Chapter 662: Chapter 617: Happiness, So Sweet!
Cherish Turner looked puzzled but complied, sitting across from him and starting a ga of chess.
By the ti William Griffith returned from answering his call, the two had already begun their match. He sat down next to Cherish, looking at the chessboard with a hint of surprise in his eyes. He glanced at Cherish, who remained calm and quiet while playing, then looked at Robert Griffith, who carefully studied the chessboard, plotting his next strategic move.
“Aha! So that’s what you were planning!” Her “knight” had advanced, attacking with the “cannon,” and Robert finally understood her strategy from the previous moves. In excitent, he slamd the table, startling Cherish, “Let’s play another ga!”
“Grandpa, I’ll play with you,” William chid in.
“I won’t play with you! I want to play with her!” Robert began to set up the ga once more, determined to win against a girl.
William leaned in close to Cherish’s ear and whispered, “How co I never knew you could play chess?”
“You never asked ,” she replied.
“Couldn’t you have told
on your own?” William wished he could knock so sense into her head.
As they whispered to each other, Robert chastised them, “Stop whispering!”
“Oh!” Both replied in unison, sharing a smile.
Robert pondered carefully, ensuring every move was cautious.
Not just to win the ga, but to save face as well.
Cherish remained utterly silent, her clear eyes fixated on the chessboard as if calculating each move. Her focused expression was srizing. With her short, pretty hair framing her face, she exuded a unique allure that captured William’s attention.
He suddenly rembered the past.
It was at a quarterly eting on a Monday.
During her first ti attending such a eting and speaking on her own, she displayed the sa calm and composed deanor. Her fair side profile, lips devoid of lipstick—a refreshing sight. She could effortlessly attract everyone’s attention, including his.
In that fleeting mont, a question arose in William’s mind.
When did he first capture her attention?
“Ah? Checkmate?” Robert furrowed his brows, eyes widening.
William was brought back to reality, glancing at the chessboard only to see her piece cornering Robert’s king, leaving him no room to escape. He then looked at the older man, who appeared dumbstruck. Robert murmured different moves he had made during the ga, sotis chuckling and sotis pursing his lips. His solemn face softened, and his expression beca lively.
“How old were you when you started playing chess?” Robert asked casually.
“Eight,” Cherish replied.
“At eight?” Robert couldn’t hide his surprise.
Cherish “mm-hmm”ed and nodded, explaining, “My dad liked to play chess, so I learned to play with him.”
“How about your dad?” Robert asked while setting up the chess pieces.
As Cherish placed the pieces, she softly said, “Due to so matters, he and my mom went to live in the countryside—they don’t live with
anymore.”
Upon hearing her words, Robert fell silent, recalling Cherish’s background—she was, after all, Anthony Turner’s daughter. How could he not know her story? Nonetheless, he refrained from comnting and rely called for another ga.
“I really enjoy playing chess,” Cherish admitted, smiling despite ntioning her father.
“Not many girls nowadays play chess. Even Hailey just knows the basics,” Robert remarked quietly, “Every ti she plays with , I defeat her completely.”
“Really?”
“She’s good at everything else, just not chess.”
Robert and Cherish continued to chat casually, perhaps not even realizing how their conversation eased the tension in the room. William didn’t say a word, but the corners of his lips curved upward. He spent that afternoon patiently watching them and pouring tea.
“Knock, knock, knock—” A servant entered, announcing, “Master, the doctor has arrived.”
The ga had been left unfinished as the doctor arrived.
Reluctantly, Robert stood up, not forgetting to remind Cherish, “Stay for dinner. We’ll continue our ga after.”
Watching Robert leave, William wrapped his arms around Cherish the mont the door closed, grumbling, “I’m so bored.”
“Wasn’t it your idea to co here in the first place?” Cherish retorted, turning her head to look at him.
