The morning sun had barely crested the horizon when the academy gates ca into view.

Tall, silverlike spires glimred above a sea of green, banners unfurling in the soft wind, their colors deep and familiar. The scent of dew clung to the air, and the faint echo of distant chatter rippled across the cobblestone path.

rlin paused a few paces before the gates. For a long mont, he just stood there, staring at the place that had beco both haven and cage.

A week away had felt like a lifeti.

Invoke Tower. Kael’s words. Damien’s warning.

The city’s rhythm still pulsed behind his eyes, numbers and ledgers dancing in half-mory. He could still hear the faint hum of the boardroom walls, still see the silver glint of the capsule tucked safely in his jacket pocket.

But here, none of that existed.

Here, he was just rlin Everhart, a first-year turned second-year, another student in a world that never knew it was once a story.

He exhaled and stepped forward.

The guards nodded him through, their mana seals flickering briefly in acknowledgnt. The massive gates parted with a low rumble, revealing the main courtyard. Students spilled across the open space, their laughter and excitent washing over the morning like a tide.

New uniforms. New faces. Familiar noise.

"—rlin!"

The shout ca from across the fountain.

Nathan waved wildly, his grin bright enough to sha the sun. Behind him, Adrian was trying and failing to juggle a stack of books, while Elara leaned lazily against a pillar, arms crossed, violet eyes watching with quiet amusent.

rlin blinked once, then let a small smile tug at his mouth. "You’re early."

Nathan smirked. "You’re late."

"I’m on ti."

"That’s what people say when they’re late."

Adrian grunted, dropping a book on his foot. "Can you two stop arguing before classes even start again?"

Elara’s lips curved faintly. "You’re both wrong. I was here before sunrise."

rlin glanced at her. "You didn’t need to wait."

She t his gaze steadily. "I did."

The words landed quietly between them, soft, simple, but carrying more weight than anyone else seed to notice. Nathan was too busy laughing, Adrian too busy cursing under his breath as he picked up his books.

rlin only gave a small nod in return, a silent understanding passing through the air like an unseen current.

The group fell into easy rhythm as they walked toward the main building. Nathan talked, as always, about the break, about new gear he’d bought and old ones he’d broken. Adrian chid in about a new book series he’d devoured.

rlin listened more than he spoke, but that was normal. His attention lingered on everything around them, the courtyard, the banners, the faint scent of mana-infused ink that always filled the academy halls.

When they passed the notice board, Nathan stopped abruptly.

"Oh, hell. They’ve already posted the new rankings."

Adrian groaned. "We just got back."

"Curiosity kills, brother," Nathan said, scanning the long parchnt list. His finger ran down the columns. "Let’s see... at twelfth, not bad. Adrian, you’re—uh, well—sixteenth."

"Figures," Adrian muttered. "And rlin... well, you’re—"

Nathan paused. "Wait. They didn’t list you."

rlin blinked once. "Didn’t list ?"

"Yeah. Look — it skips from Rank 1 placeholder to Rank 2, Elara, then straight to ."

Elara’s gaze flicked to him, one brow raised. "They’re holding your spot."

"Or they lost my record," rlin said dryly.

Nathan snorted. "Yeah, sure, because that’s so likely for the guy who blew up the combat exams last term."

rlin didn’t respond. He didn’t need to. He already knew what it ant, Vivienne, or perhaps Morgana, keeping him off the record until they could assess him again. His power, his strange return, his unknown limits... it made sense.

Still, it left an odd taste in his mouth.

They continued walking until the bell tower rang, a low lodic tone that resonated through the grounds. The first assembly of the year.

Inside, the main auditorium was packed. Hundreds of students filled the seats, from wide-eyed first-years to second-years now taller, sharper, harder. The stage glead under the light, where the teachers stood in formation.

Vivienne stood near the center, crimson hair bound high, her usual confidence radiating like heat. To her left, Headmistress Morgana, quiet, composed, a soft smile on her lips that carried both welco and warning.

When the hum of chatter died, Morgana stepped forward.

"Welco back," she began. Her voice carried easily, smooth as silk yet strong enough to cut through the crowd. "Another year begins. Another chance to learn, and to fail. Both are necessary."

Her gaze swept across the hall. It lingered briefly, just briefly, on rlin.

"You are not the sa as when you arrived," she continued. "You have seen what power can do. You have seen where it leads. This year, you will learn to control it , or it will control you."

Her words hung heavy.

Then, softer: "Let the second year begin."

Applause rippled through the room.

Vivienne followed, outlining schedules, new divisions, and upcoming inter-academy tournants. She looked at rlin once, briefly, before continuing as if nothing had passed between them.

By the ti the assembly ended, the sun was already high. Students poured out into the courtyards, buzzing with excitent about new ntors and classes.

Nathan grinned. "Guess we’re back to hell."

"Back to structure," Adrian corrected. "There’s a difference."

"Sure," Nathan said. "In one you die slower."

Elara looked between them, unamused. "You two should really stop talking before Morgana hears."

"I’m pretty sure she hears everything," Nathan whispered.

"Correct," a voice said behind him.

Nathan froze. Morgana stood directly behind him, her smile light, her eyes glinting. "Try to stay alive this term, Mr. Voss."

Nathan swallowed. "Y-yes, Headmistress."

She turned her gaze to rlin. "Mr. Everhart. A word."

The others went silent. rlin only nodded.

She motioned with a tilt of her head, and he followed her through the crowd, up a side stairwell to one of the upper balconies overlooking the campus. The rain clouds from yesterday had cleared, leaving a glasslike blue sky.

For a while, Morgana said nothing. She simply leaned against the railing, her golden eyes reflecting the sunlight.

"You’ve changed," she said finally.

rlin looked out across the courtyard. "Everyone changes."

"Not like that." Her tone was soft, but knowing. "Your aura hums differently. Controlled. Tempered. As if you’ve seen too much too soon."

He didn’t answer. He couldn’t. Because she wasn’t wrong.

Morgana smiled faintly. "You don’t have to explain. I only called you up here to tell you this, the world will not stop testing you. Inside or outside this academy. The mont you begin to think you’ve reached safety, that’s when it strikes hardest."

He glanced at her. "You sound like soone who’s speaking from experience."

"I am."

A brief pause.

Then, her voice softened further. "Be careful who you trust, rlin Everhart. The higher you climb, the fewer hands will catch you when you fall."
