Chapter 26: I have a task for Aya

The mont that spotted feline head erged, thinking the danger had passed, thinking it could now launch its own counterattack, Renji was already moving. His sword was already in motion, cutting through the air in a perfect arc that he’d visualized in his mind during those crucial split seconds while the beast was retracted. The blade connected with the creature’s neck with a solid, satisfying impact that sent vibrations up through his arms.

And unlike his previous attempts that had bounced harmlessly off the shell or swung through empty air, this ti Renji’s strike was perfect. The angle was right, the timing was right, the force was right. His sword cut through flesh and bone and cartilage in one clean, sweeping motion, severing the leopard head from the tortoise body completely.

The head flew through the air, tumbling end over end, those golden eyes still wide with surprise that it had been fooled so completely. It landed several feet away with a heavy thump, rolling once before coming to rest against a tree root.

The massive body swayed for a mont, blood fountaining from the stump of its neck, before it collapsed sideways with a crash that shook the ground beneath Renji’s feet.

He stood there for a mont, chest heaving with exertion and adrenaline, staring at what he’d accomplished. Then, almost against his will, he found himself trying to console himself with a small victory, a tiny piece of pride he could hold onto.

At least he had managed to take its head off in one sweep, he thought to himself. At least he hadn’t needed multiple strikes like the girls had, hadn’t needed to hack away repeatedly at the tough hide. That was sothing, wasn’t it? That proved sothing about his skill, his precision, his combat ability.

But even as he tried to convince himself of this small triumph, even as he attempted to find comfort in this minor superiority, he knew deep in his gut that it was a sad win at best. The truth was impossible to ignore or rationalize away, Aya and Kaede had proven to be significantly more efficient than him in killing the beasts overall. They’d taken down three monsters to his one. They’d worked together flawlessly while he’d struggled alone. They’d made it look easy while he’d nearly been dissolved by acid.

The fact that he could decapitate in one strike while they needed several was a technicality, a small consolation prize that didn’t change the fundantal reality of their superior performance in this fight.????????????????????????????????

By evening, the forest had grown dim around them, the sunlight that had filtered through the canopy now fading into the soft purple and orange hues of approaching dusk. They had killed many more beasts throughout the long day of hunting, and exhaustion was settling into their bones like a physical weight. Their clothes were torn in places, stained with blood both theirs and not, and their muscles ached from hours of continuous combat.

Renji took a mont to check his status, pulling up the familiar system interface in his mind. His eyes scanned the information, looking for the progress on his secret quest. When he found it, his expression fell with disappointnt.

[Secret Quest: Kill 10 Giant Monsters]

[Current Progress: 6/10]

He had only killed two giant beasts today. Just two. Which ant his total had only increased from four to six. He sighed heavily, the sound carrying all of his frustration and unt expectations. He had genuinely expected more from today’s hunting expedition.

However, when they gathered together to check their collected beast crystals, the haul was actually quite impressive. The small pile of glittering crystals they’d accumulated throughout the day was substantial, far more than Renji had anticipated. The sight of all that potential wealth and resources consoled him sowhat, taking the edge off his disappointnt about the quest progress.

They packed as much beast at as they could reasonably carry back with them, wrapping the choicest cuts in leaves and securing them for transport. No sense letting good at go to waste when they had hungry mouths to feed. Then, weary but satisfied with their day’s work, they began the journey ho through the darkening forest.

When they finally erged from the tree line and approached the shrine, Renji noticed imdiately that Rei was waiting for them at the front of the building. The petite priestess stood there with her arms crossed, her pale features illuminated by the last light of the setting sun, watching their approach with an expression that was carefully neutral but couldn’t quite hide sothing else beneath the surface.

Renji couldn’t resist the opportunity to tease her. A smirk spread across his face as he called out, "What’s this? Waiting at the door for us?" He tilted his head with exaggerated curiosity, his tone dripping with playful mockery. "Did you miss us that badly, priestess?"

The effect was imdiate and deeply satisfying. Rei’s cheeks flad bright red, the blush spreading across her pale skin like wildfire. Her carefully maintained composure cracked completely, and she turned on her heel without a word, hurrying back into the shrine as if fleeing from his words. "Kaede, Aya," she called over her shoulder, her voice slightly higher than usual, "bring the at and join

in the kitchen to cook."

Renji clutched his chest in mock offense, his expression one of theatrical hurt. "I’m offended!" he declared loudly, making sure Rei could hear him even as she retreated. "Why didn’t you invite

to help cook? Am I not worthy of participating in al preparation?"

Kaede paused, shifting the bundle of at she was carrying, and fixed him with a knowing look. One blonde eyebrow arched skeptically. "Would you have actually participated if she had invited you?" she asked, her tone making it clear she already knew the answer.

Renji’s grin widened, completely unrepentant. "No," he admitted cheerfully, not even attempting to pretend otherwise.

All three girls scoffed at him in near-perfect unison, a sound of exasperated amusent that had beco increasingly familiar over their ti together. They turned to leave, heading toward the kitchen area to begin preparing the evening al.

However, before they could get far, Renji’s voice stopped them. "Aya," he called out, and sothing in his tone made all three won pause. "I have a task for you."

The cheeky smile spreading across his face left absolutely no ambiguity about what kind of task he was referring to.

Aya’s reaction was imdiate, her cheeks flushed a deep crimson, her dark eyes widening slightly as understanding dawned. Rei, who had paused at the doorway, also blushed fiercely, her pale skin betraying her embarrassnt even as she tried to look anywhere but at Renji.

Kaede, anwhile, simply rolled her eyes tiredly
