Chapter 285: Cell

The instant he pulled off the blindfold, Renlo expected bright and overwhelming light to engulf his eye. In fact, he had squinted his eyes exactly because of this reason.

But there was no light threatening to blind him. He was t with a dim, practically dark room.

Renlo couldn’t understand why the stench beca heavier the instant he removed the blindfold.

But one glance around, and he realized where the sll was coming from. His assumption had been right.

He was inside a large, dark room, filled with nurous weird looking figures, all gazing at him with trembling and cautious eyes.

They were filthy and covered in dirt. From their appearance alone, Renlo could tell they hadn’t bathed in a long while.

Renlo shakily sat up straight. His body was still sore, and pain surged through him at any movent he made. Still, he shoved down the pain and forced himself to stand.

The other figures in the room had begun whispering now, but that was the least of Renlo’s concerns.

‘What are they…’

He gave the figures a closer look. They were all standing at the edge of the room, as though trying to stay as far away from him as possible. But Renlo could see them clearly.

So had different shades of skin. Others had beast body parts. Renlo’s eyes widened as he realized who they were. A na echoed in his mind.

‘Gor’khai.’

He took a step back, only to realize they had filled up every edge of the room. He was surrounded. Renlo gulped, and his mind began spinning.

‘Are they the ones that attacked?’

Malakai had told him he got into a fight with the Gor’khai the day before. He couldn’t help but wonder if this was their payback.

But Renlo shook his head in the next mont. These Gor’khai were also prisoners. It couldn’t have been them who ambushed their squad. His mind tried to replay the fight he’d had with them.

Unfortunately, they had overwheld him, and he had fallen without being able to take down even one.

‘So much for improving.’ Renlo clenched his fists.

He had wanted Malakai to see how much he’d grown. But he had only ended up getting captured. Now he could only hope he wouldn’t turn out to be a liability.

‘I’m sure he escaped.’ He couldn’t imagine anyone capturing that boy. Malakai wasn’t the sort of person you could capture.

‘I have to escape.’

Renlo glanced around one more ti and regretted it. Now he saw what he’d missed. The wet corners filled with piss and feces. That was what caused the stench.

Renlo held his nose and was about to wander around the room when a loud bang echoed.

“Food!”

It ca from a barely discernible iron door in one corner of the room. Renlo felt the fear in the room intensify. The Gor’khai shifted back, as though trying to enter the wall behind them.

The iron door swung open with a loud bang, and a figure walked in with a small cart of food. Renlo had frozen in the middle of the room the mont he saw the figure.

‘A Sanguine.’ Red hair, crimson eyes, there was no doubt about it.

The man’s eyes found Renlo, and he sneered.

“What a waste of our blood.” He clicked his tongue and spat on the ground before suddenly tilting the cart.

The food on it crashed to the floor, soup spilling, other food mixing with dirty sand.

The man laughed and deliberately stepped on one of the breads before turning to leave with the cart.

“You animals better lick your plates clean,” he said, voice mocking. “And arrange it neatly when I get back. If I see a single scrap out of place, I’ll make sure the next thing I serve is your own fucking fingers.”

As the door closed, the silence that fell was palpable. It was only after a few monts that Renlo realized all eyes were fixed on him.

‘They’re afraid.’ He thought, then recalled the man who just left. A Sanguine.

Renlo’s eyes widened.

‘So that’s why.’

He had wondered why they would be scared of him, but he had almost forgotten, he also had crimson hair and eyes.

He was a Sanguine.

They were scared of him because he was a Sanguine.

Renlo glanced at the food. No one had stepped forward to eat. He could tell that they were waiting for him to pick first. They wanted to avoid him.

He thought about backing away, skipping the al altogether… but then his stomach growled.

Renlo cleared his throat and picked up a dium sized bread and water before backing off to a corner of the room.

The instant he moved away, the other figures rushed forward, each picking up sothing from the floor.

Renlo finally got a grip on the number of people inside the room. They were at least three dozen, ranging from different age groups.

Regardless, one thing beca painfully clear, he was the only human in the room. The rest were Gor’khai. Though, he wasn’t sure if they were human or not.

None of them looked out for each other. They picked their food and retreated to their corners, eyes fierce. They didn’t care if the others got any or not.

Renlo caught sight of a young girl, and his heart ached. She was standing alone in the middle of the room. The others had picked up all the food, leaving only scraps behind.

Renlo didn’t know how long it would take for another batch of food to be brought, but judging by the desperation in her eyes, it would be a while.

His legs moved before he could think. From the look in their eyes, none of them was going to help her.

He couldn’t bla them. He couldn’t begin to imagine what they’d gone through in this obvious hellhole. He’d only just arrived, and he already wanted out.

He reached the young girl, splitting his bread in two and stretching out one half towards her.
