[Main Quest: Survive the pursuit of the Mountain Evil God for 30 days.]
As Bai Mu's gaze swept across the thatched cottage, the notification sound of the Main Quest chid in his ears.
'The Mountain Evil God must be that wild boar outside,' he thought.
A countdown appeared on the quest panel. The duration of this Script was almost half as short as the Abandoned City of Doppelgangers, yet right from the start, he had to deal with a massive wild boar with an off-the-charts danger level. Judging by the conditions of the Main Quest, the Mountain Evil God would actively track his footprints.
The consequences of being caught had been vividly displayed in the introductory cinematic. This creature showed absolutely no rcy to humans, refusing to rest until it had trampled their corpses into an unrecognizable pulp, acting as if humanity had dug up its ancestral graves.
The information gleaned from the cinematic was quite limited, so Bai Mu was unsure just how strong the Mountain Evil God's combat prowess truly was. However, since Paradise had thrown him into this Script, it definitely wouldn't assign him an enemy that could be easily defeated with his current equipnt and skills.
It was even possible that the so-called Mountain Evil God was the type of entity that could infinitely resurrect after being killed. It reminded him of those invincible vengeful spirits in horror movies. No matter where you hid or what kind of exorcist or sorcerer you hired to cast spells, the ghost would inevitably crawl out of the television or the toilet to wring your neck. Typically, these kinds of monsters could not be defeated through physical force. Usually, one had to find a way to resolve their grievances to lay them to rest—such as gathering their scattered bones from the wilderness, digging a proper grave, and burning so spirit money.
What exactly the situation was with this Mountain Evil God, and whether it could even be laid to rest, remained unknown based on the current information.
However, Bai Mu could hear the heavy, ragged breathing and the thudding impacts outside. The beast was rampaging through the village. Bai Mu approached the edge of the house, summoned the Hand of Walrider, and took out a Guard Mushroom. Combining them into a "mobile ward," he tossed it outside to observe the situation.
The inconspicuous Guard Mushroom ascended into the darkness, hovering at its maximum height of eighteen ters above the ground.
The entire surrounding scene of the village was fully visible to Bai Mu. He had essentially gained a bird's-eye view, allowing him to see everything clearly without needing to step outside.
Now that he possessed a genuine Mana pool, using the Hand of Walrider was no longer an imnse burden to him. His 235 points of Mana were enough to sustain the Hand of Walrider in flight for about four minutes.
And he did not need the Hand of Walrider to fly for that long. In just a few seconds, he had gained a clear understanding of the surrounding situation.
The good news was that the massive wild boar had not spawned right next to Bai Mu. The bad news was that the village was very small, and the beast was taking imnse pleasure in crushing every single thatched cottage. Hiding inside one would obviously not save him.
Judging by the speed at which it was ramming down the buildings, the house Bai Mu was currently in would suffer the sa fate in two or three minutes at most.
The villagers had all scattered in panic. The place reeked of blood and fire, and Bai Mu's sharp senses even picked up a scent resembling gunpowder.
He was still unsure of the source of this sll. After all, considering the background setting of this Script, it did not seem like a place that possessed firearms. He did not pay it much mind, choosing instead to focus his attention on his current predicant.
Clearly, it was impossible for him to enjoy half a day of buffer ti like he had in the Abandoned City of Doppelgangers.
At this mont, he had two choices. The first was to use the vision from the Guard Mushroom to bypass the massive wild boar and escape the village entirely.
Looking to his right, he spotted deer equipped with saddles. The people here had dosticated herds of deer to use as mounts. Therefore, he could try to catch a fleeing deer, hop onto its back, pick a random direction, and make his getaway.
The second choice was a bit more adventurous. Through his shared vision, he could see that there were still living people in the village. At the ti he entered the Script, the villagers hadn't been completely slaughtered by the wild boar yet. This ant that, right now, he still had a chance to save them.
Doing so might trigger a hidden Side Quest, or perhaps he could squeeze so extra intelligence out of the villagers. They might know the origins of the "Mountain Evil God." However, this was a risky endeavor. Leaning toward a more conservative approach, simply running away would be the most rational choice here.
