He reached out to grab his little sister but was smacked away by Ye Feng.

“I haven’t held her enough, what are you trying to grab?”

Ye Feng glared at him unhappily, lifting up his daughter to keep her out of reach of his two troubleso sons.

“Hehe.”

The little girl loved being held up high, giggling with delight.

“Good girl.”

Hearing her soft, cooing voice, Ye Feng’s heart nearly lted as he spun around with her in his arms.

“Hehe.”

The little girl wasn’t afraid of dizziness and laughed even more happily.

“Dad, let us hold Little Sister for a while.”

The two sons watched enviously, howling in unison.

“Dinner’s ready.”-

Xie Ying walked over from the kitchen with a tray, lifting the door curtain to enter the room.

“You two.”-

Ye Feng seized the opportunity to dismiss his two sons, “Bring the table onto the platform, help your mother get chopsticks, and set the table.”

“Hey.”

Seeing no hope, the two sons lowered their heads with a sigh.

“You two are not close to people at all.”

Xie Ying held the tray and waited by the bed, watching her two sons move the table slowly. She felt irritated and almost slapped them again.

“Howl.”

A wolf howl rang out from the woods, clearer than before, as if it was right beside them.

“There’s a wolf.”

“Woof woof!”

Under the fine rain, the small village was in an uproar as dogs charged out of their courtyards and barked towards the woods.

“Oh my.”

Xie Ying shuddered in shock, almost dropping the tray.

“You guys wait here, I’ll go take a look.”

Ye Feng’s eyebrows tensed as he placed his daughter on the platform, drew his sword hanging from the head of the bed and rushed out into the rain.

“Sister isn’t scared.”

Ye Zilin took the chance to hold his sister, feeling proud. “Big Brother is here, Big Brother will protect you.”

“Big Brother.”

The little girl understood and hugged her big brother’s neck, calling out sweetly.

“Sister.”

Ye Zimo, unwilling to fall behind, patted his chest and swore, “Second Brother will also protect you.”

“You two get on the platform and eat.”

Xie Ying took a deep breath to steady herself, set the table, drove her two sons onto the platform, and took her daughter back into her arms.

Dinner had vegetables and at, a plate of wild mushrooms stewed with mountain chicken, a plate of cabbage stewed with vermicelli, a dish of pickled vegetables, a bowl of millet porridge, and four cornbread.

Ye Zilin and Ye Zimo had spent the afternoon wandering in the woods, their stomachs long empty. Slling the aroma of the at, they instantly perked up.

The brothers picked up their chopsticks, both reaching for a piece of chicken.

Their chopsticks clashed with a clear sound in front of the chicken.

The brothers hesitated for a mont, staring at each other stubbornly, starting a fierce battle for the chicken.

The chopsticks flew, the clashing sounds unceasing.

The brothers fought over the chicken, refusing to give in.

“Hehe.”

The little girl found it amusing and laughed with eyes shaped like crescents.

“Hey.”

Xie Ying wasn’t surprised by the boys’ antics and let them fight, scooping so porridge into a small spoon, blowing on it until it was cool enough to feed her daughter.

The little girl really enjoyed the porridge, smacking her lips and eating it happily.

*

The howling in the woods vanished as Ye Feng returned ho carrying a wounded teenager on his back, avoiding the villagers under the cover of darkness, using shortcuts to get back.

“Daddy.”

The little girl heard heavy footsteps, her thick, long eyelashes fluttering as she stretched out her little hand, pointing outside the courtyard.

“Your dad’s back?”

Xie Ying was overjoyed, putting down her daughter and lifting the curtain to greet him outside.
