The dic stepped forward with two injector pods. It was the sa dic as before. He stood behind Shadick and his mate, waiting patiently for the Fleet Commander to indicate which one of the prisoners to inject with the serum first. After the Fleet Commander nodded, the dic injected Shadick first, then Carrie.
Everyone in the room watched as Shadick and Carrie slowly began to pale, their faces draining of all color. It took only monts after that for their features to go slack, and their eyes to glaze over. Once the Fleet Commander saw it was ti, he focused on Shadick.
"Shadick, where are the others you are hiding with?" The Fleet Commander started his questioning, eyeing Shadick closely.
Shadick sat quietly in his seat. His eyes were forward in a blank stare, seeing nothing. Without hesitation, Shadick answered. "In the bunker," Shadick stated calmly. There was no emotion in his tone as he spoke. His voice was monotone. His eyes were blank. The serum was in effect.
Still speaking to Shadick, the Fleet Commander continued. "Where is the bunker you have been hiding in?"
Calmly, in a monotone voice, Shadick answered. "The bunker is through a tunnel near the ruins of a ho. It is located underground in a secret tunnel that is connected to my mate's previous ho."
As he was about to ask for clarification from Shadick, the Fleet Commander glanced at Carrie; her face was drained of color. It was flat white, with no color at all. Red blood began to seep out of her eyes and nose. The blood flowed like red tears. The tallic sll of blood began to fill the room.
The Fleet Commander's eyes went wide. "dic, the human needs attention," he stated evenly, trying not to alert Shadick. Even under the influence of truth serum, protecting a fated mate is possible. At least it was between mates of their own kind. He wasn't sure if a mixed couple would be the sa.
The dic, who had been standing against the wall near the wide door, rushed over. His eyes scanned the girl. After seeing Carrie's condition, he stopped in shock, focusing on Carrie's bloody features. His own face drained of all color. He could tell that the situation was dire. "I need her in the d bay," the dic choked out.
Carrie's condition shocked him. There had never been an instance that it affected anyone in such a violent manner. In so, there was an allergic reaction, but it was nothing like this. He wasn't expecting her body to react in the manner that it did. The longer they took releasing her from the chair she was in, the worse she got. Blood was flowing out of her eyes and nose, dripping onto the floor. As he watched, her ears began to fill with blood as well.
The tallic sll around them grew thick. The sll was suffocating.
"Guards, take her to the d bay. Now!" the Fleet Commander ordered; he was trying not to show his own panic. He had not seen this type of reaction either. The guards had stopped, frozen in shock as they looked at the girl.
The Fleet Commander's order pulled them out of their frozen shock, and they rushed toward her to release her.
Before the guards made it to her, she suddenly scread. A long, high-pitched scream of agony. It echoed through the tal cell. The sound pierces their ears. It took everything they had not to cover their ears.
"NOW!" he ordered again. His voice was loud, tinged with rage. It was heard above the screams of the young human. His own panic started to show through.
The guards quickly detached her from the chair and picked her up, running toward the d bay. The dic ran behind them. On his way, his thoughts were focused on what he could do to save her. There were only a few ways that he knew of that might work, but nothing was guaranteed. Her death felt imminent.
The Fleet Commander looked at Shadick and then at the retreating guards who had Shadick's mate. He had to finish; there was nothing he could do. He knew now that he should have listened to Shadick's concerns. Clenching his jaw with regret, he continued with the interrogation.
The guards ran to the d bay as fast as they could. With their burden in their arms, they were careful not to jostle her, afraid it would make the situation worse. Once they reached their destination, the wide door slid open. They quickly entered, then set her carefully on the exam table and stepped back. They wanted to stay out of the way so that the dic could work.
The dic rushed in behind them, grabbed his scanner from the shelf on the wall, and then quickly scanned her body. His thoughts raced, trying to find the best course of action. His face grew paler as he watched the readout on the small screen at the top of the scanner. He knew he had to work fast. She would be dead in monts if he didn't work fast.
The young human woman suddenly stopped screaming. The room beca quiet. A deathly silence slithered around them. The young woman suddenly started shaking as if having a seizure, flopping around like a fish out of water. Tinted green foam mixed with human-red blood bubbled out of her mouth. The dic picked up a cloth and quickly wiped it away, then placed a soft mouth guard in her mouth, afraid she would bite her tongue.
He knew now that the priority was to clean the serum out of her bloodstream.
Rushing to a shelving unit, the dic pulled a device off one of the shelves. It was a small cube. In the back of it was a cord to attach the power supply. In the front were several ports for attaching tubing or other attachnts. A small button was on the top to activate it.
The dic quickly plugged the device into a wall unit. Taking a coil of narrow, clear tubing off a nearby shelf, he attached a needle to one end of the long tube. The other end of the narrow tubing, he shoved into one of the ports at the front of the device.
Once the device was ready, he carefully pushed the needle into an artery in her neck. The cube device was now attached to Carrie as well as the wall.
Pressing the small button on the top of the cube, the device turned on. A rhythmic sound softly echoed through the room.
He scanned her body again with his hand-held scanner, while the machine began to work. It humd softly as it pumped the serum out of her blood. He kept one hand on the off button of the machine in case he needed to turn it off quickly.
He didn't understand human physiology. He had assud that if the two races were compatible, they would be nearly the sa. He was wrong.
The guards watched as the dic worked; their eyes kept going to the young girl. "What are you doing to her?" one of the guards asked the dic. His tone was solemn.
"Trying to save her life," the dic stated, his jaw clenched. "This device is taking the serum out of her bloodstream. The injection wasn't compatible with her."
The other guard looked at his partner, then at the dic. "And the child in her?" he asked quietly. He sounded worried. Children of their kind were hard to co by. It sotis took decades for their own kind. The fact that the human girl carried one was a miracle in their eyes. It also gave them hope that they would find their own mate and have a child of their own.
"I don't know yet," he stated, then sighed. "If she is saved, it's possible the child will also be. It is also possible that the baby is already gone."
There was silence in the room as the dic worked. Only the sounds of the machines could be heard. The soft rhythmic sound of the pump echoed through the small room.
The wall device started beeping, indicating her blood had been cleaned. The dic pressed the button to turn off the machine, and then carefully detached the needle from her artery. After picking up his scanner, he scanned her body again, then hovered over her abdon, and watched the small readout on the device.
At the sa mont the results revealed themselves, the d bay door slid open, and the Fleet Commander walked in, his features grim. "Will she recover?" he asked the dic imdiately. Even he couldn't hide his worry.
The dic looked up at his Fleet Commander. "She will recover," he stated evenly. "But the fetus is dead. The serum killed the child. She is no longer pregnant."
The Fleet Commander paled, nodded, then exited the d bay; the door sliding smoothly closed behind him.
