Chapter 1549: Chapter 1487: Not the Emperor Yan

After sending everyone away, Ah Jiu and Yan Er spoke in the study.

"Why have you co?" Ah Jiu asked Yan Er with a sidelong glance, "Don’t tell

it’s because you’re especially fond of Changan. The diplomatic mission has been prepared for a long ti, and I’ve never heard you say you wanted to co."

"The Empress Dowager sent ," Yan Er replied.

Ah Jiu was taken aback. "Royal Mother?"

Yan Er nodded and said, "Her Majesty knows your intentions. She fears that you might cause a scene that’s unbecoming and asked

to persuade you not to embarrass our Beiyan."

Ah Jiu rolled his eyes, looking as if he didn’t believe a word.

"Why I have co is not important. I certainly won’t harm Beiyan’s interests. Maybe I’ll even help you successfully win the Princess Consort," Yan Er said. "But you, what’s with this assassination matter? Do you have any leads?"

Ah Jiu clenched his fist, rubbing his thumb against his lips. "We’ve roughly gone through the leads in Nanyue. Anyone with whom I’ve had past disputes has shown no unusual activity."

At that ti, when I traveled to the Gobi Beach, the Sixth Prince was scheming behind the scenes. But after his plan failed, he didn’t move again. Especially now, when Beiyan and Nanyue are about to start trading, he’s as quiet as a quail.

"If it’s not Nanyue, then it’s Beiyan."

Ah Jiu pursed his lips. "Beiyan..."

"You can’t possibly say you’ve not gotten in anyone’s way in Beiyan, can you?" Yan Er laughed scornfully at him.

Indeed, that was what Ah Jiu thought.

"My prince, you are the favored one by heaven, and more importantly, the Empress Dowager’s legitimate son. The other one is just the stepson!"

"Yan San, watch your words!" Ah Jiu’s handso face darkened slightly.

Yan Er puckered his lips and said, "If you really treat him as a kind and congenial older brother, then you must be extrely lucky to have survived this long. How do you know if he’s not pretending you’re an innocent younger brother?"

Ah Jiu pressed his lips together. "I’ve done nothing."

"Yes, you have done nothing, but don’t forget, even a lamb grows up. Is a mature lamb still just a lamb? Does he see you as a wolf or a sheep?" Yan Er said.

Ah Jiu choked for a mont, a sudden flare of anger rising.

"It’s not him."

Forcing down the anger, Ah Jiu took a deep breath. "It wasn’t his order."

"You still trust him."

Ah Jiu shook his head. "It’s not a matter of trust; if he made a move, it would surely be a dead end."

Yan Er raised an eyebrow.

"He’s been in that position for twenty years, his seat more stable than ever. Those who opposed him have been long dead. His loyal followers, aside from the visible ones, include those we cannot see, unknown to both you and ." Ah Jiu rose, stood by the window, and said with his hands behind his back, "As an emperor, and an ambitious one at that, he has plenty of cards to play for his survival, besides the Dragon Raging Guard and the Shadow Watch. To kill , he wouldn’t need to spend a silver on hiring Jianghu people."

As a well-entrenched emperor, his resources are vast; there’s no need to resort to employing so Jianghu assassin, and lose respect!

Emperor Yan is a proud emperor; he cannot afford such disgrace.

If Emperor Yan wanted to kill him, there would be many inescapable traps.

"If it’s not him, then who?" Yan Er couldn’t figure it out after hearing him out.

Ah Jiu fell silent, staring out the window as a few leaves fell.

"For every cause, there is an effect. As you said, soone must consider

an obstacle to the point of wanting

dead," Ah Jiu extended his hand out the window, catching a withered leaf, and crushed it in his palm.

He looked at the crushed leaf in his hand. "A ghost cannot stand sunlight. As for a human, they will eventually show themselves!"
