Chapter 1: The Ghost in the Academy

One of the most prestigious high schools in the country, Xinli No. 1 High School, had produced countless outstanding graduates in the decades since its establishnt.

However, within this well-known academy, a sinister and terrifying legend had long been passed down.

It was said that more than fifty years ago, when the foundation of the school was being laid, construction workers unearthed thousands of human skeletons underground.

Afterwards, the police also ca to investigate, but in the end they could not determine where these bones ca from, let alone trace their identities.

This incident did not affect the progress of the construction, and not long after, the school was finally completed.

Yet on the very first day of the new school’s opening, a student scread and leapt from the rooftop, splattering into a bloody ss upon the ground.

Because of this, the newly-built school was forced to delay opening.

Only two years later did it finally begin to admit students again.

From then on, the school’s developnt proceeded with unbelievable smoothness.

The students admitted beca more and more outstanding, its exam results often ranked among the best in the country, and within just a few years it had risen to beco a nationally renowned high school.

All of this seed impossible to explain, as if the sacrifice of that very first student had exchanged for everything the school now possessed.

Yet the truly frightening events were still brewing.

On the day of the school’s twentieth anniversary celebration, the entire second class of the third grade suddenly disappeared without a trace.

It was as though they had evaporated from the human world—thirty-six students vanished mysteriously, leaving behind no clues at all!

Afterwards, in order to suppress the news, the school paid a hush money sum so astronomical it was hard to imagine.

Only with great difficulty did Xinli No. 1 High School manage to continue existing until this day…

“Wait, sothing about this story doesn’t sound right, does it?”

Lu Feng stifled a laugh and helplessly complained,

“One student jumps off a building and the school closes for two years, but when an entire class goes missing, they just pay money to smooth things over? No matter how you think about it, that doesn’t make sense, right? And isn’t the second class of the third grade… our class?”

“Aiya, that’s why I said it’s just a legend!”

The girl across from him puffed out her cheeks, looking sowhat displeased,

“Isn’t it because you’ve had your head buried in books every day? I was afraid you’d study yourself stupid, so I wanted to tell you a story to help you relax… hmph, good intentions never get rewarded!”

She turned her head away angrily, making a face that said “I don’t want to bother with you.”

“Alright, alright, I get it. Thank you.”

Lu Feng reached out and patted her head, just like smoothing the fur of a sulking kitten.

“Speaking of which, tomorrow is the fiftieth anniversary celebration of the school, and they actually aren’t giving us a holiday. That’s such a scam!”

“You… the college entrance exams are almost here, and you’re still thinking about holidays.”

Lu Feng sighed and shook his head.

Sotis, he couldn’t help but admire the childhood friend in front of him.

With less than a month left until the college entrance exams, she could still be so carefree.

Should he say that she was simply too outstanding?

He glanced up at the ranking chart posted on the wall.

His own na was right at the top—first place, the number one in the entire school.

And the person right behind him was Yu Mo, his childhood friend, the very sa girl who had just told him that story.

The two of them were often ntioned together, and many people jokingly referred to them as a “golden boy and jade girl.” But Lu Feng knew very well just how wide the gap between them truly was.

There really did exist such a thing as a “genius” in this world.

Every ti he looked at the rankings, Lu Feng couldn’t help but think this.

His own results could only be said to have been obtained entirely through hard work.

Whether at school or at ho, he spent nearly all his ti studying.

In contrast, Yu Mo spent her classes either reading manga, playing on her phone, or scribbling out so incomprehensible novels.

As for what she was like at ho, Lu Feng knew even more clearly, because their hos were only one building apart—just a few minutes’ walk to each other’s doorsteps.

According to what he knew, Yu Mo either binge-watched ani and dramas after school, or spent her ti gaming.

As for howork, nine tis out of ten she copied his.

She could be said to be the standard model of a “bad student.”

And yet, despite being so inattentive, Yu Mo had never once fallen out of the school’s top three in any exam.

Many tis, she had even co in second place, trailing behind Lu Feng by only the tiniest of margins.

Lu Feng had thought more than once—if she put in just a little effort, wouldn’t she surpass him easily?

Or perhaps… she could have already surpassed him long ago, but deliberately remained in second place?

Honestly, that idea exceeded his understanding.

It was as though she carried the traits of both a top student and a failing student at the sa ti.

In the end, Lu Feng could only arrive at one conclusion—genius.

When it ca to academics, his childhood friend Yu Mo was without a doubt a genius.

Faced with a genius, soone like Lu Feng, who relied solely on effort, truly had no choice but to admit defeat.

Thinking of this, Lu Feng couldn’t resist roughly ruffling Yu Mo’s hair,

“You… if you tried even a little harder, you would have surpassed long ago!”

“Eh? But why would I want to surpass Xiao Feng?”

