"Geez! Why didn't I notice it before? It's just like when he attempted to peek on Nika while she was taking a shower. He gave tickets for an auction on rare electronic parts, but it turned out to be a garage sale. He just wanted out of the HQ!"
"I rember that ti, he said there was a cryptid outside but it ended up being a weird neighbor. I, uhm... Almost dissected him before realizing his anatomy was nothing exceptional, he just suffered from a bad case of acne." Luna said in a monotone bringing shivers to Uriel who never heard that story before.
Despite knowing her, he was still baffled when she ntioned 'almost dissecting' soone casually as if it was nothing but a small mistake.
"So, he just wanted you to stay clear of the headquarters in order to peek on Nika? What happened after that?"
"Nika caught him red handed and kicked his ass," dusa shrugged and then explained. "Back then we didn't know heavenly rank hunters had flux perception.
The casual tone of their conversation was nothing unusual, if not for the fact that they just discovered a horror rank cryptid passing their forr friend and discussed things openly in front of it.
"Do you think you can ignore like this without any consequences?" Sam's eyes glead in a bright golden light.
"Not now, we're busy... I'll be with you in just a minute." Luna's seemingly inexpressive face and just a few words were all it took for the cryptid to quite literally, shrink in its own skin. Sothing about her was deeply unsettling, even for an ancient cryptid that would bring nightmares to most hunters.
"If this is the case, then we should go back to the headquarters." dusa proposed, but Uriel quickly refuted.
"I don't think it's that simple, it's not just about us. There must be a reason why he decided to involve two holy rank hunters in his plan. With Water warlock on his side he might be immortal, but he's not as strong as to face two holy rank hunters at the sa ti." Uriel explained his reasoning, though he had no clue as to what could Sam possibly be after.
"I don't know about Mister Scofield, but uncle Jon always brings a lot of valuable things with him when he travels." dusa said with a dubious tone of voice that finally got the Sam copycat to snap.
"Now you're just being disrespectful. He said I can't kill you, but he said nothing about teaching you a lesson." Sam or rather, the cryptid mimicking Sam's appearance, said and proceeded to channel a vast amount of flux energy.
The imnse pressure emitted by the cryptid was enough to cut the conversation short and it forced the three hunters to finally face their enemy. The first one to move was Luna, who kept enough of her flux energy at the ready in order to shapeshift in a second and she leapt on top of the cryptid they now knew was the horror level skinwalkers.
With Sam's appearance, the cryptid was also able to copy his skills and by activating Sam's celerity it was able to dodge Luna quite easily, though it didn't expect the impossibly high kick to the face it received just when it thought it was safe.
Moving like that was impossible even for hunters without the proper training, but dusa was a very killed martial artist that could perform such movents even without a trait.
"How did you do that with that blindfold on!?" The cryptid asked with half of Sam's face and the other half with peeled skin that revealed the face of a native arican woman.
"In case you don't get it yet, we are the ones asking questions here and we'll get you to talk one way or the other." Uriel said pretending he wasn't shocked by dusa's powerful display.
He knew it better than Luna who remained as an ascended, but the mystical sense only allowed hunters to know more or less the general direction of a flux signature and he couldn't dream of ever hitting soone moving as fast as that cryptid with his eyes closed.
Her feat was even more impressive considering how she had been bumping and stumbling into anything and everything leading to more than a few embarrassing monts.
"Do your worst," the cryptid spat on the ground, now displaying what they assud was their original appearance as a native arican young woman. "I can't even feel pain while I'm in my true form and there's nothing you can do to he can't do worse." Its cocky smile beca wider and wider, until its head seemingly snapped in a monstrous laughter.
Contrary to its expectations, no one reacted in fear. Instead, Luna shifted back into a human as the sound of a soft cackle erged in the background.
"Kukukuku" Luna's eyes glead with passion as she stared at the cryptid with boundless curiosity.
"I have enough silver to make you speak like a parrot, but Luna would never forgive if I ssed with her 'sample' before she got to play with it." Uriel said with a devious tone of voice while looking he cryptid on the eye until a soft tug on his sleeve inford him he made a critical mistake.
"Uhm..." Luna mumbled.
"I'm sorry Luna, I ant to say 'Experint with', not playing." While Uriel apologized to Luna for disrespecting her field of study, dusa whispered a few words behind the cryptid.
"He actually ant it. I've seen cryptids taking their own life after less than a minute of Luna playing with them."
Suddenly, getting killed by Sam or even tortured by him wasn't as dreadful as she first thought it was. It took her but a glance to realize they weren't lying and that the two psychopaths in front of her were more than able to stomach torturing her until they extracted any information they wanted, but even if she caved she doubted they would let her go.
"I need so assurance that you'll let go after I tell you what I know." The cryptid finally broke under he threat of being dissected or worse. The fact that she didn't know what did they an by 'playing' had a greater impact than anything they could have thought to threaten her with.
"I knew you were smart, Nika cooperated with a skinwalker in the past... Or was it a doppelganger?" Uriel asked himself and then continued. "But that doesn't an we trust you. I think we should let Luna play... I an, experint for a little while and we'll figure things in the way."
"Agreed." Luna cackled so more as she drew closer to the terrified skinwalker.
"I'll talk! Please, don't let her co near !" The skinwalker sounded as though she was crying, but her true face was incapable of shedding any tears.
"What does Sam want?" Uriel glared at the cryptid who remained silent for a few seconds.
"He doesn't want anything." The cryptid finally replied.
"Luna..." Uriel nodded at the tiny huntress who took another step forward. Luna's werewolf form was nothing unusual to the skinwalker who was accustod to unsightly creatures of all sizes and shapes, but her small hands and innocent looking face filled her with terror.
"I'm telling the truth! He doesn't want anything because he already has everything he wanted, you're too late!" The cryptid's voice echoed in the now ruinous city, leaving the hunters petrified for a few seconds. "He built himself a dungeon, a disruptor and all the structures needed to funnel all the flux energy from the outside. He's not even in this city anymore!"
"Uriel, if what that thing says is true, then it ans Sam is just ssing with our heads. If he's not here anymore..." dusa began speaking but then covered her mouth when she realized sothing she had missed. "What do you an channel the flux energy from the outside?"
"Uhm... I'll explain. When cryptids or humans die, a small portion of flux is released on the surroundings and..."
"I know that, Luna." dusa muttered, but then Uriel continued.
"You don't get it, cryptids or humans..." Uriel emphasized the last part.
"No way, there's no way Sam would do sothing so cruel!" dusa cried, but she wasn't alone. Uriel and Luna joined her in her tears in spite of their difficulties to deal with emotions.
A city disappearing and their people dying ant nothing to them as long as their friends were fine, but just the thought of Sam sacrificing countless lives just to hoard the flux energy made them sick to their stomachs.
It was an unforgivable sin beyond anything they could have ever imagined and the worst part was that the only reason why Sam did it was in order to beco stronger.
"I guess he's a holy rank hunter now..." Uriel let out in a voice so faint it was barely heard by his friends.
