At the dining table, Cheng Shishi was as if sitting on pins and needles, not even daring to look Bai Yiran in the eyes.
"Shishi, what’s wrong with you? You’re out of sorts since coming back from the bathroom. Eat sothing!" Xia Lian noticed her daughter hadn’t picked up her chopsticks and felt sothing was off. "What did you two sisters talk about in the bathroom? You were gone for so long and returned without speaking a word!"
Xia Lian’s gaze flitted between Cheng Shishi and Bai Yiran. She had only recently reconciled with Cheng Gang, and the family life had just gotten back on track. If Cheng Shishi and Bai Yiran caused so conflict now, the household might be thrown into chaos once more.
It baffled Xia Lian how the two sisters, who used to get along so well, had co to this? Why were they frequently at odds?
Cheng Shishi glanced at Bai Yiran, but was startled by Bai Yiran’s seemingly perceptive eyes and quickly diverted her gaze to the table. "Oh, Mom, don’t worry. My big sister and I are fine, right, sis?"
Bai Yiran stared at Cheng Shishi, and after a while, a slight smile ford. "That’s right, aunt, Shishi and I are fine."
After speaking, she fell silent and continued eating.
Since the two sisters had said so, everyone thought nothing of it, attributing Bai Yiran’s subdued mood to it being her mother’s death anniversary today.
Only Leng Yichen looked deeply at Bai Yiran, his large hand grasping hers beneath the table.
Before long, the al was finished. On such a day, no one felt like chatting or making small talk. Grandma and the children were waiting at ho, having already called several tis to ask when Bai Yiran would return.
Cheng Shishi followed Cheng Gang and Xia Lian ho, sitting in her seat and gazing out the window.
Earlier, at the restaurant entrance, Bai Yiran’s words of warning echoed in Cheng Shishi’s mind.
"Shishi, don’t hold illusions about the wrong person, or you’ll end up hurting yourself."
Currently, Bai Yiran didn’t know that Wu Chengzu could very well be the person with the snake-shaped birthmark on his ankle. If she knew, her warning wouldn’t have been so simple!
Cheng Shishi felt unsettled inside. She urgently needed to see Wu Chengzu to confirm this matter. Otherwise, she couldn’t have peace of mind.
Deep down, she still entertained the fantasy that perhaps she was too tired back then and saw wrong, and Wu Chengzu didn’t have that on his ankle.
Perhaps Wu Chengzu wasn’t a terrifying person like Nawa, and it was all just her overthinking...
"Dad, pull over ahead. I just rembered there’s sothing I need to do."
Cheng Gang glanced at Cheng Shishi through the rearview mirror. "What do you need to do?"
"I need to go to a classmate’s house to get a book, a very important book." Cheng Shishi found that ever since she t Wu Chengzu, her ability to lie had improved significantly, reaching a point where she could do it with a straight face and calm heart.
After all, Cheng Gang wouldn’t gaze into her eyes like Bai Yiran does and probe into her heart.
Cheng Gang dropped Cheng Shishi off by the roadside and reminded her to co ho early. Cheng Shishi readily agreed before disappearing into the crowd.
Watching Cheng Gang’s car drive away, Cheng Shishi dialed Wu Chengzu’s number, unsurprisingly receiving no answer. Clutching her phone tightly, she got into a taxi heading towards Wu Chengzu’s place.
Unaware, this action would directly push her into the abyss.
At the Wu Family, Wu Jingjing was sitting on the couch playing gas when the doorbell rang.
"Teacher Xiao Cheng?" Wu Jingjing was surprised to see Cheng Shishi at her doorstep. Lately, they had only been in contact via WeChat and hadn’t t face-to-face.
"Jingjing, is your dad ho?" Cheng Shishi’s expression wasn’t great, her face rather pale.
Wu Jingjing shook her head. "No, he’s been quite busy lately."
"Okay." Cheng Shishi nodded. "Can I co in?"