She looked at him blankly, as if what he had just said wasn’t even in Chinese.

“As long as Xiao Feng is first place, I’m fine being right behind you—”

She smiled slyly,

“Besides, that way I can copy your howork in the future without feeling the least bit guilty!”

“…”

Lu Feng was speechless as he looked at Yu Mo, pressing his hand down on her head even harder.

At that mont, a voice suddenly rang in Lu Feng’s ear—

*I’m here. Can you co over for a mont?*

Startled, he looked up toward the classroom door.

When he saw the flickering figure, his expression imdiately changed.

Lu Feng quickly stood up and walked toward the hallway.

Behind him, Yu Mo’s puzzled voice followed,

“Class is about to start, Xiao Feng. Where are you going?”

“To the bathroom.”

He answered without turning his head, walking out of the bustling classroom.

Silently, Lu Feng followed the figure in front of him.

Students walked past her one by one in the corridor, but it was as if none of them saw her.

In fact, they really couldn’t see her—because the person before him, strictly speaking, wasn’t even a “person.”

Despite being a top student and an all-rounder in sports, Lu Feng had another trait no one knew about—he possessed a pair of Yin-Yang eyes.

He first discovered this ability when he was five years old, during his grandmother’s funeral.

At the funeral, he saw soone who looked exactly like his grandmother sitting beside him, gently stroking his head.

Without thinking, the naive little Lu Feng asked his mother,

“Mom, who’s the person lying inside the coffin?”

“Silly child, that’s your grandmother…”

“But… isn’t Grandma right here beside ?”

As he spoke, little Lu Feng pointed to the empty air next to him.

The mont these words ca out, the entire place fell into silence.

Even the musicians playing the mourning song faltered mid-note.

To this day, Lu Feng could still rember how ugly his mother’s face looked at that mont.

Of course, when they returned ho, his parents scolded him harshly out of fear and worry.

They even invited a dium to perform an exorcism, leaving Lu Feng with a deep psychological shadow.

After that, although he saw ghosts many tis, he never again ntioned to anyone that he had Yin-Yang eyes.

In fact, after encountering them so often, he had gradually grown used to it—

After all, they had no ability to harm people, and seed only able to scare.

Whether the legend Yu Mo had just told him about their school was true or not, Lu Feng did not know.

But one thing he did know—this school was truly haunted!

From his very first day at Xinli No. 1 High School, Lu Feng had seen this female ghost.

But at the ti, she hadn’t attached herself to him, and he pretended not to notice her.

However, recently, for so reason, this female ghost suddenly noticed him and began appearing frequently before his eyes.

Sotis she floated outside the classroom window, sotis she stood in the doorway, staring at him intently.

Until one day, when Lu Feng could no longer endure it.

Taking advantage of an empty classroom, he walked straight up to the female ghost and asked,

“Why do you keep haunting ?”

The female ghost looked stunned, as though she had never expected Lu Feng to directly confront her.

After hesitating for a mont, she suddenly stepped back and darted away.

From then on, she appeared even more often.

But whenever Lu Feng tried to question her, she would imdiately flee again.

This cast a heavy shadow over his school life—

Imagine it: a female ghost of unknown intent staring at you every day from so corner of the school.

Who could stand living like that?

Although… this ghost was actually quite pretty.

One evening during self-study in his third year, she suddenly appeared behind Lu Feng while he was engrossed in solving problems, startling him into leaping out of his seat—

“This question… you did it wrong…”

The ghost said softly.

Her clear and lodious voice was nothing like the eerie horror he had imagined.

From that day onward, he finally began interacting with the ghost who refused to leave.

After many exchanges, Lu Feng eventually learned the na she had in life—Liuli.

Other than that, she rembered nothing.

As for why she was haunting Lu Feng, Liuli herself couldn’t explain, only telling him,

“Because… I feel like there’s a very familiar scent on you…”

Scent?

Lu Feng sniffed himself, but aside from a faint sll of laundry detergent, he noticed nothing.

“Maybe it’s not a scent… just a feeling… you feel very familiar to .”

Liuli said hesitantly.

Looking at the beautiful ghost before him, Lu Feng couldn’t help but feel curious.

Who had she been, really?

He even went out of his way to look through the rosters of past students, but the numbers were overwhelming.

Trying to find one person among tens of thousands was no different than searching for a needle in a haystack.

Helpless, he had no choice but to give up.

In the days that followed, Lu Feng occasionally chatted with Liuli, though most of the ti he did the talking while she just listened.

Through her, however, he also learned so bizarre bits of gossip—

Things like the principal and the dean having an affair, a horoom teacher in Class One liking dirty manga, the class beauty in the neighboring class secretly harboring a crush on him… all kinds of useless rumors.

At the sa ti, Lu Feng also learned one important fact about Liuli—

Liuli had died here, and so she could never leave this school.
