Chapter 691: The atmosphere beca strange. Chapter 691: The atmosphere beca strange. New York Airport.

When Du Wei arrived in the lobby with Ryan, Tom and Father Tony imdiately spotted them and stood up to greet them.

Tom, dressed in uniform and with a cigarette in his mouth, gave Du Wei a once-over.

Du Wei wore a trench coat that seed slightly thin and, unusually, had put on sunglasses, his deanor cold and detached as if repelling people from a thousand miles away.

This was not his usual style.

Ryan, on the other hand, was dressed in a suit and looked every bit the part of a successful businessman, that is… as long as he didn’t speak.

Father Tony also noticed the change in Du Wei.

...

He asked curiously, “Mr. Du Wei, why are you wearing sunglasses? Are you trying to change your style?”

Tom frowned secretly, feeling that sothing was not quite right.

As a police officer, even though Tom spent half his ti hanging around the Red Light District, he had graduated from the police academy and his professional instincts told him that things were not so simple.

Sure enough.

Du Wei removed his sunglasses, revealing eyes bloodshot as if from nights of sleeplessness, yet his gaze held an inexplicable and chilling aloofness.

It was enough to send a shiver down anyone’s spine upon seeing it.

With a sense of helplessness, he said, “As you can see, my eyes were injured. I can only wear sunglasses to cover it up for now.”

In order to kill Rahr, he had destroyed his own eyes.

Although he now used the eyes of the shadow as a substitute, they were not as good as the original ones.

Moreover, if he ever sent the shadow out, then he would lose his vision.

In other words, those cold and calm eyes might never be seen again.

Father Tony didn’t realize the severity of the situation and nodded, saying absentmindedly, “It’s good that you’re alright. Get so rest when you can, and your eyes should recover.”

Tom was sowhat puzzled, but since Du Wei made it clear he did not wish to elaborate, it was not Tom’s place to ask in front of everyone.

So, he just shrugged, reached out with a cigarette, and offered, “Anyway, welco back, brother.”

“Thank you.” Du Wei took the cigarette and lit it for himself.

Then, he said to Ryan, “They are Tom and Father Tony. I’ve introduced them to you on the plane. If you ever need anything, you can talk to them.”

Ryan glanced at Tom and Father Tony.

He hadn’t been keen on getting involved with these two, as he was of noble birth, but seeing Tom in a police uniform and Father Tony in his clerical attire, he figured one was connected to the governnt and the other to religion.

Getting on their good side certainly wouldn’t be a bad thing.

After a mont’s consideration, he extended his hand and said, “Hello, I’m Ryan, a mber of the nobility. You may refer to as Baron Ryan.”

The title, at least, seed quite convincing.

At the very least, his tone sounded entirely normal.

Tom and Father Tony took him at his word, both taken aback.

What was happening?

A baron?

Wasn’t this Ryan the person who disappeared from Hill Psychiatric Hospital?

He’s a baron?

Really?

Tom shook Ryan’s hand in a perfunctory manner: “Nice to et you, Ryan, but… are you truly a baron? Aren’t you a patient from the psychiatric hospital?”

Ryan scoffed dismissively: “A psychiatric patient? Impossible. You are insulting a mber of the nobility. I am a duly conferred nobleman; I used to have my own lands, which have now been wrongfully demolished. Otherwise, you’d all have to kneel when eting !”

Tom looked at Du Wei with a puzzled expression.

Du Wei was extrely embarrassed.

He definitely didn’t want Tom and Father Tony to treat Ryan like he was ntally ill.

That wouldn’t be good for Ryan.

Sotis, people with ntal problems can be easily affected by external influences, a look or a tone of voice can hurt them.

So, he said earnestly, “Just listen to whatever he says, but treat him like a normal person and don’t take it too seriously.”

Tom trusted Du Wei a lot, so he awkwardly said to Ryan, “I’m sorry, Ryan, I misunderstood you.”

As he spoke, he tried to withdraw his hand.

But Ryan had no such concept and, holding onto Tom’s hand, he humd arrogantly, “You’re lucky you’re smart, kid. Otherwise, you couldn’t bear the wrath of Baron Ryan. One phone call, and I could bankrupt you in minutes.”

A shock went through Tom’s heart, this Ryan was actually soone powerful and influential?

Then the welco ceremony tonight might need to be upgraded.

He just wasn’t sure if nobles liked the Red Light District?

He guessed they probably didn’t, right?

After all, that place was too low.

It was at this mont that Ryan finally let go of his hand and, nodding at a puzzled Father Tony, said, “I think highly of you, Father. Do your job well, and there will surely be dealings between us in the future, hmm… I think highly of you.”

Surprised, Father Tony asked, “Baron Ryan… No, Mr. Ryan, what do you an? What kind of dealings would we have?”

Du Wei was also puzzled and bewildered.

Ryan’s worldview and the common man’s were at odds, and even he found it hard to follow Ryan’s train of thought.

Of course…

Ryan himself was also puzzled.

He thought to himself, “Yeah, what dealings would I have with him? What was I trying to say just now?”

“Oh, I rember now. After all, I used to be an emperor. Once I reestablish my territory and found the lands of His Majesty Ryan, I’ll definitely need a religion to play divine right of kings.”

“Since Father Tony is also mixed up in religion, I might as well have him crown . That way, my position as emperor will be unshakable.”

Ryan’s train of thought was quite unique.

He even knew about the concept of divine right of kings, though it was unclear where he got that from.

However, the idea of having Father Tony, a logistics officer, crown him, was that not a bit too fantastical?

Ryan looked at Father Tony with a cheery smile, “Once I reestablish my territory, you’ll find out what dealings we’ll have. Don’t worry, you and Tom are friends of the chief, and that makes you friends of Baron Ryan. I will certainly not let you suffer any loss.”

At this very mont.

Ryan looked at Tom and Father Tony as if they were future ministers in his kingdom.

Well…

Tom the policeman would then be the National General.

And Father Tony? That was simple, the future pope who would crown Ryan.

In Ryan’s eyes, these two already held lofty positions.

Tom and Father Tony felt sowhat uncomfortable under Ryan’s gaze.

They always felt that this Ryan didn’t quite seem like a noble, but instead had an indescribable strangeness about him.

anwhile.

Du Wei shook his head and said softly, “Let’s head back first.”

Tom followed up imdiately, “Let’s go. Today Father Tony and I are treating you. We’ll have a welco dinner for you at New York’s best restaurant. After we eat, we’ll go to a high-end club tonight, and I’ll show you the warmth of the people of New York.”
