Recap of Chapter 61: The Mistress’s Gambit

The Trial ended, but the Mistress was far from done. She lured Jemil and his wives into a feast hall dripping with temptation—food, wine, and whispered truths ant to divide them. Each wife was tested: Nyssa’s laughter stripped to reveal her hidden fear, Kaelina’s pride challenged with whispers of being replaced, and Lyra’s fire stoked with jealousy. The golden curse on Jemil burned visibly, binding him tighter to the Mistress’s sches. Though he resisted her poison words, the cracks in their unity deepened.

And the Mistress? She wasn’t satisfied. She was just getting started.

Main Story

The golden chandeliers dimd until the feast hall was no longer a place of light and splendor, but a stage of shadow. Plates dulled, food rotted, and wine soured, the illusion crumbling like ash.

The Mistress rose from her throne. Her chains stirred like serpents, coiling across the marble floor, slithering toward the table where Jemil and his wives sat.

"No more masks. No more feasting," she whispered. "It’s ti we taste the truth."

The chains struck.

One lashed toward Lyra, wrapping her wrist. She ignited instantly, fire roaring across her body, but the tal did not lt. Instead, her flas bent inward, pulled tight until they threatened to burn her from within. She gasped, eyes blazing, trying to hold the inferno back.

"Lyra!" Jemil surged forward, the golden curse sparking violently across his chest.

Another chain wrapped Kaelina’s sword arm, forcing her blade against the table. She resisted, muscles straining, but the chain twisted until her knuckles turned white. "You—will—not—bend !" she snarled, but the Mistress’s laughter drowned her out.

Nyssa was next. A chain wound like a snake around her throat, not choking—but whispering. Each coil shimred with phantom illusions, replaying monts of her past in cruel fragnts: laughter masking fear, smiles hiding tears. She shook her head violently, illusions scattering across the hall in wild, uncontrolled bursts.

"Stop it!" Jemil’s voice cracked, curse-light searing. He gripped one of the chains barehanded. It burned, but he held tight, golden sparks bleeding from his palm.

The Mistress leaned forward, eyes gleaming. "Do you see, Chainbreaker? It isn’t I who bind them. It’s you. Their chains exist because they chose you. Their jealousy, their fear, their rage—all shackles forged by love."

The curse flared brighter across Jemil’s chest and arms, as though agreeing. The golden links seed to etch deeper into his skin, each heartbeat hamring them tighter.

"Jemil..." Lyra’s voice was raw, her flas collapsing inward. "If you... burn for soone else... would I even matter?"

"Don’t you dare think that," Jemil growled, pulling harder against the chain.

Kaelina’s teeth clenched. Her sword trembled under the Mistress’s binding. "If... if I fall... you’ll just lean on another, won’t you? Soone stronger. Soone more worthy."

Jemil’s breath hitched. "Kaelina, stop—"

Nyssa gasped as the chain tightened. "Maybe... maybe he only keeps because I make him laugh. Because I hide what I am. If he saw the real ..." Her voice broke. "Would you still want ?"

The chains pulled all three won down, forcing them closer to the table, to the golden curse blazing from Jemil’s chest.

The Mistress spread her arms, radiant in victory. "Do you see? One by one, their hearts betray them. Their chains tighten. And when they break... so will you."

Jemil’s knees buckled. The curse burned hotter than ever, golden fire clawing up his throat. He wanted to scream, to rage, to tear the chains apart—but the truth stung. The Mistress wasn’t lying. His wives’ fears were real. Their doubts, their insecurities, all tied to him.

His fault.

Unless...

"No."

The word ripped from his throat like steel tearing through stone. His wives lifted their heads weakly, chains grinding into their flesh, eyes flicking toward him.

Jemil stood tall, golden curse blazing across his entire body now, brighter than the Mistress’s chains. His voice cut through her laughter, steady and fierce.

"You’re wrong."

The Mistress tilted her head. "Oh?"

"They don’t love because they’re chained. They’re chained because they chose —again and again. Not because they’re weak, but because they’re strong enough to risk it. Strong enough to fight for it."

He gripped the chain on his arm until his skin tore. Golden blood sizzled against the links. "And if chains co from love, then I’ll bear them. All of them. For every one of them."

The hall shuddered. The chains binding Lyra, Kaelina, and Nyssa quivered, cracks running along their golden surfaces. Lyra’s flas burst outward, searing through her bindings. Kaelina roared, her blade shattering the tal holding it down. Nyssa’s illusions flared bright, no longer scattered, but weaving into a sharp, unified shield that cut the chain from her throat.

The three wives collapsed against Jemil, but the light in their eyes was not despair—it was trust.

The Mistress’s smile faltered, just slightly. "Interesting..."

The feast hall’s shadows deepened. The chains withdrew, not in defeat, but in preparation. Her voice dripped with promise.

"Then let us see... how much weight your heart can truly bear."

And with that, the entire hall split open, unraveling into a battlefield of endless chains stretching into the void.

The Mistress had more to show.
