Once all the dishes were served, Caden picked out a piece of fish and carefully removed all the bones one by one.
Then he placed it in Chloe’s bowl: "Here, eat up, there are no bones left."
Chloe pointed at the crab cakes on the table: "That’s a female crab, your favorite. Eat up while it’s hot."
"This is the dessert I ordered for you. Don’t eat too much, or you’ll get fat."
"Caden, those shrimp are really good. You should try so too."
The way the two of them took care of each other like no one else was there made Silas’s finger around his chopsticks turn pale and cold.
Chloe had never served him food!
Nor had she ever looked at him with eyes so gentle.
Chase, seeing how pitiful he looked, quickly picked up a spare rib and put it in his bowl.
"Eat up, this is sweet and sour ribs. I already got rid of the bone for you. Don’t eat too much, or you’ll end up with too much fat."
Silas was already annoyed, and hearing that, he shot Chase a glare: "I’m not stupid, I know what spare ribs look like."
Chase: Aren’t you stupid for coming here just to torture yourself?
By the ti the al was over, Silas was just full of anger.
Watching Chloe and Caden interact so intimately almost made his lungs explode from jealousy.
He didn’t believe n and won could be "just friends."
Everyone used friendship as a front, but secretly had other plans.
Caden was no exception.
From the way he looked at Chloe, Silas could tell he was definitely up to no good.
Absolutely filthy.
When Chloe went to the restroom, Silas found an excuse to get up too.
He leaned against the wall outside the restroom and lit a cigarette.
He took a deep drag, but even the heavy nicotine couldn’t drive away the darkness in his heart.
Chloe ca out of the restroom and found Silas standing there, looking so troubled.
How could she not know what was up with him?
But she chose to look the other way.
Pretending not to see him, she tried to walk right past him.
But she only made it a few steps before her wrist was grabbed, and with a tug she was pulled into a wide, strong embrace.
Startled, Chloe hurried to pull back: "Silas, let go! People will see us."
Silas gave a soft, low laugh: "Just now you pretended not to see , and now suddenly you know exactly who I am? Dr. Nash’s eyes can bring the dead back to life, huh?"
Chloe struggled a bit: "The lights were dim, I didn’t see clearly."
Silas held her tight against him, his handso face coming dangerously close to Chloe’s.
"Well, can you see clearly now?"
"I see you, now let go."
Instead of letting go, Silas leaned in and blew softly against her ear.
His voice was husky as he said: "Are you really so scared people will see? Why is it that you can joke around and laugh with Caden, but with , you have to keep your distance? Chloe, are you hiding from for a reason, or do you have so secret you’re afraid will be exposed?"
That one line made cold sweat run down Chloe’s back.
She just knew, spending too much ti with Silas would get her in trouble.
Frightened, she hurried to explain: "You’re not the sa as him. He’s a friend who’s saved my life before, and you... you’re soone who’s helped a lot."
Hearing that, Silas pinched her chin, jealousy blazing in his eyes.
"Both of us saved your life, but he gets to be your friend while I’m just your benefactor? Chloe, I don’t give a damn about being your stupid benefactor."
Feeling the danger flashing in his eyes, Chloe clung tightly to Silas’s shirt.
She knew he was on the edge of losing it.
If he snapped, she wouldn’t stand a chance.
So Chloe quickly softened her tone: "You’re a friend too—a very important friend. Is that good enough?"
"No!" Silas’s tone was anything but friendly.
Figures—he was here just to pick a fight.
"Then what do you want?"
Silas’s pale fingers tightened on her chin as he stared straight at her: "I want you to smile at . I want you to rember what I like. I want you to serve food."
His voice was full of barely contained grievance.
What he really wanted to say was, don’t you dare smile at other n, don’t you dare be nice to anyone but .
If you’re good to soone else, I’ll destroy them.
But right now, he was nothing to her—he had no right to demand any of that.
All he could do was back down and settle for less.
Chloe couldn’t help but grumble inwardly: How is this guy still so jealous?
She nodded reluctantly: "I’ll try."
Silas refused to let it go: "Then smile for now."
Chloe mustered up a very gentle smile for him. "Happy now?"
Though he knew her smile wasn’t genuine, Silas still felt way less sulky all of a sudden.
He tapped her on the head: "Rember your promise—or see what I’ll do to you."
Chloe quickly escaped in fright.
Watching her scramble away, Silas’s lips curled into a sinister grin.
"Letting you get away now, but in the future it won’t be so easy. Debts must be paid. I can’t wait for that day."
——
The next day, Chloe got an invitation from an international dical organization, asking her and Caden to attend a dical symposium in Varden.
Many top dical professionals would be there; it was a great opportunity for communication and learning.
Chloe agreed without hesitation.
She packed her bag and headed to Varden with Caden on the high-speed train.
anwhile, Silas spent the whole afternoon distracted, constantly checking the ti.
When the eting finally ended, he got up right away and returned to his office.
The young secretary, curious, gossiped with Assistant Paxton: "Assistant Paxton, is President Prescott dating soone? He looked just like a man in love, all eager for a date."
"And I swear, this must be his first date. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be so nervous. Is our President Prescott finally going to blossom?"
Hearing the chatter, the assistant couldn’t help but think: It is true that President Prescott is going on a date, but with a married woman—he’s playing the howrecker.
He coughed lightly: "Stop prying into the boss’s private life. Get back to work."
Silas returned to the office, the assistant following him inside.
"Where’s the bracelet I asked you to buy?"
The assistant quickly handed it over: "Here it is, this season’s latest. Dr. Nash will definitely love it."
Silas glanced at the pink-diamond-encrusted bracelet, and suddenly thought of Sienna.
That girl was obsessed with pink things.
She even liked all her condoms pink and strawberry flavored.
He closed the box, stood up and said, "You don’t need to co with tonight. You can clock off."
Heading ho this early for the first ti ever, the assistant cheered inside.
He really hoped the boss would go on more dates.
Silas changed into a new outfit and stood in front of the mirror for a long ti before finally grabbing his car keys and leaving.
On the way, he called Julian: "Julian, don’t wait up for tonight. I’m going on a date with your mom."
Julian’s eyes went wide with disbelief. Didn’t his mom just tell him she was going on a business trip?
Then who was his dad going on a date with?
Totally clueless, Silas arrived at the restaurant early and even had the place specially decorated.
But after waiting for ages, he still didn’t see Chloe arrive.
Suddenly sothing felt off, so he pulled out his phone and called her.
"Chloe, weren’t you taking out to dinner? How co you’re still not here?"
Chloe was stunned for several seconds before answering, "Sorry, President Prescott. I’m in Varden on a business trip."
