Chapter 160: King of Knights [16] - Change in Mentality
Though they were many, the individual strength of the attacking beasts was not high.
Most of them were only Knight Apprentices, with only a small percentage of them reaching the True Knight rank.
Even these, however, fell under the barrage of metal arrows, collapsing to the ground and becoming part of the mountain of corpses.
Originally, the formation of the humans seemed imperable, as if no beast could possibly enter their city.
But not long after Liora’s arrival, a sudden change occurred.
A black figure sprang out of the wave of beasts and rushed towards the stone walls.
The figure’s speed was extremely quick, leaving only afterimages behind. It was impossible for ordinary humans to catch a glimpse of its outline.
But standing on top of the wall, Liora could easily see the figure’s true appearance.
It was a massive wolf—more than five meters tall—with thick black fur and three heads on its shoulders.
Its three mouths were open, revealing the many rows of razor-sharp teeth inside, which dripped with an unknown liquid that fell on the ground and corroded it.
Each time the wolf took a step, the ground beneath it would shake, as if it could cause an earthquake on its own.
Liora ignored its appearance. She had seen much more terrifying creatures during her stay in the Crucible.
What caught Liora’s attention was actually the strength of the Wolf Beast.
In her senses, its strength had reached the peak of the True Knight rank, surpassing any other among the many beasts.
Moreover, as a beast, its combat power could not be judged according to common sense.
In Liora’s estimate, this wolf should be able to fight against a human Great Knight, and it could escape unharmed even if it suffered a defeat.
Seeing the Beast Wolf charging towards the stone wall, Liora’s eyes narrowed.
She didn’t rush to take action.
She believed that the human side should have already accounted for the emergence of such beasts.
Even without her, the Knights and soldiers should be able to deal with it.
Perhaps this was an opportunity for her to witness the famous Duchess’s many tricks.
Sure enough, when the Wolf Beast was a few hundred meters away from the wall and looked about to smash into it with a leap, the entrance of the city slowly opened.
A small team of Knights stepped out of it, wearing thick metal armor and holding large shields that were taller than they were.
With no hesitation, the Knights rushed towards the Wolf Beast, stopping in front of it and bringing down their shields to block its path.
Their actions proved effective. The charge of the wolf indeed stopped.
However, the Knights paid a price.
The moment the Wolf Beast smashed into the shields, its movements halted.
Yet, it reacted quickly.
Its three heads stooped down and opened wide before each of them grabbed a Knight and swallowed them whole.
Then, with fresh blood still on its mouths, it pounced onto its other prey.
The Knights were unable to put up a fight.
Before long, they all ended up becoming the Wolf Beast’s food, their flesh shredded like paper.
Blood splattered and painted the wolf’s razor-sharp teeth, making the scene eerie and terrifying.
The wolf raised its heads and howled towards the sky before resuming its earlier charge.
But the soldiers on the wall didn’t flinch.
It was as if they knew something that the wolf didn’t.
Indeed, just when the wolf was about to reach the walls, its movements suddenly paused.
Its red, bloodthirsty eyes became clear for a brief second, as its body began convulsing.
The next moment, its flesh ripped apart, and green liquid flowed out of the cracks, while the Wolf’s aura grew increasingly weaker.
A loud, painful cry followed.
Watching this from the top of the wall, Liora immediately realized what was going on.
"Using one’s body as a way to feed the beast poison. How cruel. But also... how admirable.
