Chapter 97: Chapter 96 Elf Gathering
“Russell, what brings you here?” Roland ca downstairs to greet Russell. “Father and mother took Lola to visit grandma.”
“Oh.” Russell nodded. “I had sothing to ask father, but since he’s not here, talking to you is just the sa.”
“What is it?”
“I found another spirit insect…” Russell hadn’t finished his sentence.
Roland burst out, “Fuck! What did you say? You found another spirit insect… You, found, another spirit insect?”
“You heard right, I, indeed, found another spirit insect.”
Russell mimicked Roland’s astonished tone, recounted the fact again, and then added, “It’s a dandelion bug. I want so information on planting dandelion magic potion, and while I’m at it, have my spirit insects et up with Lorey and Tess.”
“Lucky guy!” Roland’s gaze towards Russell was filled with envy and resentnt. “I roam around the base of the volcano every day and Shadowfla Dragon doesn’t even glance at
once, how co it has taken such a liking to you!”
He started counting on his fingers, “First a birch bug, then a gold and silver wolfhound, after that a bloodfang fungi bug, and now a dandelion bug… oh yes, and the magic pearl, Lola shows off it like a treasure every day!”
The more he counted, the more Roland beca agitated, “Oh my God, Russell, you’ve been enfeoffed for less than three months, how have you picked up such a trove of treasures!”
“Hmm.” Russell couldn’t help but nod, “Now that you ntion it, I also realize that Shadowfla Dragon does indeed favor .”
He pretended to ask seriously, “Do you think the Shadowfla Dragon has taken a fancy to ? Brother, do you think I could successfully ride the dragon if the baron can’t? And if I were to ride a dragon, what conditions would I need, would marrying Princess Kunlaya do?”
“You’re gasping even as I call you fat!” Roland rolled his eyes.
“Just discussing.”
“Give it a rest, now I know what your little ambitions are all about, you’re not into Malena because you’ve got your eye on Princess Kunlaya.” Roland couldn’t hide his sarcasm as he struck a blow,”I’d advise you to take a break, all your small antics don’t hold a candle to the Shadowfla Dragon even batting an eyelid, let alone taking a real look at you.”
“It doesn’t matter whether Shadowfla Dragon takes a proper look at
or not, what matters is that I get the benefits,” Russell said with a cheerful smile.
Although he wouldn’t compete with his big brother Roland for the inheritance, teasing Roland to get him all riled up and fired up was too good to pass up.
After all, he was also the second in line to inherit from Mr. Luo Man.
Big brother Roland was always on guard against him as if guarding against a thief, which inevitably made him feel a tad displeased—he had already made it clear that he would no longer attempt to ride Mr. Ross.
Teasing aside.
As Roland ca to terms with the facts, he no longer overreacted. After seeing the few spirit insects Russell brought, he imdiately arranged for Carter to take these seven spirit insects to the castle’s special spirit room.
“I’ll go and take a look,” Russell said.
“Missing Lorey and Tess, are you?” Roland got up and followed Russell upstairs, presumably not comfortable with the idea of Russell being alone with the spirits.
After all, this castle, this clay dragon, and all these spirits were in his mind destined to be his inheritance.
No one else was allowed to interfere.
Russell nodded, “Indeed, I’ve missed them, having stayed at Fluorescent Castle several tis and not seen Lorey and Tess play and squabble.”
“They are always playing and squabbling; it’s just that they might not be very close to you, so they don’t hang around you much.”
“Hmm, is that so.”
“It is. They don’t hang around
much either, after all, they’re bound by contract to father and mother,” Roland shrugged. “I’m relieved, actually. I can hardly stand those two little rascals always at it all day long.”
“If you can’t stand them, you could give them to ; I like a lively environnt.”
“Don’t even think about it,” Roland said with a smile as he slapped Russell’s shoulder. “This is where Lorey and Tess live, and they’re going to live here for a lifeti.”
Listening to the banter between the brothers behind him, the old butler Carter involuntarily let slip a smile.
Kind fathers and filial sons, friendly brothers and respectful younger siblings, these aren’t the norm in life. Only with constant bickering, mutual disdain coupled with concern for one another—that’s the atmosphere of family.
As the three of them arrived at the door of the Elf Room, before Carter could even insert the key, from a palm-sized window that opened above the door flew out a palm-sized cartoon doll with transparent wings flapping on her back and a cluster of blue flowers blooming atop her head.
This was Tess, the Rain Lasting Flower Sprite, a part of Lady ryl’s dowry from years past.
At that mont, Tess, with her chubby little arms on her hips, turned to look at the three of them and questioned in a babyish tone, “Wa wa wa wa!”
Unfortunately.
No one understood what she was saying.
Roland waved his hand: “Tess, Russell has brought so Spirit Insects to hang out with you all, to make sure they play nice.”
“Wa?” Tess tilted her head, puzzled.
“Chirp chirp chirp.” A palm-sized green fat bird squeezed out from the small window on the door—it was a Mushroom Bird, Lorey. Mushroom Bugs are a branch of Spirit Insects, and Mushroom Birds are naturally a branch of Little Sprites, only called by a separate na because of their different forms.
“Lorey, you’re out too, perfect. Let’s go welco the new friends,” Roland called out warmly.
He was working on strengthening his relationship with the sprites.
Even though he would contract with these sprites when he eventually inherited the title of baron, it was always good to have a strong relationship with them.
Old butler Carter had already opened the door to the Elf Room: “Young masters, you can put the Spirit Insects in now. When Mr. Russell decides to leave, I’ll pick them out one by one to take back with you.”
“Alright.” Russell opened the jade box, where seven Spirit Insects were lazily sleeping.
Little Sprite Tess quickly flew over, grabbed a Rain Lasting Flower Bug, and started crying out “Wa wa,” seemingly saying she recognized this Spirit Insect.
Of course, she recognized it—the Rain Lasting Flower Bugs were a gift to Russell from Mr. Luo Man.
However, Tess quickly plopped the Rain Lasting Flower Bug back into the jade box, then grabbed a Dill Bug and continued her noisy cries.
Russell’s lips twitched, but seeing the Rain Lasting Flower Bug flip over and continue to lazily lie there, he relaxed again.
After all, Spirit Insects are magical creations; they’re not so fragile. A bit of bumping and banging is no different to them than a tickle.
All in all, amidst Tess and Lorey’s slightly violent form of greeting, all seven of Russell’s Spirit Insects were placed into the Elf Room—around the Elf Room were rows of shelves on which dozens of the Glowing Mushrooms Family’s Spirit Insects crawled about in disarray.
“I hope this gathering of sprites will be sowhat useful,” Russell thought as he watched old butler Carter close the door of the Elf Room.
A gathering of sprites is considered a thod of cultivating them.
The sprites of the greater nobility have a higher probability of evolving. Over ti, it has been realized that sprites need social interaction.
Each interaction can be regarded as an exchange of information pheromones; the more information pheromones collected, the more it can stimulate a Spirit Insect to transform into a Little Sprite, and even a Little Sprite to transform into a Great Sprite.
Of course.
Exactly how information pheromones are exchanged and how to increase the probability of evolution has yet to be explicitly determined.
But sprite gatherings have already beco a common practice among nobles.