But Bai Mu had already decided to explore the Script as thoroughly as possible. Information would not only help him clear the Script, but it could also be sold to the newspaper agency as "news." Once he unlocked the "Subscription Column" skill, he would even secure a continuous stream of inco.
Taking a slight risk was an acceptable price to pay.
Furthermore, he knew perfectly well that those people were not rely machine-generated data. Having experienced so many Scripts, he understood that the vast majority of the Scripts in Paradise were real worlds. The people currently being hunted by the Mountain Evil God were vibrant, living lives.
Within the limits of his abilities, he did not want to watch his fellow humans die a tragic death right before his eyes.
Based on the information from the introductory cinematic and the scenes he observed through the Guard Mushroom, these people possessed no special abilities. Their only thod of dealing with the Mountain Evil God was using bows and arrows. In the cinematic, so n had bravely charged at the Mountain Evil God with hoes and swords. In reality, they were just throwing their lives away, failing to stall the beast for even a single second.
This village was filled entirely with ordinary people who relied on hunting and animal husbandry to survive.
And Bai Mu was likely the only person in the village at this mont capable of doing anything about it.
As a Player, he was vastly stronger than these villagers. If there was a single person here who could stop the Mountain Evil God's rampage, it could only be him.
Besides, since the Main Quest was to survive the pursuit of the Mountain Evil God, he would have to face the creature sooner or later. Even if he couldn't kill it, if he couldn't escape from right under its nose, clearing the Script would be nothing more than a pipe dream.
Bai Mu quickly made his decision. He equipped his "Nightwalker Cloak" and stealthily slipped out the door, arriving outside the house.
The black cloak allowed him to seamlessly blend into the night.
He continued to let the "mobile ward" provide him with vision overhead. To minimize his Mana consumption as much as possible, he had to move fast.
After stepping outside, he morized the attire of a nearby corpse. Using "Plainclothes Photography," he transford the clothes under his cloak to match the style. After all, he hadn't been given a detailed identity setting in this Script. Appearing in front of the villagers dressed in bizarre modern clothing would inevitably arouse suspicion.
Soon, he heard a bout of crying coming from the ruins. The massive wild boar seed to have heard the crying as well, and charged straight toward that particular thatched cottage. Amidst the fiery glow, Bai Mu saw two girls huddled together, half-buried under the collapsed, burning debris. They stared in absolute terror at the monstrous boar hurtling toward them.
At this point, Bai Mu didn't have the luxury of overthinking. He had to use every trick at his disposal. He pulled out the Night Vision Camcorder, first attempting to select the Mountain Evil God as his "Model," but the selection failed. The Mountain Evil God's Spirit attribute was higher than his own.
Consequently, he imdiately aid the "Tranquilizer Watch" at the Mountain Evil God. A transparent silver dart shot out, accurately striking the Mountain Evil God in the neck. Although Bai Mu wasn't entirely sure if the thick patch of flesh behind its head counted as a boar's neck, the behemoth indeed collapsed the mont the tranquilizer dart struck. Its sheer montum sent it sliding across the muddy ground, carving a deep trench before finally coming to a halt just shy of bulldozing the thatched cottage.
The darts from the "Tranquilizer Watch" could incapacitate a target for three minutes, but one look was enough to guess that this creature boasted incredibly high resistance to anesthetics. A tranquilizer potent enough to knock a human out cold would be nothing more than a tickle to an elephant.
He had to strike the Mountain Evil God precisely in the neck to trigger the special property of the Tranquilizer Watch, completely bypassing the beast's resistance.
Judging by the results, the tranquilizer dart had successfully taken effect.
Bai Mu silently tucked away the "Butter" in his hand. If the tranquilizer dart had failed, he had fully intended to throw this block of butter—an item that had accompanied him for a long ti—straight at it.
The effect of this item was far more overbearing than the description of the "Tranquilizer Dart." After all, its introduction explicitly stated that as long as it hit the target's head, it could force absolutely any entity to freeze in place for a single second.
