Chapter 28: Awkward Moment! Huo Ling’er Showing Her Fangs!
Chen Xuan felt the astonished gazes of the other Peak Masters piercing his back. It took every ounce of his self-control to keep a straight face.
Especially when he sensed the killing intent coming from one particular seat, he couldn’t help but inwardly curse at Huo Ling’er, wondering what she was thinking.
At the same time, he was genuinely puzzled.
Why was he so angry?
Even though Huo Ling’er had used some... unorthodox methods to secure her victory, more outrageous events ought to have taken place in the previous competitions.
Why did Senior Brother Chu look ready to swallow him alive?
Tang Yuechen, sitting beside him, seemed to sense his confusion.
Her lips didn’t move, but her teasing voice echoed directly in his mind via divine sense transmission.
"The boy your disciple just defeated is Chu Wuhao’s nephew. He is the only son of his late brother."
A sly, gossipy smile tugged at the corner of her mouth as she continued.
"Chu Wuhao accepted him as an adopted son not long after his father’s death. Their relationship has always been exceptionally close."
"So close, in fact, that there are rumors that the boy may be his actual son!"
Tang Yuechen used the word "rumor" to suggest that this was not confirmed.
Yet, the fact that she mentioned it made it clear that this accusation was far from baseless. At least, it had plenty of basis.
’Damn it!’ Chen Xuan grumbled inwardly.
’You had an affair with your sister-in-law, and now you have the nerve to point your fingers at me?’
’Hypocrite!’ he cursed.
Still, under the scrutinizing eyes of the other Peak Masters, he knew he had to explain his disciple’s behavior.
But before he could speak, a sharp voice cut him off.
It was the cold, aloof female Peak Master who had previously complained about the disciples’ immaturity.
As she watched Huo Ling’er kick her opponent’s groin and the pathetic appearance of her victim as he slammed onto the ground, her icy facade melted into absolute delight.
Clap! Clap!
"That’s great! This is exactly how a disciple of the Jade Pure Sect should behave in combat!"
"Back in my day, which one of today’s so-called ’experts’ did not suffer in my hands and had to respectfully call me Senior Sister?" she boasted.
She then looked at Chen Xuan, her eyes filled with newfound respect.
"Junior Brother Chen, you previously mentioned that you were unfit to guide disciples, and I almost believed you. Today, I see that you were merely being humble at the time."
"If only you were a woman, the gates of the Ice Phoenix Peak would have been wide open for you," the cold Peak Master sighed.
Her sincere praise and the predatory glint in her eyes that looked ready to devour him silenced Chen Xuan.
But he quickly regained his composure and shook his head.
"Senior Sister, Senior Brothers, you’re all mistaken," he explained, his voice calm and earnest. "This was merely an unfortunate accident. My disciple is pure and innocent, completely ignorant of the world."
"She was sheltered her whole life and doesn’t understand the differences between men and women. She merely targeted that place in panic. Please forgive her transgression."
Chen Xuan’s face remained straight as his gaze swept across the hall, his eyes clear and unblinking.
His flawless delivery actually managed to convince a few of the Peak Masters.
But in the very next second, the atmosphere in the hall shifted. Everyone’s gaze turned slightly odd.
Chen Xuan sensed the sudden change, though he didn’t understand where it came from.
Just as he was puzzling over it, a low, suppressed laughter rang out beside him.
"Junior Brother Chen, you might want to take a look." Tang Yuechen whispered, pointing down at the arena.
Chen Xuan traced the line of her finger.
The moment he saw what she was pointing at, his face darkened.
--
While the farce in the hall continued, the challenges in the arenas raged on.
To the surprise of many, the twelve defenders hand-picked by the Peaks had yet to be dethroned from their positions.
Though they had endured multiple waves of challengers, they showed no signs of fatigue.
If anything, as their combat experience grew richer, the gap between them and the ordinary disciples widened instead of narrowing.
Only three defenders didn’t have the chance to temper themselves.
Situ Yang, Mu Chen... and Huo Ling’er.
The former two were expected.
But the third...
"This is Senior Brother Yang! Elder Yang’s son!" a disciple gasped, staring in horror at the latest victim being dragged away from Huo Ling’er’s arena.
"Elder Yang is going to be furious. Their family lineage was just cut off!"
The disciple glanced up at the Elders’ seats, only to see a middle-aged man gripping his armrest, his face pale with fury.
But before the gossip could continue, a sudden shout from the crowd attracted everyone’s attention.
"Look! A female disciple is taking the initiative to challenge the demoness!"
"It’s Senior Sister Peng! She has always claimed to be the most beautiful among the new disciples and has countless admirers, men and women alike!"
"I heard that a Junior Sister once criticized her looks in private, only to wake up in a manure pit the next morning. She’s ruthless!"
"Oh no! Senior Sister Peng!" Another voice screamed before the first had even finished speaking.
The crowd’s eyes snapped back to the arena, just in time to catch the airborne figure of a girl being tossed off the stage.
The battle had ended the moment it began.
It was only when "Senior Sister Peng" crashed to the ground and her face was revealed that the crowd realized that Huo Ling’er was far more insidious than they ever imagined.
Several deep, bleeding scratches could be seen on "Senior Sister Peng’s" previously flawless face, looking nearly impossible to heal.
Unless a great expert intervened within the next few hours, this graceful fairy would remain disfigured for the rest of her life.
This gruesome sight instantly shattered the courage of the few daring female disciples who had been planning to challenge her.
They had previously assumed that Huo Ling’er’s tactics only worked on men. However, "Senior Sister Peng’s" tragic fate proved that the demoness was equally terrifying, if not even more, when dealing with women.
Instantly, the area around Huo Ling’er’s arena cleared. In the minds of the disciples, her threat level had far surpassed Situ Yang and Mu Chen.
