Chapter 575: Chapter 573 Surveillance Operation
Jungle Hut, Dark Forest Gathering Place.
Mars, as a Second Level Wizard Apprentice, was slowly making his way down the path of the gathering place, chewing on dried fish and taking his steps slowly, trying his best not to attract any attention. His eyes would occasionally dart in one direction, then quickly look away. If one didn’t observe closely, it was impossible to tell that there was anything odd about him, and Mars thought the sa.
However, Mars still occasionally felt a rush of fear, unable to help but think: “What if I’m discovered? Could I be killed on the spot? That shouldn’t happen, right? This is the gathering place, and it’s dayti. Surely, other wizards would intervene if it ca to that.”
But what if the wizards didn’t intervene in ti?
Mars nervously swallowed the fish in his mouth and was about to turn a corner when suddenly he heard a squeak and saw from the corner of his eye: a person walking out of a rickety three-story wooden building on the side, heading straight out of the gathering place.
Mars’s first reaction was to quickly turn his head away, facing away from the person, fearing that his expression might give him away. He touched his chest with his hand and felt his heart beating uncontrollably, pounding so hard it almost burst out of his throat.
“Phew—”
“Phew—”
Mars took a deep breath and tried to reassure himself: Nothing to worry about, the person definitely hadn’t noticed him, and even if they had, they wouldn’t dare do anything to him.
After a while, Mars cald down. Slowly, he twisted his head back and peeked over his shoulder, only to see his surveillance target had already gone hundreds of ters away, almost disappearing from his sight. It seed the person had not noticed him at all, and he finally felt reassured.
“I knew it, I couldn’t possibly be discovered,” Mars thought, swallowing his saliva and quietly followed behind his target, leaving the gathering place.
After leaving the gathering place, Mars noticed the person accelerating, continuously moving deeper into the forest, getting faster and faster, leaving him farther and farther behind, nearly losing sight of them.
In a panic, Mars stopped in his tracks, his lips moving as he began to chant a spell.
But because he was too anxious, he failed to control the flow of mana within his body, causing the two streams of mana to collide, shaking his body and causing a surge of blood in his veins—a backlash from the failed spell.
“Damn it!”
Mars cursed in a strained voice, seeing the target becoming just a speck in the distance. Not wanting to waste ti recuperating, he desperately cast the spell again.
This ti, he concentrated fully, using all of his strength, and finally succeeded.
The air around slowly gathered, enveloping him, lightening his body and noticeably increasing his speed as he quickly pursued the target he was about to lose.
“Tap tap tap…”
“Tap tap tap…”
Mars kept up, casting spells several tis to maintain high speed, feeling the mana drain completely from his body. Exhausted and thirsty, he ate all the fish he had with him and finally saw the target slow down, stopping by a small river in the forest.
Mars was puzzled, unable to understand why the person had co here.
To get water?
What a joke!
Using magic to gather water directly from the air would be more efficient, wouldn’t it?
Catching fish?
That didn’t seem likely either.
There was a stream not far from the gathering place, plentiful with fish that were also tastier. Compared to that, the fish in this river were much worse, with an ineradicable earthy taste. After trying only three tis, he had given up.
So, what exactly did they want to do?
Mars thought more and more but didn’t dare to ask the other party, so he quietly found a hidden corner to squat down and carefully observe the other party’s actions.
Then he saw the other person standing on the riverbank, waving continuously. The sand on the riverbank seed to be lifted by an invisible hand, flew into the air, and dropped into the bucket he was holding. Soon, the bucket was full.
“Is this… for collecting sand?” Mars beca even more confused. What was the sand for?
While he was puzzled, Mars saw the target carrying the bucket of sand begin to turn around, and he swept over toward his location, intentionally or unintentionally.
Mars was startled. In the next mont, he threw himself to the ground, trying to prevent the other person from seeing him.
But as he was about to get down, his eyes widened in shock when he saw, right in front of his face on the ground, a blackish, slightly hardened, slightly dried cylindrical object lying there.
That was wild animal feces!
Feces!
“I…” The curse didn’t co out of Mars’s mouth, as he didn’t have ti to change his position. With a “plop,” his face pressed right onto it, only feeling an indescribable sour, stinky sll spreading through his nostrils, almost making him pass out.
However, he was still aware of his surroundings, knew that the target was watching his position, and had to grit his teeth and remain motionless.
It was a long while before, feeling that his entire nose was stung by the sll, Mars slowly got up, looked around, and noticed that the target had long disappeared. He imdiately spat several tis to clear the filth from his face.
After cleaning up, Mars looked at the remaining animal feces on the ground, feeling both angry and annoyed, really wanting to kick the other person.
But just as he lifted his leg, looking at his boots that he had just replaced a few days ago, then at the severely deford feces, he reluctantly pulled back.
He was destined not to vent his anger on a pile of feces because no matter the outco, the loser would be him. From a certain perspective, feces are invincible.
“Damn it!” Mars cursed under his breath, helplessly turned around, and returned to the gathering place.
…
Dark Forest Gathering Place.
A two-story wooden building.
Mars walked in, looked at the silhouette inside the wooden building, and said, “Teacher, I’m back.”
“How did it go? Did you find anything?” Wizard Wan An quickly ca over, looked at Mars, and asked.
Mars answered truthfully, “I followed that guy to a river far outside the gathering place and watched him dig sand and bring it back.”
“Digging sand?” Wan An was stunned, “What for? To make sand paintings? Sand sculptures?” He really couldn’t figure out a reasonable use for sand. Even if so potions or magic required so materials as auxiliary, he had never seen sand being used.
Mars shook his head strongly, “I don’t know.”
“Well—” Wan An hesitated for a mont, looking at Mars, “Well, anyway, this is valid information. Now you…”
“Uh?” Halfway through speaking, Wan An suddenly made a strange face, sniffed hard, and looked at Mars, asking, “What’s that sll on you?”
“It might be… the sll of the forest outside.”
“It really stinks.” Wan An waved his hand disapprovingly, “Alright, go out and keep an eye on him, and report back to if there’s anything, okay?”
“Uh, yes.” Mars took two packets of dried fish from the wooden building, stuffed them inside his jacket, and walked out the door.
After he left, Wan An sniffed hard, muttered to himself doubtfully, “Does it really stink?” He couldn’t sll anything now.
