Michael's eyes brimd with power and greed and the somber expression on his face told Nika he wasn't bluffing. He did want to beco the strongest being in the universe by killing the gods, but Nika did not care about his reasoning or the cause of his desire. Power corrupting hunters was more common than the Cryptid hunting agency liked to admit, but Nika working on the private field for so long allowed her to see it first hand more tis than she could count.
"Whatever, as long as you can kick their butts I could care less...," Nika hinting that she was alright with Hathaway killing Tate in such a soft voice was like the calm before the storm. "but you killed our friend and that's sothing I can't allow!"
Michael killing Tate was like pushing the pause button on the skirmish as everyone witnessed it and then remained quiet. On the god's side it was due to the absolute ridiculousness of hunters killing a vessel of the gods. Overpowering a god wasn't impossible or even difficult in so cases, but to actually kill a human possessed by a god was beyond sacrilege.
On the Dungeon Raider's side it was the ultimate offense, not just because Tate was Bella's brother but because he was Uriel's friend and was well liked by everyone. His rigid sense of duty and his tough character made him a reliable ally, though it was precisely that fact what ended up turning Tate into the perfect vessel for Ares.
"He was one of us..." dusa let go of Athena whom she had been pounding with her fists until the goddess blood pooled on the ground. dusa's crimson eyes glimred through the dust creating the optical illusion of to bright crosses drawing near to Michael.
"He was always nice to us. Now I'm very angry." Although Luna usually didn't show her emotions, especially when she was in her lycanthrope form, she turned back into a human to spell them in a clear voice.
To Michael who rely saw the chance of becoming stronger and took it without sparing a second thought to consequences he was now starting to second guess if he did the right thing. However, after killing Ares vessel he beca more powerful than he could have ever imagined which was saying a lot from soone who had almost reached the power level of a holy rank hunter whilst still being a heavenly rank hunter.
He knew himself to be stronger than each of the hunters present, but he was intimidated by Luna's childish figure, dusa's glimring eyes and the shadows growing from every physical object in the vicinity.
The first one to co at him was dusa, who liked to open fights with a powerful kick that more often than not also ended the fights. Her powerful kick was blocked effortlessly by Michael's skill which was called automatic defense and allowed his body to defend in the most efficient way possible without even sparing a thought.
"Co on, guys, I'm on your side." He said as he took a step back which dusa took as a chance to follow with a spinning kick that Michael almost couldn't block. Blocking two consecutive strikes of that caliber gave Michael the confidence to fight against everyone on his own, but just another step back proved him just how wrong he was because he bumped onto Nika who used shadows to constrain him before stabbing him in the back without hesitation.
Luna's innocent face was the last thing Michael Hathaway saw unable to even notice who of them killed him. His consciousness faded for a second, but when he ca to his senses he saw his own body into third person.
"It's a sha to have died without accomplishing my duty, but at least I can rest knowing I did my best." He said without a hint of regret for his actions or any hostility to the ones who killed him. If anything, he wished he could have at least killed a couple more gods to make things easier for the Dungeon Raiders as the survival of humanity as a species now rested on their backs.
"That was pretty dumb." Uriel said also in a spiritual form as his body was being destroyed around five tis each second.
"Mister Sage? You're dead too? What's going to happen now?"
"Not really, they think they can kill and I wished they could, but they can't," Uriel said with a wry smile, not that it showed since his physical body did not exist at that mont. "see that ambulance? Talk to the driver and tell him you're ready to move on. He'll get you where you need to be."
"You're not coming?"
"Like I said, I can't die." Uriel replied.
"Hold on a second, are you actually immortal?"
"Pretty impressive for a teaching assistant, huh."
"That's one way to put it," Hathaway pondered, then asked. "is there a chance for not to die right now?"
"I really wouldn't recomnd it," Uriel said wishing he could shrug his shoulders. "your body is mangled and cannot support life anymore. Going back to a body like that would send you right back here, your mind is not strong enough to refuse to die. Even if you want to live, deep down your mind already gave up and wants to rest."
"But it's too early for , I can still help your friends!"
"You did enough already." Tate's clear voice declared.
"I'm sorry, but..."
"It's alright, it was my own weakness what got . I didn't know what I was getting myself into when that bastard offered power, but don't worry, he'll get what's coming to him."
"I already killed him."
"You wish, if it was that easy I would have taken care of them already." Uriel grunted.
"Yeah right, you might be immortal, but you can't possibly think you can defeat them." Michael scoffed in response, but reality was different.
Uriel didn't doubt for a second that he could kill all the people possessed by gods, but dusa begged him not to kill her grandfather and although Hazel was a stuck up wannabe hero, Uriel would have preferred not to kill her. Tate's demise was a sha and Uriel wished he could have lived, but just as Tate admitted it was the consequence of his own decision making and there was nothing to do about it, but the sa didn't apply to the other victims of the gods.
"If you kill them you are only destroying their physical form, the only thing you'll achieve is to send the gods back to their domains where they would be safe and will probably co back again the minute they find another soul dumb enough to take their deal. No offense, Tate."
"None taken." Tate replied too fast.
"In other words, they can't be killed."
"I wonder..." Uriel said pensively as his mind was now of a spiritual nature rather than the physical brain which could be influenced by chemicals and human emotion far more than by reason.
"You're not thinking what I think..." Michael said in a disbelieving voice and though Tate did not know what they were talking about he spoke without sparing a thought.
"I'm in."
"I haven't even said what I was thinking, but alright." Uriel gestured at Charon, which obviously wasn't effective due to him being a detached consciousness. When that didn't work he whistled, which surprisingly did work.
"You're finally ready to move on?" Charon asked with hope that was crushed the mont Uriel continued.
"Take us to the Olimpieion," Uriel ordered. "It's ti we take the fight to them."
"A trip down there is going to cost you." Charon smiled the kind of smile Uriel hated the most, the smile of soone who was about to make it big at his expense. Before they could seal the deal, however, sothing interesting happened in the battlefield sothing that may have seed insignificant but actually made the difference.
Zeus lightning strike fizzled out which allowed Uriel to regenerate completely.
The cause, albeit unimportant at the mont, would later be described as the corner stone of human victory and the one behind it was no one but Mark who had just convinced the entire human race to stop praying for the gods to win and to root for the Dungeon Raiders instead.
"Do you know what ti it is?" Uriel smiled at Zeus, then took out his sword and pointed it at the sky catching a lightning bolt on the spot. "it's payback ti."
"Oh, my god, so cringe." Nika shook her head to which Luna added.
"So dramatic." And lastly, dusa shrieked.
"So cool!"
Zeus had no ti to react to the lightning bolt Uriel hurled his way, nor did he have the presence of mind to even block the fist that struck his face and for one reason. A strange feeling traversed his body, it was an alien sensation that he knew he had experienced soti in a past so distant he had forgotten what its na was, but it was uncomfortable and it filled his mind.
It was pain, the kind of pain only a human could experience.
