Chapter 236: Mission

Karla Sanguine had had an eventful few months.

Before all of this clausterfuck happened, she had been a low ti spy working for the Third Pulse.

Her job had been to gather information from his rivals, and her base of operations had been in a luxurious club, exactly like the one tonight’s mission would occur in.

Karla couldn’t claim to enjoy her profession. For one, she hadn’t chosen to do it.

When there were mouths to feed and no money or food to do it, one tended to let go of choice. To feed and raise her sister, Kiana, she had entered into the life of falsehood and deceit and eventually ended up serving under the Third Pulse.

Her years of service had gone on flawlessly. She was a natural when it ca to extracting information from drunken and lost n who had co for a good ti.

She couldn’t say she enjoyed it, but even she had to admit her talent at the job.

But she had eventually been pulled out from there and asked to spy on a 14 year old that changed her life for good.

She had been caught almost imdiately, tortured, and forcibly turned against her master. However, unlike what one would expect, Karla wasn’t angry, nor did she bear any deep hatred for Malakai. In fact, she was grateful to him.

She had been treated like nothing more than an object while serving under the Third Pulse. But Malakai was completely different. As long as she was truthful and obedient, he never treated her in any bad way.

She had hoped for the worst when asking Malakai to help her little sister, and had been shocked to see he stuck to his side of the bargain.

Her little sister’s few days at the manor had been the most ti Karla had spent with her in years.

And she had been grateful to the Ninth Vein. He hadn’t made her stay uncomfortable. He had treated them with indifference, but Karla couldn’t help but see the kindness in it. It was more than anyone had ever done for her.

Entering The Nocturne, the scent of smoke laced with drugs hit her nose. Karla circulated her blood flow around her body, filtering any toxins out of her system.

She sent a glance toward the other girls. So had begun to sway as they worked, the drug taking root in them.

Still, she didn’t say anything. Her past few days in Sylvastein had been spent trying to gain their trust and have them let her into their inner circle.

Rich clients to won in their profession were like protected assets to elite bodyguards. They held them tight, tighter than she would have hoped. What she had hoped to achieve in the first day had stretched toward the sixth.

The man led them through a hallway and into an expansive room.

It was luxurious. A club, open and dimly lit. Many sat around tables, drinking, talking, getting busy. Others danced to slow, rhythmic music. The place had the feel of secrecy and indulgence wrapped into one.

“Whoa…” one of the girls muttered.

“Is that… is that velvet on the walls?” another whispered.

“This place is amazing,” another breathed, eyes scanning the glowing chandeliers.

Karla still remained silent behind the group. She had been in luxurious clubs before and was used to the flair.

Instead, sohow, her eyes had found themselves locking onto the bartender manning the bar. He was dressed impeccably in the uniform of the Nocturne staff, and even as he served drinks and conversed respectfully with the custors, there was an air of professionalism to him.

‘This bastard,’ Karla cursed. Despite his current disguise, there was no way she wouldn’t recognize him. Unoa.

‘How did he get here?’ she wondered. Malakai had sent them both to Sylvastein to find information from the higher class, but she considered herself way more resourceful than Unoa.

‘How long has he been here?’

“Can we move?”

Karla was pulled out of her thoughts by the sharp voice. She turned and saw the man leading them, along with the other girls, staring at her.

‘Shit.’ She cursed internally. She had slipped.

“…Yes, we can. I apologize, I was just in awe. The Nocturne is a really beautiful place.”

The man gave only a curt nod. “Follow .” He turned and continued walking, his steps swift.

As she followed behind, one of the girls approached. “Hey Bean, how’re you holding up?” she whispered, voice warm.

Karla turned to the red haired woman and flashed a smile. “I’ll be fine, Julia. This is all just so…”

“Overwhelming?” Julia finished, reaching out to grab her hand as they walked. Her hands were warm.

“I understand how you feel,” she said. “But we do this to survive, not because we want to. Rember that, and it’ll make… things easier.”

Karla nodded with a smile. Julia had been her entry into the group. A sob story about losing her family to stray darkness creatures on her way to Sylvastein was all it had taken to warm her way into her heart.

Julia was a good person, and Karla felt a bit bad for lying to her. But her words were true.

‘To survive.’

The man led them away from the large room and into a quieter side of the building. There, they entered a hallway with doors on both sides.

Karla took note of everything. Their path, possible escape routes, how many steps to get outside. As a spy, it was important to always be alert and ready for surprises.

The man stopped at a door and turned toward them.

“Inside here are mbers of the Tendrix Clan. I expect you treat them all accordingly.” His voice was cold, and his eyes, colder. The won were people who had seen a lot in life; there was no missing the threat in his words.

As they all nodded, the man knocked on the door twice before opening it and beckoning them inside. The door slamd shut behind Karla as she swept through the room.
