Chapter 75: Leaving [6] - System’s Interference

When Liora was still a Little Devil and was advancing to become a Young Devil, she had also been transported to this dark void upon leaving the River of Oblivion.

Here, she faced many options—each represented by a different shining star—each symbolizing a different bloodline.

If she were an ordinary Little Devil, she could have only chosen her bloodline based on her intuition, hoping that her luck would be good and she would obtain something suitable.

This process meant that although a Little Devil could get lucky and awaken a powerful bloodline, the chances of that happening were extremely slim, approaching zero.

One should not be fooled by the number of powerful Devils that Liora had met throughout her journey.

Countless Devils were born and died at any given moment, and those that she had met were those who happened to stand out among them.

The rest of them—the weak ones—had either died or faded into obscurity. In her past life, this phenomenon was commonly known as survivorship bias.

Fortunately, with the System’s interference, Liora was able to take another route, selecting the bloodline that best suited her.

Even though Liora had yet to find out her bloodline’s true identity, she understood its value very well.

Without the Unknown bloodline’s assistance, she might have risen through the Crucible eventually, but the time it would have taken her would have been many times longer.

Thus, faced with the appearance of the familiar prompt that was urging her to make a decision, she didn’t hesitate.

With a move of her mind, she immediately selected "Yes".

Following her confirmation, the translucent window turned into a bunch of tiny glowing lights before rearranging into rows of words.

[Analysis Complete.]

[Available Reward Options:]

1. Let the Demon World further awaken your bloodline. It will upgrade your Bloodline Prototype into a complete Bloodline based on its database.

You will receive the standard Lesser Devil Abilities. Three of your Bloodline Abilities will be upgraded as your reward for completing the Demon World’s Trial.

{Current Bloodline Abilities: Shadow Assimilation, Soul Tear, Void Instinct, Combat Instinct, Soul Devouring, Low-Level Regeneration}

...

2. Permit the System to further awaken your bloodline by consuming Evolution Points. It will upgrade your Bloodline Prototype into a complete Bloodline.

You will receive the standard Lesser Devil Abilities. The number of upgraded abilities, newly awakened abilities, and the extent of their power depends entirely on the amount of Evolution Points invested.

Unlike the advancement to become a Young Devil, Devils didn’t face as many choices when transforming into Lesser Devils.

They could only let the Demon World upgrade their Bloodline Prototype, turning it into a complete Bloodline and improving their existing abilities during the process.

As for improving or even changing their bloodline?

Although there were indeed cases of people modifying their bloodline—either enhancing its quality or changing it completely—such cases were very rare.

Moreover, there were no records of such a thing happening to anyone during the Lesser Devil Stage.

This seemed strange, but it made perfect sense.

Otherwise, the initial bloodline that one awakened would not be deemed as important, and Devils would not envy the lucky ones.

Fortunately, Liora was destined to be different from those ordinary Devils. The System provided her one more option.

But even so, she didn’t rush to make a decision. Instead, she fell into deep thought.

"Although the words of the System seem complicated, their meaning is actually quite simple. I can either allow the Demon World to upgrade my bloodline—just like any other Devil would do upon advancing—or I can trust the System to guide my transformation."

"The difference is that the improvement I’ll receive by selecting the latter will depend on the amount of Evolution Points I invest."

Having spent a year harvesting the Crucible, receiving "taxes" from the City Lords every month, Liora had managed to accumulate a little over two hundred thousand points.

But it was exactly because of this that Liora worried.

Even though such a large number of Evolution Points could be converted into several powerful abilities through the Creation Panel, she didn’t know whether her points were enough to make the second option worth it.

If she were to spend her Evolution Points only for her to end up weaker than she would have been if she were to go through the normal process, Liora would only be able to blame herself.

Thus, she faced a crucial dilemma.

Should she take a gamble at the unknown second option and hope that everything would go well, or should she choose the first—ordinary but absolutely safe—option?

In the end, Liora chose the former.

Her thought process was quite simple.

"Since I was given this option, it should be beneficial to me. If the System wanted to harm me, it would have already done it long ago."

"It wouldn’t go to such lengths just to pocket my Evolution Points... right?
