After calling the code black over the phone, the floor was soon filled with staff mbers. From guards to cleaning staff, they imdiately fulfilled their duties with professionalism and they didn't seem fazed by the grotesque cri scene in the examination room.
Uriel, didn't linger to even attempt to tell whether they were humans, cryptids or skinwalkers, all he needed to know was that they were all in on it. Instead of pointlessly trying to further his investigation, he picked the girl and went down the stairs trying not to shake her too much since she was badly injured.
At so point she stopped crying which led Uriel to believe she was unconscious, but that wasn't the case. Even after all she went through, now that Uriel took care of the doctor she felt safe enough to stop worrying about her life and focusing on sothing even more important to her.
"He didn't..." She muttered softly while hanging loose on Uriel's arms.
"It's fine, you don't need to tell . Even if he didn't act like one, he was human." He replied, assuming that she also suspected she might bring an abomination into the world.
"I... I just don't want you to think... Nevermind." She mumbled so more before falling silent. As much as she wanted to keep her image and reputation as clean as possible, the pain from the broken bones was almost unbearable and they were still inside the hostile building.
The whole place seed to have been built with the sole purpose of making it difficult for people to escape. Even the ergency stairs which were supposed to allow a fast escape route only allowed them to go down a single floor and then they had to walk across the room to keep going down.
Every floor they passed increased the chances of them getting caught, but Uriel thought it was less risky to get caught in the stairs where he was able to move freely rather than inside the elevator. Just thinking about being trapped in an alloy cage with a cryptid made him shiver.
He was aware that even though he now was a heavenly rank hunter it'd be impossible for him to fight in close quarters against an entity rank cryptid with a wounded girl on his arms.
The descend was slow, but calling the code black over the phone turned out to be the right decision as it caused a distraction big enough for them to go unnoticed despite their suspicious appearance and as soon as they were outside the hospital they were finally able to catch their breath.
As usual, though, things didn't go as easily as Uriel hoped. It was sothing Uriel was already expecting, but completely forgot when he beca enraged at the human doctor.
"No way, it's past curfew..." The girl let out with a jagged breath, which Uriel recognized to be a sign of a punctured lung, the sa kind of injury dusa suffered during their incursion on the lost city. Had Beth been a heavenly rank hunter, she would have been fine on her own, but Uriel was able to tell she was at most at the ascended level which could only an one thing:
"You need dical treatnt," He said softly, but no matter how llow his voice was, the poor girl's eyes turned white in horror. "I'm not taking you back inside, but you do need a dic."
Uriel pondered his possibilities which included summoning he jaguar and making a run for it and even knocking on a random door and crossing his fingers it was a person who opened. In the end, both alternatives were too risky and he discarded them both.
There was also the possibility of trying to save her on his own, but while it was true that he took so of Professor Lamar's classes, the only thing he learned about dicine was how little he knew about it.
Thanks to his experience and the books he read when he tried to catch up to his classmates he was now able to perform first aids, but that was miles away from performing the surgery the girl needed. This led him to an unsavory conclusion, he needed help.
He took out his smartphone and called the man who was ultimately responsible for all the events that transpired to let him know of the situation.
"That bad, huh?" The head of the rangers replied over the phone after Uriel put him up to date.
"Will you send help or not?"
"Sorry kiddo, but my hands are tied at the mont. I'm afraid you'll have to drop your asset and go on your way."
"But you sent on this stupid assignnt! If it wasn't for that, nothing would have happened to these kids!"
"I know I asked you for this favor and if it was you the one who needed evac, I'd make sure you get the help you need.. But there's nothing I can do for a random girl you picked up."
"You bastard! Rember this the next ti you want to ask sothing of ." Uriel hung the phone with a snarl and the girl imdiately realized the severity of their situation.
"Just leave in a safe place, but please don't take back there." Beth cried.
"I said it already, but you won't get better on your own. Darn it! If Luna was here..." Uriel attempted to rember what did Luna do to treat dusa, but he didn't get to see the procedure to keep both Sam and him from seeing dusa's naked body. It was the right thing to do and dusa was thankful to Luna for being considerate, which was pretty strange coming from her.
But Uriel inwardly cursed for not even asking her how to perform the surgery.
All he rembered was that she asked for a plastic tube and a sharp knife, the first was easy to procure in his souvenir shop and he always carried a knife on him.
"Alright, don't worry, I'll take you sowhere safe and I'll take care of this." Uriel said and the girl just nodded. Breathing beca more difficult for her each passing minute and It also didn't help that Uriel decided to take her to the west district which was pretty far. But the reason for thay decision was obvious, it was the only district not directly under hybrid control.
After being carried for a few minutes she wasn't so sure if she was going to make it through the night anymore.
Uriel placed her on the ground on a secluded place and grabbed from his trait what he thought he needed to perform the surgery, but when the ti ca to remove the sheet that covered the girl, Beth flinched.
"I'm trying to help you." Uriel reassured.
"I don't want you to see like this." She replied blushing like a, well, like a schoolgirl.
"You were hostile to at every chance you got and now you're blushing. I can assure you, there's nothing beneath that sheet that I want to see," He tried to reason with her, but failed completely to understand her thinking. Instead of helping his case, Beth only beca more embarrassed which led him to continue.
"You may be a year younger than , but now you're a hunter you can't act like a child anymore. You need to fight to live!"
"But I fought and I lost! Just let die with dignity."
"Dignity!? What dignity is there in dying? I've seen a lot of people die and let tell you, it's never pretty. Look around you!" Uriel raised his voice pointing at their surroundings to show the girl there wasn't any dignity to begin with. It was just a random dark alley in the west slums, but the int he wanted to make vanished as soon as he realized there was soone looking directly at them.
"What do we have here?" An intense voice echoed in the alley. There wasn't any warmth coming from that voice, but it felt sowhat familiar.
"Miss... Dragonfang?" Uriel had to blink a couple tis just to make sure he wasn't hallucinating, but then he shook his head. "There's no chance it's you, I heard the company went down. You must be a skinwalkers planted to inform Sam of my movents."
"Why would I tell him anything? That jerk won't even answer my calls now that he's a bigshot. The one I am going to call is dusa, she's going to love to hear what I have to say." Miss Dragonfang grinned evily. Only then did Uriel realize that what he thought was a clear attempt to save the girl's life, might have actually co off as him getting close with a woman. One that wasn't dusa.
"This isn't what it seems..." Uriel muttered, though Miss Dragonfang limited herself to glare at his hand, which was still posed on the sheets that covered Beth.
"Why is it they always say that? I thought soone as smart as you would be more creative." Miss Dragonfang laughed, but her laugh didn't carry to her eyes. There was sothing unsettling about her, but Uriel couldn't figure out what exactly it was that bothered him so much until a grim silent filled the night streets of the random alley in the slums and he finally realized what it was.
