Chapter 1149: Chapter 1147: Departure
Having had an unpleasant encounter with Old Lady Zhou, Madam Zhou initially planned to leave after lunch. However, Zhou Xueli and his wife persuaded her to stay. They reasoned that traveling slowly could only take her to an inn in town, so why not stay at ho for the night?
Seeing the couple’s earnest request, Madam Zhou thought that once she left, she might not have the chance to return, so she agreed to stay.
To accommodate her overnight stay, the servants prepared the guest room under Lady Liang’s leadership.
It was already Early Sumr, and the days were long. After a brief nap at noon, Madam Zhou, accompanied by Qiu Xiang and Purple Jade, strolled through the village, visiting her old ho for a look.
But standing in front of a pile of ruins, Madam Zhou was stunned. What happened? Why was it burned down?
"In the past, Wufu and I lived here, how did it get burned down?" Madam Zhou asked in astonishnt.
Qiu Xiang and Purple Jade surveyed the area; the environnt was truly poor. The mother and daughter lived in such a remote mountain area. If Wufu hadn’t had abilities, they could have been consud with nothing left.
Little did they know, the current Wufu had a different spirit. The forr Wufu had long departed this world, having died when accidentally pushed down by her cousin.
"Perhaps there was so unforeseen accident," soone suggested.
A mountain breeze blew, making it chill. Qiu Xiang draped a thin shawl over Madam Zhou’s shoulders.
Madam Zhou murmured, "Even this place got burned, it’s all gone."
She stood for a while before finally turning back.
Now dressed quite differently from before, Madam Zhou stood out in the village. People pointed at her, with so even curiously engaging her in conversation. Madam Zhou only replied that her husband had returned, and she was visiting her old family ho.
She wanted the people of Wozi Village to understand that she hadn’t just returned as a stray daughter. Her daughter had a respectable father, and she, Zhou iniang, had a husband who was now back.
Listening to their congratulatory words, though insincere, Madam Zhou felt tears welling up. The past grievances seed to lt away, and she finally stood with pride before the world.
Returning to the Old Zhou family ho, she asked how the house by the mountain had been burned. Old Lady Zhou glanced at her and sarcastically remarked, "Don’t you know? You should ask your daughter!"
Madam Zhou was taken aback and looked at Zhou Xueli and the others. The two looked a bit awkward and rely smiled, "No one lived up there anymore, so it burned, and that’s that."
Madam Zhou then understood, fearing it might have been Wufu who burned down the house after returning.
...
The next day.
After breakfast, Madam Zhou prepared to leave. Before departing, she sought Old Lady Zhou’s permission and went to the ancestral shrine of Old Scholar Zhou to offer incense and whispered many words before coming out of the shrine.
"This bit of silver is my filial offering to mother; please accept it." Madam Zhou handed a box to Zhou Xueli.
Zhou Xueli opened it to find neatly arranged large silver ingots, each weighing ten taels, totaling over one hundred taels of silver.
"Sister, we have enough; you don’t need to give us this." Zhou Xueli closed the box, eager to return it.
Madam Zhou avoided receiving it, saying, "Take it, it’s not for you; it’s a filial offering to mother. I don’t know when I’ll return." With that, she glanced toward Old Lady Zhou’s room.
Zhou Xueli and Lady Liang exchanged a glance, handing the box to Lady Liang, saying, "Sister, don’t bla mother. Her words are ant for your good!"
Madam Zhou’s lips tugged at a corner, but she said nothing.
"I’m leaving." Seeing that Old Lady Zhou had no intention of coming out, she turned away with a hint of disappointnt.
