Chapter 461

As Jake made his way through Dead City, searching either for a subway entrance or a building cleared of Ravage Contamination, a sudden thought ca to mind. The System rewarded him with far more XP for defeating ravagespawn here than it ever did in New Hope. He had already deduced that this was likely because the contamination in Dead City had reached its final stage of developnt.

So he couldn’t help but wonder if he could benefit from it further. The ravagespawn in New Hope were underdeveloped and yielded no useful resources for him to extract. But what about the ravagespawn in Dead City? Being fully developed, perhaps they could yield valuable genetic materials. They granted quite a lot of XP when defeated, so perhaps it was the sa for resources. It was definitely worth finding out.

Eventually, he ca across a towering high-rise the Spartans had purged of Ravage Contamination. Once a nesting ground abundantly covered in layers of organic matter, it was now just an empty carcass of a building, consisting of nothing but bare columns, beams, and girders. It no longer had walls or a roof and looked as though it was still in the midst of construction rather than having been completed long ago.

Sure enough, just like the Commander had said, the building, or what was left of it, was completely free of the Ravage Contamination. The imdiate area around the structure was also devoid of the creeping bio-plague, and it didn’t seem eager to reclaim the lost area.

Jake turned and dealt with a small group of ravagespawn that had been following him, then entered the first floor of the structure. He looked around, noticing nothing of interest. There was absolutely nothing worth having, no supplies, no valuables. The place was barren, offering nothing of use to him or to humans.

It made him wonder if the whole city would look like this once he helped the survivors clear it of the Ravage Contamination. And what future did the Spartans envision for such a barren landscape? He let the question fade. The affairs of humans were not his concern. As long as they kept to their own territories and stayed out of his, they could do as they pleased.

Before opening a portal to one of his lairs, Jake made sure to scan his surroundings. There was no sign of D anywhere. After their last fight, his Feral Instincts had never warned him about any unseen danger, aning D hadn’t been tracking him. After the battle, D had clearly moved away from Jake as far as possible to prevent his monster side from flaring up and attacking him again.

Satisfied that he wasn’t being watched by enemies and was completely alone, Jake withdrew a tumor from his inventory and set it on the ground. He watched patiently as it expanded, its infection spreading until a dark blotch of Corruption swelled across the floor. When the stain grew large enough to accommodate a Transfer Maw, Jake sent a ntal command for it to begin forming. Within a minute, the maw took shape, its twisted form ready for use.

Just in case D located the Transfer Maw, Jake chose to link the maw to the ten-story lair in New Hope, which was one of his secondary lairs, instead of the Apex Hollow, his main sanctuary. The latter was the most important lair, so he definitely intended to keep it hidden from everyone at any cost.

Now was the ti to check if the Dead City’s fully developed ravagespawn yielded more genetic material than their counterparts in New Hope. Leaving the skeletal fra of a ruined building behind, he waited patiently for ravagespawn to form on the organic matter covering the ground and the other buildings. Several bulbous growths ford all around him, gradually reshaping themselves into monsters.

Once the first one was ready, he launched a cinch net, capturing the creature. He then dealt with the other ravagespawn, gaining a hefty chunk of experience, and dragged the captured monster to the Transfer Maw. He pushed it toward the maw, and it opened its circular jaws wide, swallowing the creature whole. A mont later, the captured monster erged in the heart of his ten-story lair.

Jake himself didn’t follow the monster through, as there was simply no need for him to be physically present there. His lairs were extensions of his will, and he could control all of them even from this far away. So, instead, he instructed his creatures in the lair to bring the captured monster to one of the Extractors so it could be broken down into valuable genetic materials.

He established a ntal link with one of the Oculus Vines to monitor the process. A few minutes later, the process was complete, and a surge of data stread into his mind, revealing the nature and quantity of the newly acquired genetic materials.

He quickly glanced over the list and saw that the amount of genetic materials wasn’t all that much different from those gained from regular monsters or underdeveloped ravagespawn in New Hope. He had obtained about the sa amount of regular genetic materials: biomass, brain matter, and rigidbone.

What was interesting, however, was the fact that one unique genetic material had also been acquired. This was unusual, as such materials could usually only be extracted from elite mutants. Regular ones had no such resources to offer. But fully developed ravagespawn seed to be another matter entirely.

Was this a rare occurrence, or did every type of ravagespawn yield unique genetic materials? It was definitely worth investigating further. Regular genetic materials were common and only used for bioengineering new types of creatures or growing the old ones. Unique genetic materials, however, were essential for unlocking powerful special abilities that his creatures could acquire.

Jake spent half an hour or so capturing ravagespawn and bringing them to his lair for resource extraction. He learned that not every single ravagespawn yielded unique genetic materials, however. Only about one in ten monsters had unique genetic materials to offer.

So, while fully developed ravagespawn granted generous amounts of experience, their common resource yield was unimpressive, not much different from that of regular mutants, sothing he’d already known. But obtaining just one unique genetic material from every tenth ravagespawn wasn’t bad. It wasn’t bad at all.

Besides, he couldn’t help but notice that these genetic materials were unlike any he had encountered before. Apparently, these types of genetic materials could only be obtained from ravagespawn and, therefore, should unlock unique special abilities that he could acquire from nowhere else.

So, perhaps it wasn’t wise for him to rush into helping the Spartans cleanse Dead City of the Ravage Contamination after all. While he had been waging war against Los Demonios, his minions had been ticulously collecting various unique genetic materials, so by this point, he had quite a collection stored in his lairs. He had long intended to experint with all these genetic materials once Los Demonios was dealt with, but so far, he hadn’t gotten around to doing it.

Now, however, the ti to do just that had finally co. He had a wide array of unique genetic materials harvested from regular mutants in New Hope, along with a handful of materials recently obtained from the ravagespawn in Dead City. The possibilities thrilled him. He couldn’t help but wonder what special abilities for his creatures could be unlocked. He had a feeling that the unique genetic materials obtained from the ravagespawn could grant his creatures powers beyond anything they had possessed before.

He took another mont to scan his surroundings one final ti to make sure no one was spying on him. He knew that if soone were watching him with harmful intent, his Feral Instincts would have alerted him. However, if soone was rely observing without hostile intentions, the ability remained silent. That was why it was always wise not to rely entirely on Feral Instincts but also to visually sweep his surroundings for any potential threat.

Spotting nothing suspicious, Jake finally approached the Transfer Maw. It imdiately spread its mouth wide, allowing entry. Jake stepped into the portal, slipping through and erging in his ten‑story lair. It was ti to create the creature he had envisioned and bestow upon it the special ability he intended to unlock, along with any other useful traits he could gather from the genetic materials he had collected.
