still teased her in the way she loved, but his attention felt divided. And Lilith did not like anything dividing Ren’s attention away from her.

She tilted her head slightly, contemplating. What could possibly be keeping him distracted?

She humd as she tried to think of all the possibilities. It wasn’t her, she knew she still had his affection.

It wasn’t his family, he hadn’t received any troubling ssages from them.

It wasn’t the tournant, because while that was important, Ren had never been the type to stress over a fight. So what was it?

Her fingers stilled against his temple as she made her decision. Whatever it is, I’ll find out. And I’ll remove it. Their ti together was being affected, and that simply would not do.

After a few hours, Ren stirred, blinking blearily before shifting slightly to look up at her. "Where are we?"

Lilith smiled down at him. "We’ve just exited the Rosefield territory. You were out for quite a while."

"Good riddance." Ren sighed, rubbing his eyes as he sat up. "Feels like I barely slept."

"That’s because you’ve been exhausted lately." Lilith pointed out, brushing non-existent lint off his shoulder. She forced herself to stay casual. Maybe he’ll spill the reason if she just asked. "You’re not usually like this. What’s keeping you so distracted?"

Ren rolled his shoulders, loosening the tension in his muscles. "I guess I’ve just had a lot on my mind. The whole politics thing I’ll have to face in Steadfast. I’m not really built for that and I have to prepare. There’s a lot to keep track of."

Lilith studied his face. His answer was logical, reasonable, but sothing told her that wasn’t the whole truth. He was being careful with his words, choosing them deliberately.

Avoiding sothing?

She decided to prod gently. "You know you can talk to about anything, right? I can help."

Ren smirked, leaning his head back against the cushioned seat. "Of course, I know that. Just... so things I need to work through myself first."

Lilith kept her smile, but sothing about his response made her grip her dress a little tighter. Still hiding sothing.

She let it go, allowing the topic to die a natural death as the conversation continued.

There was no need to push further. If Ren wasn’t going to tell her willingly, then she’d find out on her own.

That night, after the caravan had stopped, supper had been had, and everyone had already been sleeping in their rooms for a few hours at the inn, Lilith sat on her bed, staring at the ceiling.

Her fingers tapped rhythmically against the mattress as she thought. Ren was distracted. She needed to know why.

Well, there was only one way to find out.

Slipping out of bed, she padded barefoot across the wooden floor, her movents silent.

If Ren slept during the day, that ant he was being kept awake by sothing at night. So, it was only logical that there would be evidence in his room.

If she could just take a quick look in his room, she could know for sure.

She quietly opened her door and stepped into the dark hallway, making her way toward Ren’s room.

Then, soone cleared their throat behind her.

Lilith froze and spun around.

Elias stood leaning against the wall, arms crossed, watching her with a blank expression on his face.

"Going sowhere?" He asked, his voice low so as not to wake anyone else.

Lilith straightened, tilting her chin up. "To Ren’s room."

Elias sighed tiredly. "Lilith, it’s late. You should go back to sleep."

She gave him an unimpressed look. "I’ll sleep after I check sothing."

He didn’t move. "You’re sneaking into his room. Why?"

Lilith narrowed her eyes. "That’s none of your business."

Elias let out another sigh, running a hand through his hair. "But it’s Ren’s business. Listen Lilith, if Ren finds out you went through his things, do you really think he’ll be happy?"

She frowned, crossing her arms. "I wouldn’t be doing anything wrong. I just want to know why he’s been so distracted."

Elias studied her for a long mont before shaking his head. "And you don’t think he’d tell you if he wanted to?"

Lilith pressed her lips together, her fingers curling into her sleeves. "It’s affecting our ti together. I have to know."

Elias pushed off the wall and took a slow step forward. "Lilith, I’ve followed you for years. I know how you think. But trust when I say this."

"Ren values his privacy. If you do this, and he finds out, it will change sothing between you. Maybe not imdiately. But it will."

Would it change sothing between them? Would he hate her for it?

Lilith stared at him, conflicted.

Then, she sighed, turning back toward her own room. "Fine."

Elias nodded approvingly, watching as she slipped back inside. Once the door shut, he stood there for a few more seconds before heading back to his own room.

Inside her room, Lilith sat on her bed, her fingers gripping the sheets tightly.

Elias made a good point. But…

She refused to let this go.

Ren was hers, and anything that took his focus away from her was a problem. If she couldn’t find out tonight, she would another ti. Maybe when Elias wasn’t watching.

She smiled to herself, brushing her hair back as she lay down.

I just need to make sure Ren never finds out. What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.
