After dinner, Yolanda Greenwood was still worried and took so food to go out.
To her surprise, as soon as she left the building, she saw Little May standing inside the security door, watching eagerly outside.
"May?" Yolanda crouched at the door. "Has your dad gone out again?"
"Shh! Keep your voice down!" The little girl covered her mouth with tiny fingers. "Daddy is sleeping, we can’t wake him."
Yolanda nodded slightly, whispering, "Have you had dinner?"
Little May quickly glanced at the food in Yolanda’s hands before shaking her head. "No, daddy is tired and hasn’t prepared dinner."
Yolanda imdiately understood. Leah Diaz was right; the food she had just brought over was eaten by that man.
Unbelievable, how could there be such fathers in the world?
May is still so young; how could her mother not care about her?
She carefully opened the packaging, handing the bread and milk through the security door, "Eat this, take your ti."
"Thank you, auntie." Little May, well-behaved and obviously starving, began to eat in small bites.
Yolanda felt it was cold outside, and May was wearing very little, so she asked her to co inside to eat, "May, co inside and eat. You’re wearing so little, don’t catch a cold."
But May surprisingly shook her head, insisting on standing at the door to eat.
Yolanda then gathered her own clothes. "Alright, then, auntie will stay here with you."
As soon as she finished speaking, she heard footsteps from inside, indicating the man had woken up.
Yolanda noticed May’s expression turned to one of panic, as if she had done sothing wrong.
She frowned.
Indeed, the man soon ca out. He lowered his head to look at May, then glanced outside at Yolanda, and opened the security door.
"Co in," he called indifferently, turning back inside.
Yolanda hesitated, standing at the doorway.
"Auntie, co in," urged May, waving at her with a noticeably joyful face.
Yolanda went inside.
The apartnt layout was the sa as Leah’s, but it was cluttered everywhere with dirty clothes, takeout containers, and such, making it hard to find a place to step.
The man carelessly picked up a pile from the sofa and threw it aside, gesturing with his eyes for Yolanda to sit.
"No thank you," Yolanda replied, feeling awkward.
The man didn’t mind, finding himself a place to sit, half-closing his eyes, looking very tired.
Little May stood obediently by Yolanda’s side, nibbling on her food.
Up close, her clothes looked oversized and dirty, so parts even torn, appearing like picked-up rags.
And the man, his clothes weren’t much better; if seen outside, one might think he was holess.
Yolanda’s frown deepened, wanting to ask about their situation but not knowing how to start.
"I ca to M country with her mother," the man started to speak on his own accord, "but not long after the child was born, she ran back to our country. I’m stuck here alone with the child, unable to go back, and I can’t just abandon her, so I just manage sohow."
There was undisguised irritation in the man’s voice.
Yolanda saw Little May flinch, hiding slightly behind her.
After so thought, Yolanda carefully spoke, "But she is so young, it’s really dangerous to leave her alone at ho all the ti."
"I have no choice; I need to go out to earn money," the man ran his fingers through his hair.
Yolanda looked helplessly at Little May.
May tily looked up, her big eyes pitifully gazing back at her.
Just then, the man opened his eyes, witnessing this scene.
He asked, "Are you new here? Living upstairs?"
"Yes, I just moved in, but I won’t be staying long," Yolanda forced a smile.
The man casually picked up a set of keys from the nearby coffee table and tossed them to her, "If it’s convenient, can you please look after the child sotis?"
Yolanda caught the keys, looking at him with slight surprise.
"If you don’t want to, just put the keys down and leave right now," his tone was very assertive.
Yolanda hesitated for a mont, then chose to keep the keys. "Alright, but I also work during the day. In the evenings, if you’re not around, I’ll let May stay with ."
"Whatever," the man closed his eyes again.
Before leaving, Yolanda reminded him, "I can only stay here for three months; you need to figure sothing out."
The man chuckled lowly, "Maybe we won’t need three months; we might move before then."
Yolanda bid farewell to Little May and went upstairs.
She imdiately inford Leah Diaz, regretfully saying, "I’m sorry, I made a decision without your consent."
"Don’t worry; I’ll try to keep her in my room without her wandering off."
Leah chuckled softly, "What do you take for? A big bad wolf?"
She shook her head, "Actually, I feel sorry for the child too, but... my financial ans are limited; I really can’t help much."
Yolanda breathed a sigh of relief, as long as Leah didn’t object.
They chatted for a while longer and decided to go to bed early, as Yolanda had just arrived and hadn’t yet adjusted to the ti difference.
Yet just after Yolanda had showered, she received a call from Dr. Sterling.
"Dr. Sterling? Is sothing the matter?" she asked softly while drying her hair.
"Could you co downstairs?" Adam Sterling chuckled, "I’m downstairs; I brought you sothing."
"Okay, I’ll be right down." Yolanda quickly changed her clothes and went downstairs, indeed finding Adam Sterling standing by his car, carrying several bags.
She hurried over, "I don’t lack anything here; you didn’t have to co all this way."
"Just passing by,"Adam Sterling laughed lightly, "I was out helping with procurent for the base today, so I bought a bit extra."
Yolanda nodded, "Alright, thank you so much."
She noticed another person in the back seat of the car, "Is that your comrade? Want to co up for a bit?"
"No need, my friend has social anxiety." Adam Sterling deliberately raised his voice, "I’ll help you bring the stuff up, then head back."
"Alright, really, thank you for the trouble." Yolanda felt quite embarrassed.
Adam Sterling helped bring the stuff up, then took a look around the apartnt before heading back downstairs.
Leah Diaz curiously asked Yolanda, "Is that your boyfriend?"
"No, just a friend, a regular friend." Yolanda looked at the items, which were mostly food items. She shared so snacks with Leah, and the rest went into the fridge.
Adam Sterling returned to his car, looked at the person in the back seat, and shook his head helplessly, "Aren’t you going to go up for a visit?"
The person in the back didn’t respond.
Adam Sterling resigned, turned back toward him, "Big Captain, are you really going to play the good deed doer without leaving your na?"
"Drive!" Noah Coldson looked out from the window; he knew Yolanda lived on the fourth floor.
Adam Sterling shook his head; Noah Coldson had also arrived at the base on the sa day Yolanda had reached M country.
He had been wondering why Noah Coldson suddenly changed his mind, but he soon found out it was because of Yolanda. However, the mission this ti was very dangerous, and he didn’t hope for Noah Coldson to get involved.
But now, all he could do was to hope for everything to go smoothly.
